A basic or limited-function phone is a better fit if they prefer a pocketable handset; an Apple Watch configured by a parent is another option for families who already use an iPhone. Compare access controls, school settings, emergency behavior, cellular coverage, and ongoing service costs before choosing.
Compare the main options
| Option | Best suited to | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated kids smartwatch | Calls, texts, and wearable location features with parent-managed contacts | Service plan, coverage, contact controls, emergency-call behavior, battery life, and school mode |
| Apple Watch set up for a child | Families with a parent iPhone who want Apple communication and location features | GPS + Cellular model, supported carrier plan, parent setup, app and service access, and school restrictions |
| Basic or limited-function phone | A tween who prefers a pocketable handset but does not need a full smartphone | Browser and app-store restrictions, contact and location features, carrier plan, and current software support |
| Wi-Fi-only device or setup | A child who is usually near trusted Wi-Fi and does not need independent cellular communication | Wi-Fi availability, which apps work, permitted contacts, and location and emergency limitations |
These are different access and connectivity choices, not interchangeable versions of the same device. A cellular watch or phone can communicate away from Wi-Fi only when it has the necessary plan and coverage. A Wi-Fi-only setup depends on a network being available.
Dedicated kids smartwatch: the closest phone alternative
A cellular kids watch can give a tween their own way to call and text without requiring them to carry a smartphone. For example, Gabb says its Watch 3e is a standalone device with its own phone number, unlimited talk and text, voice messaging, GPS, Safe Zones, and a parent-managed contact list. Its product page describes support for up to 100 contacts. See Gabb’s Watch details and Gabb’s product and support information for current terms.
What to check on a kids watch
- Contacts: Confirm whether a parent approves contacts and how those controls work. Gabb describes parent-managed contacts; do not assume every kids watch works the same way.
- Internet and apps: Gabb says its devices are designed without web browsers, social media, or open app stores. That is a manufacturer description of its products, not a guarantee that every risk or exposure is eliminated.
- School settings: Check what the school mode or schedule blocks and whether calling or other functions remain available. Do not assume a school setting is identical across brands.
- Location: GPS and Safe Zones can help caregivers check a child’s location, but Gabb says updates may vary with signal, battery, and connectivity and does not guarantee uninterrupted service or coverage.
- Emergency behavior: Gabb says the Watch 3e SOS button calls a designated parent contact, not 911 or other emergency services. Teach the child what to do in an emergency and verify how any device’s emergency feature works.
Plans, coverage, and accessories
Gabb requires a service plan for the Watch 3e. Cellular service depends on the plan and available coverage, so check the provider’s current terms for your location rather than assuming the watch will connect everywhere. The reviewed product information does not establish a stable, comparable total cost; ask about activation, recurring service, and replacement costs before committing.

Apple Watch configured by a parent
Apple lets a parent use an iPhone to set up a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch for a child who does not own an iPhone. The parent’s iPhone is required for setup and management, and Apple says a carrier cellular plan is needed for the child’s watch to connect away from the parent’s phone. Carrier eligibility and availability vary by location; check with the family’s carrier. Apple describes approved contacts, location notifications, and Schooltime on its Apple Watch For Your Kids page.
This option has a broader access profile than a purpose-limited kids watch: Apple services and apps are available, so caregivers should decide whether its controls fit their family’s boundaries. Confirm the supported carrier plan, configure contacts and Schooltime, and review which apps and services the child can use.

Basic or limited-function phone
A pocketable phone may work better than a watch for a tween who dislikes typing on a small screen or wants a familiar handset. “Basic” and “limited-function” are broad categories, however, not a guarantee of specific restrictions. Gabb describes its Phone 4 as a basic phone without a web browser or app store; check the manufacturer’s current product information for its features and service terms.

A phone without a SIM can support Wi-Fi communication where a trusted network is available, but it does not provide independent cellular communication when the child is away from Wi-Fi. Consider this arrangement only after checking which communication apps the child can use, who they can contact, where Wi-Fi will be available, and what happens if they need help while offline.
Choose by the child’s routine and your boundaries
- Choose a dedicated watch if wearable calls, texts, and location features are the priority and a parent-managed contact list and more limited access suit your family.
- Consider a limited-function phone if the child needs a handset they can keep in a pocket and you have verified the model’s actual restrictions.
- Consider an Apple Watch if a parent already has an iPhone and is comfortable managing a device with access to Apple services and apps.
- Use Wi-Fi-only communication only if its dependence on Wi-Fi matches where the child spends time and the family has a plan for offline situations.
Before buying, confirm the device’s current plan and carrier requirements, coverage where the child will use it, contact and school controls, location behavior, and emergency procedure. Product features and plans can change; rely on current manufacturer and carrier terms for the specific model and region.
