For eligible deposits at federally insured institutions, a bank and a credit union have the same standard federal insurance limit: generally $250,000 per depositor or member-owner, per insured institution, per ownership category. Both forms of federal coverage are backed by the U.S. government. The key is to confirm that the specific institution is federally insured and that your account type and total balance fit within the applicable rules.

How federal deposit insurance compares

What is protected Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank Eligible share accounts at a federally insured credit union

These limits are comparable; one is not a higher federal protection tier than the other. That does not establish that every bank and credit union has the same financial condition, customer service, fees, or access. The comparison here is specifically about federal protection for eligible deposits if an insured institution fails.

How the $250,000 limit applies

The limit is not automatically available for every account you open. The insurer adds together eligible accounts that you hold in the same ownership category at the same insured institution. Separate branches of the same bank do not create separate limits. Different ownership categories may qualify for separate coverage when their requirements are met and the institution’s records accurately show the ownership.

NCUA coverage includes principal and dividends posted through the credit union’s closing date, subject to the applicable limit. Its categories include single ownership, joint ownership, certain retirement accounts, and qualifying trust accounts; each has detailed rules. FDIC coverage also depends on account ownership category and applicable requirements. Check the agency’s guidance rather than assuming that a different account number or product name creates additional coverage.

Confirm that the institution is federally insured

Do not rely on the words “bank” or “credit union” alone. FDIC insurance applies to deposits at FDIC-insured banks; NCUA share insurance applies to federally insured credit unions. NCUA notes that some state-chartered credit unions instead use private insurance. Private coverage is not NCUA federal share insurance and does not carry the same stated federal backing.

  1. Identify the exact legal institution where the account is held, not just a brand, app, or service provider.
  2. Check its insurance status using the appropriate agency’s official tools and materials: FDIC deposit insurance guidance or NCUA share insurance guidance.
  3. If it is a credit union, verify whether coverage is federal NCUA insurance or private insurance, and identify the insurer.
  4. Review the account’s ownership category and aggregate balance at that institution to assess whether the amount falls within the applicable limit.

Not every product sold at an institution is an insured deposit

A bank or credit union may offer or sell products that are not deposits. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, insurance policies, and annuities are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance; NCUA likewise excludes products such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, insurance policies, and annuities from share insurance. FDIC materials also say safe-deposit-box contents are not insured by the FDIC. The place where a product is sold does not determine whether it qualifies for deposit insurance. See the FDIC deposit insurance overview and NCUA coverage rules.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

Matching federal limits answer a specific question: what federal deposit or share insurance generally applies when an insured institution fails? They do not show which individual institution is more likely to fail, establish that all institutions are equally financially strong, or compare account rates, fees, eligibility, service, or convenience. Those are separate factors to assess when choosing where to bank.
