The best alternative depends on what you mean by “alternative.” If you want to leave NVIDIA and can use macOS, consider the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max. If you need Windows, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 is a current workstation option, but its discrete graphics are NVIDIA. The ASUS ProArt P16 is a creator-focused Windows laptop, and it also uses NVIDIA graphics. Choose by platform and application requirements first, then compare the exact configurations.

First decide what you want to change

“Alternative” can mean a laptop from a different manufacturer, a different operating system, or a different GPU ecosystem. Those are not the same choice: the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 and ASUS ProArt P16 offer Windows alternatives to other laptop designs, but their cited discrete-GPU configurations remain NVIDIA-based.

  • To leave NVIDIA: the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max is the clearest candidate in the available product specifications. It runs macOS, so confirm that your applications, plugins, peripherals and deployment workflow support it.
  • To stay on Windows: the ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 is a mobile workstation option, while the ProArt P16 is positioned for creator use. Neither is an NVIDIA-free choice in the cited configurations.

What the current candidates offer

Model Platform and listed configuration details What to know
Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch Apple’s current technical specifications list a 16.2-inch display and M5 Max configurations. Apple specifications A non-NVIDIA platform option if your software works on macOS and does not require CUDA.
Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 (16-inch Intel) Lenovo lists Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors, RTX PRO 1000 or 2000 Blackwell laptop GPUs, up to 64GB memory, and Fedora or Ubuntu OS options. Its specification material identifies CAMM2 memory as customer replaceable; verify the specific part number. Lenovo specifications A Windows workstation choice, not a way to avoid NVIDIA when configured with discrete graphics.
ASUS ProArt P16 H7606 ASUS lists a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, configurations ranging from RTX 4060 to RTX 5090 Laptop GPUs, and a 16-inch display specified at 100% DCI-P3 coverage. ASUS specifications A creator-oriented Windows option, but the cited graphics configurations are NVIDIA-based.

How to choose for your work

Check platform and application dependencies

Start with the applications you must run—not the processor name. Check operating-system support for your software, plugins, drivers and peripherals, as well as the operating systems used for deployment or collaboration. For local machine-learning development, establish whether your tools specifically require CUDA before considering a Mac. A workflow that depends on CUDA is a poor fit for an NVIDIA-free choice.

Match the graphics choice to the workload

GPU rendering, local inference, CUDA development, gaming and professional CAD or visualization have different requirements. Identify the software and the GPU memory your projects need, then verify those requirements with the application vendor. The listed product specifications do not establish certification for any particular professional application, so do not assume that a workstation label alone guarantees it.

Compare the actual memory configuration

Check how much memory the exact configuration includes and whether it can be replaced or expanded. Lenovo lists up to 64GB for the ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 and identifies CAMM2 as customer replaceable in its specification material; confirm the details for the part number you intend to buy. Do not assume that every configuration has the same memory type or upgrade path.

Evaluate the display against your deliverables

For color-sensitive work, compare coverage, calibration needs, brightness, resolution, refresh rate and touch support—not just screen size. ASUS specifies 100% DCI-P3 coverage for the cited ProArt P16 display. The provided specifications do not establish that the MacBook or ThinkPad display is a better match for your particular workflow, so compare the exact model and your color-management requirements.

Assess portability and sustained work

Compare the weight of the exact configuration, its power adapter and independent testing under workloads like yours. A CPU or GPU model name alone cannot tell you how long a laptop will run on battery or how quickly it will perform during sustained work. The available evidence does not provide a current, controlled comparison of battery life or sustained performance across these three candidates.

What performance comparisons can—and cannot—tell you

RTINGS’ comparison, updated April 1, 2026, covers the MacBook Pro 16 (M4, 2024) and ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 (2024). It frames them as mobile workstations with broad configuration options and workload-dependent CPU/GPU trade-offs. It is useful context for thinking about platform and workload fit, but it is not a same-generation benchmark of the current M5 Max MacBook Pro and ThinkPad P1 Gen 8. Read the RTINGS comparison.

There is no established controlled, same-workload result here across the current Apple, Lenovo and ASUS configurations. A universal claim that one is faster or better would therefore be unsupported. Your applications, platform constraints, GPU memory needs, display priorities and chosen configuration should determine the shortlist.
