A Windows PC can show apps from a linked Android phone through Phone Link, while Google Play Games on PC runs selected games—not arbitrary Android apps. Whichever route you consider, check that your essential apps work on the exact device before buying.

Android tablet: the best fit for native apps
An Android tablet is the most direct choice when your priority is running Android apps without relying on a phone or a game-specific PC service. The apps run on the tablet itself, and a keyboard case can make typing and basic productivity easier.
That setup is still an Android device, not a laptop running a desktop operating system. A keyboard does not guarantee compatibility with desktop software, and an app designed for a phone may not make good use of a tablet’s larger screen. Before choosing a model, confirm that your essential apps are available for it and work in the way you need.
Windows PC with Phone Link: use apps from a phone you own
Microsoft Phone Link can let you open supported apps from a connected Android device on a Windows PC. It does not install those apps on Windows: Microsoft says they continue running on the phone, with the phone’s display mirrored to the PC. - Consider it if: you already own a compatible Android phone and want to interact with its apps on a larger screen.
- Do not choose it as a substitute for native Windows apps: the phone must be connected, and the apps remain phone apps.
- Check interaction before relying on it: Microsoft notes that some apps may not work properly with a mouse or keyboard, and supported features depend on the phone and software.
Google Play Games on PC: for supported games only
Google Play Games on PC offers a Windows experience for selected mobile games. It is not a general way to install Android apps on a PC. Check whether a particular game is supported in your location and whether your PC meets Google’s eligibility and minimum system requirements in the Google Play Games on PC documentation. That documentation was last updated April 10, 2025; availability and requirements may change.
Why not just choose another Chromebook?
A Chromebook does not guarantee access to Android apps either. Google says the Play Store is available only on some Chromebook models, some apps are incompatible with some models, and work or school administrators may block Play Store access. Check Google’s instructions for installing and using Android apps on a Chromebook and confirm support for the exact model and apps you need.

Device support is not the same as app support. The Chromium project says that, unless otherwise specified, devices launched in or after 2019 support Android apps; its guidance also describes support as device-specific. Even on a supported Chromebook, an individual app may be unavailable or incompatible. See the Chrome OS device compatibility information.

How to choose before you buy
- List the apps you cannot do without. Check availability and essential features on the exact tablet or Chromebook model, or confirm that a game is listed for Google Play Games on PC.
- Decide where the apps must run. For apps running directly on the device, choose an Android tablet. For apps already on a compatible phone, consider Phone Link. For supported games on Windows, check Google Play Games on PC.
- Match the input to the app. Consider whether you need touch, keyboard and mouse, or a larger display, and verify that the app works with that setup.
- Check restrictions and requirements. Confirm phone, PC, account, regional and software eligibility as applicable. If the device is managed by work or school, ask whether app access is restricted.
