For most readers, a compatible Kobo eReader is the best starting point: Kobo lists EPUB and PDF support, and select models offer built-in OverDrive borrowing. PocketBook is another library-friendly option, while Android-based BOOX devices suit readers who want to use multiple reading apps. No brand-wide ad-free guarantee is established here, so check the exact model and regional listing before buying.
Which e-reader should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Kobo eReader | Readers who want a dedicated e-reader with EPUB/PDF support and, on compatible models, built-in OverDrive borrowing. | Whether your library and particular loan work with the device; whether your preferred model and listing are ad-free. |
| PocketBook eReader | Readers considering a second dedicated-reader ecosystem with documented access to some libraries’ Libby collections. | Libby support for the exact model and your library; ad status for the exact listing. |
| BOOX e-ink device | Readers who want an Android-based device that can run reading apps from different ecosystems. | App and library compatibility for your use case; the exact model’s ad status. The available evidence does not establish it as a better library or PDF reader than Kobo or PocketBook. |
These are workflow recommendations, not a tested ranking of screen quality or PDF performance. The cited sources confirm format support and app flexibility, but do not compare how these devices handle large, scanned, or complex PDFs.
Why Kobo is the strongest all-round starting point
Personal EPUBs and PDFs
Kobo’s supported-format documentation lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, and PDF, among other formats. Its computer-transfer instructions explain how to add non-protected EPUB and PDF files. This is distinct from a file protected with Adobe DRM: Kobo says those books require Adobe Digital Editions to put them on a reader.
Library loans
OverDrive’s e-reader setup guide says newer compatible Kobo models—including Libra Colour, Clara Colour, Clara BW, Elipsa 2E, and Sage—have OverDrive built in for borrowing and downloading ebooks from the Kobo catalog. That does not mean every library or title is available through the built-in path. Kobo’s Libby help page says the library ebook must also be sold on Kobo.com for the described supported-Kobo reading path.

How library borrowing and file transfers differ
“Supports EPUB” does not mean every library loan can be sent to the reader in the same way. Access depends on the loan’s format and protection, the device, and the library’s supported workflow.
- Direct on-device borrowing: Select compatible Kobo models can borrow through built-in OverDrive, subject to library and title compatibility.
- Computer transfer: For some protected EPUB or PDF loans, Kobo and OverDrive describe using Adobe Digital Editions to download and transfer the book. OverDrive’s ebook reading options guide distinguishes this process from opening an unprotected PDF in a compatible app.
- PocketBook access: OverDrive says newer PocketBook devices can connect to a library’s Libby collection; older models may use the built-in browser to download library ebooks. Check the specific device and library before relying on this route.
Kobo’s instructions for Libby and a 2024 KDL library guide both make clear that compatibility has limits. Check the loan’s available formats and your library’s instructions rather than assuming every Libby title works on every e-reader.

Choose carefully if PDFs are your main use
PDF support establishes that a device can open the format; it does not establish that pages will be comfortable to read. A PDF with fixed page layout behaves differently from reflowable text: its page design may not adapt to the reader’s screen. The cited sources do not provide comparative testing across screen sizes or complex documents, so there is no evidence-based PDF-first winner among these options.
- Check the exact model’s screen size and how you expect to use the PDF before purchasing.
- Consider whether your documents are text-heavy or depend on fixed layouts, tables, or detailed graphics.
- If possible, check a sample document on the device or confirm the seller’s return policy; format support alone cannot answer whether a particular PDF will be comfortable.
What “ad-free” means when you shop
Do not assume every model from a brand is ad-free. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current model-by-model ad-status list for Kobo, PocketBook, or BOOX. A Creative Bloq buying guide gives an example of a Kindle model offered in ad-supported and ad-free configurations; that example does not prove a universal policy for Kindle or any other brand.

When PocketBook or BOOX makes more sense
Choose PocketBook if its library route fits your setup
PocketBook is worth considering if your library confirms Libby access on the specific model you want. OverDrive documents a newer-device connection to a library’s Libby collection and a browser-based route for older devices, but the exact model and local library support remain decisive.
Choose BOOX if app flexibility matters most
BOOX devices are Android-based e-ink tablets, which can be useful when you want to run reading apps from several ecosystems on one device. A TechRadar comparison describes that app flexibility. The cited material does not establish a specific BOOX model as the best choice for library borrowing or PDFs, so confirm that the particular apps and loans you need work on the model you are considering.

Buying checklist
- Confirm that your library supports the device’s borrowing method and that your usual titles are available in a compatible format.
- For personal EPUBs or PDFs, distinguish unprotected files from Adobe DRM-protected books and check the transfer steps.
- For PDF-heavy reading, assess screen size and document layout rather than relying on a format list.
- Check ad status on the exact model and regional listing, not just the brand name.
- If you need multiple reading services, compare a dedicated reader’s built-in workflow with an Android-based device’s app flexibility.
