Before joining a coffee shop hotspot, review Android’s automatic Wi-Fi behavior, leave Private DNS on, decide whether you need a VPN, and verify that websites use HTTPS. These checks reduce avoidable risks; they cannot make an unfamiliar hotspot or the site you visit trustworthy.
1. Stop Wi-Fi from turning on or prompting unexpectedly
Android can offer separate controls for turning Wi-Fi on near saved networks and for notifying you about nearby open networks. The notification is only an alert; it does not itself connect your phone.
- Open Settings and go to Network & internet > Internet > Network preferences. On some phones, look under Connections or another network menu.
- Review Turn on Wi-Fi automatically and switch it off if you do not want Wi-Fi enabled near saved networks.
- Review Notify for public networks or similarly named open-network notification setting. Turn it off if you do not want alerts.
Labels and availability depend on Android version and manufacturer. If the route differs, search Settings for “Wi-Fi” or the setting name. Google’s Android network settings guide notes that some instructions require Android 12 or later and that options vary by device. Android’s Wi-Fi feature documentation distinguishes automatic Wi-Fi behavior from public-network notifications.
2. Keep Private DNS on
Google recommends leaving Private DNS enabled. On supported devices, find it under Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS; search Settings if that path is unavailable.

Private DNS protects DNS queries and answers—the lookups that help your phone find a website. It does not encrypt all internet traffic and is not a substitute for a VPN. Treat it as one layer, not a general “secure Wi-Fi” switch. Google explains the setting and its scope in its Android network settings guide.
3. Consider a VPN on an unsecured hotspot
A VPN can add privacy on public or unsecured Wi-Fi by routing traffic through the VPN service. The FTC advises businesses to use a VPN for remote access, and the FBI recommends choosing a VPN that starts upon initial connection if you must use unsecured Wi-Fi. A VPN does not prove that the hotspot, its sign-in page, or a website is legitimate. It also shifts some trust to the VPN provider; no provider is endorsed here. If you use one, confirm it is connected before doing anything you want protected.

HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the website, but it does not prove that the site is honest. Check for HTTPS and the correct site address before signing in, and do not enter credentials into a suspicious captive portal or a page reached through an unexpected link.

The FTC’s February 2023 consumer guidance says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” It also advises checking for HTTPS and keeping your operating system updated. CISA takes a more cautious approach to sensitive activity, advising users to “Avoid using open Wi-Fi networks to conduct personal business, bank, or shop online.” If you need to bank, shop, or handle personal business and the hotspot is open, use cellular data when possible.
