For broad everyday shopping, compare Walmart and Target; for electronics, consider Best Buy; and for a specific brand or product category, check the retailer that specializes in it. Before buying, compare the delivered total, who sells the listing, delivery or pickup options, and return terms.
Which Amazon alternative fits what you need?
Think of these retailers as options for different shopping needs, not as a universal ranking. Optimove Insights’ 2025 Consumer Holiday Retail Shopping Survey reported shopping-destination selections of 89% for Amazon, 61% for Walmart, and 60% for Target. - Walmart: A broad retail destination to compare for general merchandise. Its online assortment includes Marketplace listings as well as retailer offerings, so check the seller and listing terms.
- Target: Another broad-shopping option. Compare the exact item and its delivered cost and terms; the available evidence does not establish that Target is cheaper or better for every purchase.
- Best Buy: A category-focused option for electronics and related products. Best Buy’s price-match policy names Amazon, Costco, Target, and Walmart as qualified competitors, subject to exclusions. Its policy says items shipped from and sold by third-party Marketplace Sellers on those sites are not covered. The page gives an effective date of May 11, 2025, so check the current policy and the specific listing before relying on a match. See Best Buy’s price-match policy.
- Specialist or brand-direct shops: If you already know the product type or brand, compare its own store and established category retailers. There is no evidence here for a complete list of specialists or a claim that they consistently beat Amazon on price, shipping, or service.
How to compare the actual purchase
A store’s reputation does not tell you what a particular listing will cost or how a return will work. Compare the item and terms you would actually buy:
- Check who sells the item. Identify whether the listing is sold by the retailer itself or a third-party marketplace seller. Do not assume the retailer handles every part of a marketplace transaction.
- Compare the delivered total. Include shipping and any other fees shown before checkout, rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- Check delivery and pickup for your location. Timing and pickup availability can depend on the item and address; confirm the options presented for your order.
- Read the return and refund terms. Check the applicable policy for that listing, including any seller-specific rules, before paying.
- Weigh membership costs against your use. Count only benefits you expect to use, and verify current fees and terms directly with the retailer. No current membership-price comparison is established here.
What marketplace listings change
A marketplace can expand a retailer’s online selection, but it also means the seller may be responsible for important parts of the transaction. Best Buy announced its digital marketplace on August 19, 2025, describing marketplace items as available online and in its app. Read Best Buy’s marketplace announcement.

Walmart’s terms say a Marketplace Retailer is responsible for processing, delivery, international shipping where applicable, returns, and customer service, except where Walmart performs certain services on the retailer’s behalf. Walmart says seller shipping details, return policy, customer-service information, and marketplace privacy policy are available on the retailer’s Seller Information page. The Federal Trade Commission notes that marketplace experiences can differ in how listings are displayed, payments are processed, and other parts of a transaction are managed. It advises shoppers to review seller terms, shipping fees, and return policies, and to use safer payment methods such as credit cards or secure payment systems. See the FTC’s marketplace guidance.

Practical checks before you place an order
The FTC’s advice for online purchases is simple: “Before you buy something online, shop around and check out sellers and products.” Its Online Shopping guidance also recommends paying attention to delivery, returns, and refunds. For a marketplace order, verify the seller’s information and terms as well as the retailer’s general policies. Policies can change, so use the current listing and checkout details rather than relying on an old policy summary.
