Before you sell, donate, recycle, or otherwise get rid of an old laptop, follow this order: save the files you want, remove personal information using the laptop’s supported erase or reset process, then choose a reuse or recycling route. A reset is not a universal guarantee of secure erasure, and disposal options depend on where you live.
1. Save the files you want to keep
Make a short list of documents, photos, downloads, and other files you may need. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) suggests transferring files to a replacement computer, saving them to cloud storage, or copying them to external storage. An external drive or USB flash drive is optional; use a backup method that suits you.
Before wiping the laptop, open the backup or confirm that the transfer completed. Once the laptop is erased, recovering files you did not save may be difficult or impossible.
2. Remove your personal information
Use the erase or reset instructions for your laptop’s operating system and follow the steps for that specific device. The FTC’s consumer guide to removing personal information from a computer links to instructions for Windows PCs, Chromebooks, and Macs.

Deleting files in the usual way is not necessarily enough for sensitive data. The FTC explains in its business guidance on securely disposing of devices that ordinary keyboard deletion may leave information on a drive, and recommends secure-erasure tools when disposing of old computers and portable media. A standard operating-system reset should not be treated as a universal secure-erasure guarantee.
If the laptop held highly sensitive information, or belongs to an employer or other organization, check the organization’s IT or security process before disposing of it. Use a suitable secure-erasure method when the data’s sensitivity calls for more than the device’s standard reset flow.

3. Choose reuse, donation, or recycling
Decide based on whether the laptop is still useful, how sensitive its stored data was, the effort and cost of available options, and local acceptance rules.
If the laptop still works
Consider continuing to use it, upgrading it, selling it, or donating it. Before handing it to another person or organization, complete the data-removal step. Check that a donation program or buyer accepts the laptop’s condition and specifications.

If it is no longer useful
Look for electronics collection or recycling options through your local government, the laptop’s manufacturer, or a retailer. Acceptance, fees, and drop-off availability vary by area, so check the program’s current terms rather than assuming disposal is free or that every location accepts laptops.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes electronics recycling and lists the independent R2 and e-Stewards certification standards as options to consider when looking for a recycler. Certification is a selection signal, not a guarantee about a particular local service. Before choosing, check its service area, accepted devices and batteries, fees, and whether it holds either certification. The EPA’s electronics donation and recycling guidance is a U.S.-oriented starting point; local rules and programs differ.

Handle the battery safely
Do not put a lithium-ion battery—or a device containing one—in household garbage or recycling bins. Follow local instructions for battery collection or disposal. If the battery is removable, check local guidance on how to handle it separately from the laptop.
