“Go code minification” can mean three different things: making source files more compact, removing local file paths from a compiled binary, or obfuscating and shrinking that binary. gocondense is for the first job: it reformats eligible Go constructs onto fewer lines. Use go build -trimpath for filesystem-path metadata, or consider Garble when you specifically need obfuscation and accept its debugging trade-offs.
Choose by what you want to make smaller
| Your goal | Best-fit option | What it does | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condense Go source while keeping a line-length limit | gocondense | Reformats eligible multiline source constructs into compact lines. | Compact formatting is a style choice; assess readability against your team’s conventions. |
| Keep source formatted consistently with project conventions | gofmt or a stricter formatter such as gofumpt | Source-formatting tools are the relevant category when consistency—not denser layout—is the goal. | Detailed behavior comparisons are not established here; consult each tool’s official documentation. |
| Remove local filesystem paths from build output | go build -trimpath |
Go’s build flag removes filesystem paths from the resulting executable. | It does not condense source, and filenames can still begin with module or import paths. |
| Obfuscate binary metadata, with an optional size reduction | Garble | A Go toolchain wrapper that transforms identifiers, package paths, filenames, and build/debug information. | It is not a source formatter; builds take extra time, and its tiny mode sacrifices useful diagnostic output. |
When gocondense is the right alternative
Despite the word “minification,” gocondense formats Go source; it does not claim to reduce compiled executable size. It is a direct fit if you want eligible code to occupy fewer lines while respecting a configurable maximum line length. The project describes its transformations as idempotent and comment-preserving.
What it can condense
The README examples include function signatures and calls, eligible collection literals and expressions, single-item declaration groups, and adjacent parameters with the same type. Constructs remain multiline when they exceed the configured limit or do not meet the tool’s conditions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The CLI can process named files or directories, recurse through ./..., and read from standard input. The project also documents a library API. Its default maximum line length is 80 columns, and its default tab-width calculation is four spaces. Unless explicitly named, generated files, vendor, testdata, and paths covered by go.mod ignore directives are skipped.
Adopt it without surprising the team
- Run gocondense on a representative package or selected files first.
- Review the diff for readability and confirm the resulting line lengths suit your conventions.
- Agree on whether the team wants this compact layout before adding it to an automated formatting workflow.
When standard formatting matters more than compactness
If the real problem is inconsistent formatting, use the formatter already expected by the project rather than treating compactness as the goal. gofmt and stricter formatters such as gofumpt belong to this adjacent source-formatting category. Their detailed behavior is not compared here, so check their official documentation before choosing or changing a project-wide convention.

When you want fewer local paths in a Go binary
Use Go’s -trimpath build flag when the concern is filesystem paths recorded in build output. For example, apply it to a build command as go build -trimpath. It has no effect on source layout. It removes filesystem paths, but recorded filenames may still start with module or import paths, so it should not be understood as removing every path-like identifier.
When obfuscation or binary size is the goal
Garble wraps the Go toolchain and can transform identifiers, package paths, filenames, and build/debug information. The project describes its purpose as producing a binary that works like a regular build while revealing as little original-source information as possible; that is the project’s characterization, not an independent security guarantee. Garble is a different category from a source formatter.

Understand the cost of tiny mode
Garble’s documentation estimates that -tiny can make binaries about 15% smaller. This is the project’s estimate, not an independently verified benchmark. Tiny mode removes runtime code that prints panics, fatal errors, and trace/debug information, which makes crashes harder to diagnose.
The repository documentation reviewed for this article says Garble requires Go 1.27 or later. Requirements can change; check the project repository for the current version requirement before installing it.

Make the trade-off explicit
- Source readability: gocondense gives you a compact layout, but whether dense lines are easier to work with depends on your team.
- Path metadata: use
-trimpathfor filesystem paths in build output; it is not source formatting or full path removal. - Obfuscation: Garble transforms binary information, but it does not promise security against every form of inspection.
- Build and debugging experience: Garble adds build time, and tiny mode removes diagnostic output that can help explain crashes.
