Data centers can use batteries to shift electricity use, take part in demand response, and support backup systems—but those are separate jobs. A battery configured for grid or peak-management services is not automatically sized or reserved to keep critical systems running during an outage. Facilities need to define each job, coordinate controls and operating reserves, and check applicable tariffs, market rules, and interconnection requirements.

Why data-center power planning is changing

U.S. data-center electricity use is growing, although projections remain uncertain. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 summary of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2024 Report on U.S. Data Center Energy Use estimates consumption at 58 TWh in 2014 and 176 TWh in 2023, with projected use of 325 to 580 TWh in 2028. The same DOE summary says data centers used about 4.4% of total U.S. electricity in 2023 and could account for approximately 6.7% to 12% in 2028. The 2028 figures are projections, not measured outcomes.

Growth is geographically uneven, and the DOE has described the need to plan for firm power and supporting infrastructure. Onsite storage can contribute flexibility, but DOE presents it alongside onsite generation, efficiency, grid infrastructure, tariffs, and planning—not as a standalone fix for every site.

What each power option is meant to do

Storage, demand response, and backup power can be coordinated, but they have different primary purposes. The distinction matters because the same equipment cannot be assumed to meet every operational or grid obligation.

Resource or action Primary job What determines what it can deliver
Battery energy storage system Shift energy use over time; potentially support facility flexibility or grid services. System design, controls, operating reserve, commercial arrangements, and applicable grid rules. DOE identifies onsite storage as a flexibility option; it does not establish a universal duration or service capability.
Demand response Reduce or shift normal electricity use when prices, incentives, or reliability conditions call for a response. Program or market rules, a facility’s ability to change load, dispatch controls, and any applicable contract or legal requirement. FERC defines the concept; participation and obligations depend on the jurisdiction and program.
UPS and its supported batteries Provide continuity or ride-through for the loads connected to the UPS when normal supply is disrupted. UPS configuration, supported load, battery condition, transfer and response requirements, and the required outage duration. The cited sources do not give a universal runtime or sizing value.
Onsite generation Provide onsite electricity as part of a facility’s power and resilience strategy. Installed equipment, operating permissions, fuel or energy supply where relevant, controls, and site engineering. DOE includes onsite generation in its broader portfolio, but the sources do not prescribe a particular technology.

What backup power options do data centers use?

UPS for continuity of supported loads

An uninterruptible power supply is designed to maintain power for the loads it supports when normal supply is interrupted. Battery-backed UPS equipment can provide continuity or ride-through, but that role does not by itself establish how long a facility can operate through an extended outage. The critical loads to be supported, required duration, transfer behavior, and operating constraints have to be defined for the site.

Onsite generation as part of the backup plan

Onsite generation can be part of a facility’s power and resilience portfolio. Whether it can carry particular critical loads, for what duration, or under what conditions depends on the installed system and site-specific engineering. The DOE sources support considering onsite generation and storage together; they do not identify a universally appropriate generation technology or configuration.

Coordinated systems, not interchangeable labels

A facility may coordinate UPS equipment, batteries, onsite generation, cooling, controls, and IT operations. That coordination needs to account for how and when power transfers, which loads are protected, what reserve must remain available, and how assets are restored or recharged after dispatch. A rackmount UPS battery backup is a product category, not a substitute for engineered facility-scale power infrastructure.

Can data centers use batteries for demand response?

Yes, a data center may use battery storage as part of a demand-response or other flexibility strategy if its equipment, controls, operating plan, and applicable commercial and regulatory arrangements support the service. A battery can potentially let a facility reduce grid consumption during a defined period while serving some of its needs from stored energy. The exact response, duration, and ability to participate are system- and program-specific; the available sources do not establish a universal performance figure.

FERC defines demand response as “Changes in electric usage by demand-side resources from their normal consumption patterns in response to changes in the price of electricity over time, or to incentive payments designed to induce lower electricity use at times of high wholesale market prices or when system reliability is jeopardized.” In practice, a response can be voluntary or program-driven, depending on the arrangement. FERC says effective demand response can help reduce price volatility, mitigate generation market power, and enhance reliability.

Rules can vary by market and jurisdiction. FERC’s 2025 assessment describes Texas legislation directing ERCOT to develop a demand management service enabling mandatory curtailment of large loads, including data centers, during firm load-shed events. That Texas example does not establish that every data center is enrolled or that the same requirements apply elsewhere.

How do data-center batteries help the grid?

Storage can shift when a facility draws electricity from the grid: a site may charge at one time and use stored energy at another, subject to the battery system’s design and operating plan. With suitable controls and commercial arrangements, storage may also contribute to facility flexibility or grid services. DOE identifies onsite storage as one way data centers can become more flexible grid participants.

Those possibilities are not automatic. A site must determine who can dispatch the battery, which grid or tariff rules apply, what reserve is needed for facility operations, and how the system will recharge after use. Any service that affects the facility’s power supply also has to be coordinated with its operational requirements. The sources do not establish a standard battery duration, efficiency, cost, or service capability for data centers.

Why grid services do not guarantee outage backup

Demand response changes or shifts consumption under defined conditions; backup power supplies designated loads when normal supply is disrupted. A battery used to support peak management or grid response may not have enough available energy, power capacity, or reserved charge to cover critical loads during an outage. Conversely, a battery reserved for emergency backup may not be available for routine grid dispatch.

A 2025 arXiv preprint proposes a control framework for centralized data-center UPS systems, including battery storage and possible fast grid response. It is proposed research, not evidence of a proven deployment, official standard, or vendor product. More broadly, a facility’s ability to provide any grid service depends on suitable equipment and controls, contracts, interconnection, operating permissions, and local rules.

How to evaluate options for a specific site

There is no universal ranking, sizing formula, cost comparison, or battery-chemistry recommendation in the cited sources. A site-specific engineering and commercial study is needed to determine what a system can do and whether its benefits justify its costs and footprint. Start by documenting the operational requirement for each proposed use, then evaluate the following questions:

  • Primary job: Is the asset intended for UPS ride-through, outage backup, peak management, demand response, another grid service, or a defined combination?
  • Critical load and duration: Which loads must remain supported, for how long, and with what response or transfer requirements?
  • Dispatch and reserve: Who controls dispatch? What energy or operating reserve must remain for emergencies, and how will the asset recharge?
  • Rules and permissions: Which tariffs, demand-response programs, interconnection requirements, market rules, and local laws apply?
  • Integration: How will UPS equipment, batteries, onsite generation, cooling, facility controls, and IT operations coordinate?
  • Economics and footprint: What are the project and operating costs, space needs, and potential value streams at this site?

These decisions should be assessed together rather than treating a battery’s grid-service value, outage role, or peak-management value as interchangeable. The answer depends on the site’s loads, power system, operating limits, and local market arrangements.
