For a fast, full-song vocal demo or songwriting idea, Suno is a sensible first tool to evaluate. Songwriters who need section-by-section editing, MIDI or DAW handoff, or instrumental-only material should compare other tools by workflow instead of treating every AI music generator as interchangeable. No product is established here as an objective sound-quality winner; choose based on the job, available exports, plan limits and the rights that apply to the account and track.
Which AI music generator is best for your songwriting job?
Start with the output you need. A prompt-to-song service, an editing-oriented tool, a MIDI-led composition tool and an instrumental sound-effects generator solve different problems. The descriptions below reflect published product information and a recent secondary comparison, not hands-on audio testing. The AI Leaderboard’s September 28, 2026 comparison is one source for the product categories; check vendors directly for current features and terms.
| Tool | Potential fit for a songwriter | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Suno | Quick complete-song concepts with vocals; useful for scratch demos and exploring song ideas. | Current model, lyric and section control, voice features, stems, credits, download limits and plan-specific rights. |
| ElevenLabs Music | Worth comparing if editing and API workflows matter more than a quick one-prompt demo. | Section editing, vocal language and control, API availability, and rights by tier. The workflow characterization comes from a secondary comparison; consult current official documentation. |
| Udio | A service to investigate for song creation, subject to current availability and export status. | Whether downloads are enabled and what terms apply to any current or licensed service. See the availability caveat below. |
| AIVA | A composition-oriented alternative to assess for instrumental or score-led writing. | MIDI workflow, editing and plan rights. Specific licensing terms are not established by the cited comparison, so confirm them with the vendor. |
| SOUNDRAW | More naturally aligned with background-music workflows than vocal songwriting. | Customization, distribution permissions and whether its license suits a released song or a background placement. |
| Stable Audio 3.0 | Consider for instrumental beds, textures and sound design when lyrics and vocals are not needed. | Output type, credits, exports and license. Stability AI says this tool does not generate vocals or lyrics. |
These are workflow matches, not rankings based on listening tests. For Stable Audio’s capabilities and vendor-stated terms, see Stability AI’s Stable Audio comparison and licensing explainer.
What should songwriters compare before committing?
A convincing first generation is only one part of the workflow. Decide how much control you need after the first draft, how you will move the material into production, and whether the plan supports the volume of work you expect.

Control over lyrics and song sections
If you want to revise a weak chorus or reshape a verse, check for section-level editing rather than assuming every generator offers it. Test whether you can guide lyrics, vocal style and arrangement in the way your writing process requires. Product descriptions alone do not establish that one tool will produce better-sounding results for your genre.
Stems, MIDI and DAW handoff
Stems can let you work with separate song elements in a DAW; MIDI can be useful when you want to edit musical parts rather than only use a rendered audio file. Check which exports your intended plan actually includes. For example, Suno’s listed stem-separation and MIDI features differ by tier, as shown in its current pricing and feature page.

Credits, downloads and cost
Compare recurring credits and download caps against your expected output, not just the entry price. A generous generation allowance is less useful if the plan limits the downloads or editing features needed to finish a demo. Prices and plan details can change; the figures below are the vendor-listed monthly prices displayed on October 4, 2026, and annual billing or taxes may change the effective cost.
| Suno tier | Monthly price shown | Listed allowance and features |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 50 daily credits; no monthly downloads or commercial rights. |
| Pro | $8 per month | 2,500 monthly credits, 20 song downloads, commercial-use rights and two stem-separation types. |
| Premier | $24 per month | 10,000 monthly credits, 60 downloads, commercial-use rights, Suno Studio, MIDI and three stem-separation types. |
These are Suno’s displayed monthly terms, not a guarantee that the same price or feature set will remain available. Its pricing page also says top-up credits require an active subscription to use. Check the live page before subscribing.

Can you release AI-generated music commercially?
Possibly, depending on the service’s terms and the plan and circumstances under which the track was made. Commercial-use permission is not the same thing as a guarantee that a track qualifies for copyright protection. Suno’s Help Center explicitly warns: “granting commercial use rights does not guarantee copyright protection!” It says copyright qualification depends on the applicable country or region. Read Suno’s paid-subscription rights explanation before using a track commercially.
Suno’s help pages distinguish between free and paid use, but describe the relevant timing in more than one way. Its paid-subscription page says tracks downloaded while subscribed have commercial-use rights, with examples including streaming distribution and use in film, television or games. A separate article says Pro or Premier subscribers when a song was created are considered owners and retain commercial-use rights after ending the subscription; it describes Basic/free songs as Suno-owned and for noncommercial use. See Suno’s explanation of ownership. Because creation and download circumstances matter, keep records of the plan and date for each track and follow the exact current terms rather than assuming one broad rule covers every song.

- Over 100 internal drum and instrument sounds including acoustic and electric pianos, synth leads, pads and more
Before release, check five separate issues:
- Service permission: Does the current plan permit your intended use?
- Output ownership or usage rights: What does the vendor say you own or may do with the track?
- Copyright: Does the relevant jurisdiction recognize protection for the material and circumstances involved?
- Inputs: Do you have rights to any uploaded audio, lyrics or voice material, and does the service permit the intended use?
- Distribution rules: Does your distributor or platform accept the track under its current policies?
These are distinct questions; a service’s commercial-use grant does not settle copyright status, rights in uploaded material or a platform’s acceptance policy.
Stable Audio’s vendor-stated license
Stability AI says Stable Audio 3.0 was trained using licensed AudioSparx material and Creative Commons material, and that generated audio may be commercialized under its Community License subject to that license’s conditions. Its explainer also describes a revenue threshold for Enterprise licensing and hosted tiers from $12 per month. Those are vendor claims and may change; review the live license and product explanation for current conditions, geography and pricing.

What is the current Udio download caveat?
Do not assume Udio downloads are available simply because a licensed service has been discussed. The Associated Press reported that Udio had stopped downloads under its arrangement with Universal while preparing a licensed service, and separately reported Warner’s resolution of its litigation with Udio and plans for a licensed service. That reporting does not establish that a planned service is currently available or that downloads have resumed. Check the AP report and Udio’s current service status before building a release workflow around it.
