Emby is the closest like-for-like alternative to Jellyfin and Plex if you want a personal media server with apps for your devices. Choose Universal Media Server (UMS) if your priority is DLNA or UPnP playback on network devices; choose Kodi if you want a media-center player on a TV or computer rather than a central server serving multiple clients. Jellyfin itself remains a strong option if you want a self-hosted server without premium feature tiers.

The best fit depends on your playback devices, whether your files play directly or need transcoding, and which features you are willing to pay for. The comparison below is based on official project documentation reviewed on October 7, 2026—not standardized hands-on testing.

Which alternative fits your setup?

Software Model Best fit Cost and feature notes
Jellyfin Self-hosted server with client apps You want to host your own media and avoid premium feature licenses. The project says it has no premium licenses or features.
Emby Personal media server You want a close server-based alternative and are willing to check which features require Premiere. Premiere unlocks features including mobile downloads and hardware-accelerated transcoding; consult the current feature list before paying.
Universal Media Server DLNA, UPnP, and HTTP/S media server You mainly want to deliver media to compatible TVs, consoles, receivers, computers, or phones. The project describes the software as free. Its emphasis is device serving and playback compatibility, not a feature-for-feature match with Jellyfin or Plex.
Kodi Media-center player and entertainment hub You want a customizable interface on the device connected to your TV and can use local or network storage. Kodi is a player, not a direct replacement for a central server with apps serving multiple devices.

These products solve overlapping but different problems. If you need one server to organize a library and provide it to several devices, start with Emby or Jellyfin. If your devices can discover a DLNA/UPnP server and you want straightforward network playback, evaluate UMS. If you want the playback device itself to be the media center, consider Kodi.

Emby: the closest server-based alternative

Emby is designed to organize and stream a personal collection of videos, music, photos, and live TV from a server hosted on a computer or NAS. It is the most direct alternative here if you want a central library and client apps rather than a player focused on one playback device. Emby’s product page describes the server model; its Premiere page lists features available with the paid license.

Check the feature gates before choosing

Emby lists mobile downloads and hardware-accelerated transcoding among Premiere features, along with DVR and some full app access. Which features matter depends on how you use the server and which app you install. Compare your must-haves with Emby’s current feature matrix and the app listing for your exact TV or mobile device before purchasing. License options and prices can change, so check the live Premiere page rather than relying on an older price quote.

The official feature pages establish that some capabilities are paid; they do not establish that Emby is easier, more polished, or more reliable than Jellyfin or Plex.

Universal Media Server: prioritize DLNA and UPnP playback

UMS is a free media server for Windows, Linux, and macOS that emphasizes DLNA, UPnP, and HTTP/S streaming. It can serve compatible TVs, consoles, audio receivers, computers, phones, and browsers. When a receiving device supports a file, it can play it directly; when it does not, UMS describes transforming or transcoding media to suit the device and network preferences. See the project’s features and downloads for current details.

Choose UMS when the main question is, “Can I get my files playing on this network device?” Do not assume it offers the same client-app ecosystem or user-management capabilities as Jellyfin or Plex; its documented emphasis is device serving and compatibility. Confirm that your target device can access the server using a method it supports.

Kodi: a player and media center, not a central-server substitute

Kodi is a free, open-source media player and entertainment hub designed for a television and remote-control interface. It can browse media stored locally or on network storage, build a library, and use community add-ons. For live TV and recording, Kodi can connect to separate PVR backends such as MythTV, NextPVR, or Tvheadend. Its official overview describes it as a player and hub, not a service that provides a central server and a set of client apps.

Pick Kodi if you want to configure the playback device as your media center. Using it on several devices may mean setting up and maintaining each client separately; that is a different approach from managing a central Jellyfin or Emby server and connecting multiple apps to it.

Jellyfin: the open, self-hosted reference point

Jellyfin is itself a self-hosted alternative to Plex and Emby, not just a product to replace. Its project describes it as free software that streams media from a dedicated server to user devices through apps, with no premium licenses or features. Installation documentation covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Podman, Synology, and TrueNAS SCALE. See the project overview and current download and client listings.

Verify your actual playback device

The current official client list includes Android and Android TV/Fire TV, iOS and iPadOS, Roku, webOS, Tizen, Xbox, and desktop clients. Availability can depend on the platform and app store, so check the listing for the TV, phone, or computer you own before building around it. Jellyfin’s Roku listing notes that a store limitation can cause the app to show a cable or satellite subscription notice; the project says no subscription is required for the Jellyfin server or official clients.

How to choose: check these five things first

  1. Decide whether you need a server or a player. For a central library serving several devices, compare Emby and Jellyfin. For DLNA/UPnP device playback, evaluate UMS. For a media center on the playback device, consider Kodi.
  2. Check the exact client on each screen. Confirm that your television platform, streaming device, phone, and desktop have a suitable app or playback method in the project’s current official listings. Do this before investing time in organizing a library.
  3. List the paid features you actually need. Jellyfin says it has no premium feature tier. Emby puts some features behind Premiere. Check the current feature pages and the specific device app rather than assuming all capabilities are included everywhere.
  4. Determine whether your files will direct-play or need transcoding. Direct play sends a compatible file without conversion. Transcoding converts it for a client that cannot play the original format or for a network constraint. If conversion is required, the server’s CPU or supported hardware acceleration becomes relevant.
  5. Choose a host and storage plan that match your use. An existing computer or NAS may be enough. A dedicated always-on machine is optional, not a universal requirement. If you expand storage, plan a separate backup; a media drive alone is not a backup.

Transcoding and server hardware: plan for the workload

Do not choose a server based on a generic claim that one platform needs more power than another. First check which media formats your client supports and whether it can direct-play the files in your library. A server that mostly direct-plays media has a different workload from one that must convert video for several clients.

Jellyfin documents acceleration options including Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, macOS VideoToolbox, and Rockchip RKMPP. Support depends on the hardware, operating system, drivers, and the stage of the media pipeline; some processing may still run without acceleration. Consult Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration documentation for the supported setup and limitations. Emby also lists hardware-accelerated transcoding as a Premiere feature.

A mini PC or other small computer can make sense if you need a dedicated, always-on host, but no particular model is established as the right choice without knowing your files, clients, and operating system. A NAS or external drive can hold a library, but the appropriate capacity depends on your collection. Select hardware only after accounting for expected direct play, transcoding, storage, and backups.

Control, accounts, and what the comparison does not establish

Jellyfin and Kodi explicitly identify themselves as free or open-source software projects. Emby provides a personal server product with some paid features. These distinctions matter if you want to avoid paid feature tiers or prefer software whose project describes it as free and open source.

Do not treat these labels as a complete privacy or account-requirement comparison. Plex’s terms, revised October 30, 2025, describe a personal limited license and reserve discretion over online or remote-access processes; they are not enough by themselves to establish a comprehensive, current comparison of account requirements, standard prices, or remote-streaming rules. Review the current Plex terms for the applicable details rather than inferring a broader privacy claim.
