The best affordable multipurpose laptop depends first on the software you need: choose Windows for Windows-only programs, a Chromebook for browser- and ChromeOS-based work, or a Mac for everyday productivity in Apple’s ecosystem. For a practical shortlist, compare the exact RAM, storage, ports, screen, and live price—not just a model name. Prices and availability vary by market and configuration; the dated prices below are US examples, not guaranteed current offers.

Start with the software you need

Before comparing screens or discounts, check that a laptop runs the applications your work, school, or hobbies require. RTINGS describes the HP OmniBook 3 14 as a Windows option for programs unavailable on ChromeOS. A Chromebook can be a better-value fit when browser apps and ChromeOS applications cover the job, and you are comfortable with cloud-based workflows. RTINGS’ budget laptop guide distinguishes these operating-system use cases.

  • Choose Windows if you depend on Windows desktop software or need broad application compatibility.
  • Choose ChromeOS if your work is mainly in a browser or compatible Android and ChromeOS apps, and the available storage and ports suit your routine.
  • Choose macOS if the Mac’s everyday productivity strengths and Apple ecosystem fit your needs and budget.

Affordable multipurpose laptop options

These recommendations cover distinct needs rather than declaring one winner for every buyer. Confirm the current listing, country, and exact configuration before purchasing; a model name can cover materially different hardware.

Model Best fit Configuration and screen Price context Important trade-off
Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 2026) Compact everyday productivity for buyers who want macOS 13-inch display; RTINGS describes good everyday productivity performance and battery lasting through a typical workday. Exact memory and storage configuration: not stated in the cited guide. Tom’s Guide reported $699 US, or $599 for eligible education buyers, in its 2026 review; confirm current price, stock, and eligibility. Education pricing is conditional, and the stated price is a dated US example rather than a guaranteed offer.
ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 (2023) Larger-screen Windows productivity on a budget RTINGS cites configuration M1605NAQ-ES51 with Ryzen 5 150, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. The review tested a configuration with an older Ryzen 5 7530U, so its test results should not be assumed to represent the cited processor variant. RTINGS positions it as an under-$600 Windows productivity choice; verify the current price and exact listing. Configuration differences matter; check the processor shown on the seller’s listing.
HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025) Budget Windows use, especially when Windows-only applications are necessary Available in multiple configurations. Exact processor, RAM, and storage depend on the listing and must be checked before purchase. Not stated in the cited RTINGS source; check the current listing for your market. Do not compare or buy by model name alone: confirm the hardware configuration.
Acer Chromebook Plus 516 Web-first productivity on a larger display TechRadar lists an Intel Core 3 100U, integrated Intel UHD graphics, 8GB LPDDR5, 128GB UFS, and a 16-inch 1920×1200 display. Not stated in the cited TechRadar source; check the current listing for your market. ChromeOS and cloud-based workflows need to match your apps. The cited configuration has less storage than Which?’s 256GB Windows recommendation, but that Windows threshold is not a Chromebook requirement.
Dell XPS 13 (2026) Highly portable Windows use for buyers willing to spend more than a typical budget Tom’s Guide’s reviewed configuration has 8GB RAM, 512GB storage, a 13.4-inch 2560×1600 touchscreen, two USB-C ports, and a weight of 2.2 pounds. Tom’s Guide reported a $699 US starting price, or $599 for eligible students, in its July 25, 2026 review. Verify the current price and student eligibility. The review notes poor webcam quality; two USB-C ports may mean a hub or dongle is needed for multiple wired devices.

Check RAM and storage before choosing a deal

Which? recommends aiming for at least 8GB of RAM on Windows and avoiding Windows laptops with less than 256GB of storage. For Chromebook buyers, it recommends at least 64GB of storage. These are buyer-guide screening recommendations, not guarantees that every workload will perform well. Which?’s laptop buying guide explains these thresholds.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Compare the specification on the exact retailer listing with the review’s tested configuration. The ASUS Vivobook 16 is a clear example: RTINGS names a Ryzen 5 150 model with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD, while its tested configuration used the older Ryzen 5 7530U. Do not assume benchmark or review observations transfer unchanged between variants.

Match the screen and portability to your routine

A 16-inch display such as the Acer Chromebook Plus 516’s gives more physical workspace than the 13-inch MacBook Neo or 13.4-inch Dell XPS 13, but screen size is only one part of the choice. The XPS 13’s 2560×1600 touchscreen and 2.2-pound weight make it a compact, higher-priced Windows option; the Acer’s 1920×1200 panel is larger and its cited configuration is web-focused.

Battery figures are not directly comparable across these sources. Tom’s Guide measured 14.5 hours in its test of the Dell XPS 13 (2026). Lenovo’s 2025 general buying guide gives 6 to 10 hours as a typical range for affordable laptops, a broad estimate rather than a standardized test result. Actual runtime depends on configuration, workload, settings, and test method. Tom’s Guide’s XPS 13 review and Lenovo’s budget laptop guide describe those separate contexts.

Account for ports and practical compromises

Count the connections you use before buying. The Dell XPS 13 has two USB-C ports according to Tom’s Guide; if you regularly connect several wired devices, an appropriate hub or dongle may be necessary. A reviewed detachable Chromebook discussed by RTINGS is portable and suitable for web browsing and media, but its keyboard is cramped and it also has only two USB-C ports. It can require a dock or dongle for multiple wired connections, making it less comfortable for long typing sessions.

A simple shortlist by buyer

  • Need Windows-only applications: compare the exact HP OmniBook 3 14 configuration with the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 listing. Prioritize compatible software, at least 8GB RAM, and adequate storage.
  • Mostly work in a browser: consider the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 if ChromeOS supports your applications and 128GB storage fits your needs.
  • Prefer macOS for everyday tasks: consider the MacBook Neo, checking current availability and whether any education price applies to you.
  • Want a small Windows laptop and a high-resolution touch display: the Dell XPS 13 offers that combination, but its cited US price is higher than the under-$600 category and the review flags webcam quality.

Oliver Trebilcock, Which? laptops expert and senior researcher, cautions: “The quality of cheap laptops is always a mixed bag, which is why it’s well worth checking our reviews of cheap laptops before you buy.”
