For browsing, documents, video calls and streaming, a Chromebook can cost less; if you need Windows desktop software, choose a Windows laptop with enough memory for your workload. A MacBook is an option when your apps support macOS and its price fits your budget. Choose a detachable Chromebook tablet mainly for portability and media, not long typing sessions.
Start with the software you need
Before comparing devices, list the programs and services you rely on for work, school or personal tasks. ChromeOS works with web apps and Android apps, but most Windows programs cannot be installed on it, according to RTINGS’ ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) guide. If an essential application is Windows-only, a Chromebook or MacBook may not be a practical substitute.
For web-based work such as browsing, documents and video calls, a Chromebook may be enough. If your required apps are available on macOS, a MacBook is another platform choice. Confirm compatibility for the exact application and features you use—not just whether an app with the same name exists on another platform.
Which alternative fits your everyday use?
| Option | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) | Lower-cost browsing and document work | ChromeOS cannot run most Windows programs; configuration, display, touchpad and battery limitations matter. |
| HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025) | Everyday work when you need Windows | The cited 8GB configuration has soldered memory; a 16GB model may cost more. |
| Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 2026) | Writing, browsing, spreadsheets and presentations with macOS-compatible apps | Costs more than entry-level options and is not suitable for software that requires Windows. |
| Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) | Media viewing, portability and occasional typing | Its detachable, cramped keyboard is less comfortable for extended writing. |
| Dell XPS 13 (2026) | Windows users seeking a premium ultraportable | Higher price; battery figures depend on the tested configuration and method. |
Choose a Chromebook for web-based basics
The ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) is a lower-cost candidate for browsing and documents. RTINGS describes multiple configurations: the 4GB version is aimed at lighter use, while 8GB is preferable if you expect to keep more tabs open or use Android apps. Check the listing carefully, since the name alone does not identify its memory or processor configuration.

#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- 4GB DDR4 System Memory; 128GB Solid State Drive
- 11.6" HD (1366 x 768) Multi-Touch Display
- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
- Windows 11 Pro
There are compromises to weigh. RTINGS notes a washed-out display, occasional touchpad issues and battery life that may not last a full workday. Those review findings are reasons to compare the specific configuration and your expected use, rather than assuming every CX15 listing will feel the same.
Keep Windows when your programs require it
If you rely on Windows desktop software, the HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025) is a Windows option to consider when its price and configuration suit your budget. RTINGS describes it as an under-$500 option when discounted; that is not a guaranteed current price. Its cited 8GB model has soldered memory, so it cannot be upgraded later. For regular work across several apps, RTINGS suggests seeking a 16GB configuration, which may require spending more.
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
The Dell XPS 13 (2026) is another Windows choice, positioned as a more premium ultraportable rather than a low-cost replacement. RTINGS advises considering it when Windows is required in its MacBook Neo discussion. Its higher price makes it a different budget trade-off from entry-level laptops.
Consider a MacBook only if macOS works for you
RTINGS says the Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 2026) handles writing, browsing, spreadsheets and presentations. It can be a suitable everyday productivity laptop when your applications support macOS, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for software that requires Windows. Its higher cost than entry-level options also means the platform benefit needs to justify the spend for your needs. See RTINGS’ MacBook Neo review.

Pick a detachable Chromebook for portability, not a typing-heavy day
The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) combines a tablet and detachable keyboard. That layout can suit media viewing and carrying a lightweight device, with typing available when needed. RTINGS characterizes it as media-oriented and notes that its keyboard is cramped for long writing sessions. If most of your day involves composing documents or working at a desk, a conventional laptop is likely the more comfortable form factor. See RTINGS’ Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 review.

Published battery figures can help set expectations, but they are not a controlled ranking when the devices and workloads differ. RTINGS reports around 11 hours of light use for the Ryzen 5 40 configuration of the HP OmniBook 3 14. Tom’s Guide measured 14 hours 29 minutes of continuous web use on its tested Dell XPS 13 (2026); this is one publication’s result, not a manufacturer guarantee. Tom’s Guide also lists 8 hours 32 minutes for its tested Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10. These results reflect different tests and configurations, so they should not be read as direct head-to-head comparisons. See Tom’s Guide laptop reviews.

Check the exact configuration before buying
- Confirm app compatibility: Make sure your essential software works on ChromeOS or macOS before choosing a non-Windows device.
- Check memory: Match RAM to your typical number of open apps and tabs. In particular, note that the cited 8GB HP OmniBook configuration has soldered memory.
- Inspect the listing: Processor, memory, storage, display and keyboard configuration can vary within a product family.
- Think about how you type: A detachable tablet can be convenient for viewing and travel, but keyboard comfort matters if you write for hours.
- Evaluate battery claims in context: Look for the test workload and device configuration, not just an hours figure.
- Verify current price and availability: Discounts, inventory and configurations change; a past under-$500 description is not a live price quote.
