Use both. Transaction alerts can bring selected activity to your attention quickly, while statements and transaction histories give you a wider record to review for unfamiliar charges. Alerts are prompts to check—not a guarantee that your bank will flag every suspicious transaction. Review the transactions themselves regularly and contact your bank promptly about anything you do not recognize.
How alerts and statements help you catch different problems
| What to compare | Transaction alerts | Statements and transaction history |
|---|---|---|
| When they help | When a selected event or threshold triggers a notification. Available alerts and delivery methods depend on the bank and your settings. | Statements provide a retrospective record; online transaction histories may be checked more frequently. |
| What they cover | May cover only configured or required event types. No alert does not prove that every transaction is legitimate. | Usually provides a broader list to review, but helps only if you examine it. |
| Best use | Notice a selected event and check it promptly. | Reconcile activity, spot unfamiliar merchants or small debits, and keep a record for a dispute. |
| Main limitation | Coverage and delivery vary; not every alert product reports every transaction. | A periodic statement may arrive after a transaction, and reviewing it alone does not stop further activity. |
This is a practical comparison, not the result of a direct test showing that one method detects more fraud. For example, the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s 2015 study examined overdraft behaviour, not fraud discovery. It found that signing up for text alerts or mobile banking apps was associated with a 5% to 8% reduction in unarranged overdraft charges, while signing up for both was associated with a 24% reduction. Those figures describe the study’s measured overdraft outcome; they do not show that alerts catch a given share more fraud than statements. Read the FCA study summary.
Why you should review transactions, not just balances
A balance can look plausible even when an unfamiliar payment has gone through. Check the transaction list for merchants, dates, amounts, and locations you do not recognize. Watch for small suspicious debits as well as larger charges: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) notes that fraudulent activity may appear months after card information is stolen and recommends close monitoring of account activity and statements. See the CFPB’s account-monitoring guidance.
Merchant names may differ from the name of the shop or service you remember, so check the details before deciding a charge is unauthorized. If it remains unfamiliar, ask your bank rather than ignoring it.

A practical routine for monitoring your account
- Turn on useful alerts. In your bank’s official app or account settings, check which transaction or balance events actually trigger a notification. Do not assume an alert covers every payment.
- Keep your contact details current. This helps messages reach you. Treat an alert as a reason to check your account, not as a reason to disclose passwords, PINs, or security codes in a reply.
- Review recent activity regularly. Open your transaction history and each statement, including paper statements if that is what you receive. Look for unknown merchants or locations, small test debits, duplicate-looking entries, and payments that do not match your records.
- Contact the bank promptly about an unfamiliar transaction. Use the number in the official app, on your card, or on a statement. Ask what to do to block or replace a compromised card or other payment instrument, and follow the bank’s formal dispute steps. The CFPB advises immediate contact; if a debit card was compromised, it advises asking the bank to cancel and replace it. Read the CFPB’s unauthorized-transaction guidance.
- Keep a record. Note the transaction date, amount, merchant description, case number, and dates you contacted the bank. Retain copies of written follow-up.
How quickly must you report an unauthorized transaction?
Report a suspicious transaction immediately, but do not assume that one country’s deadline applies everywhere. Notice periods and liability rules depend on where you bank, the type of transaction, and the circumstances. Check your account agreement and your local regulator’s guidance.
- United States: For an unauthorized electronic withdrawal shown on a statement, when the card, PIN, or security code was not lost or stolen, CFPB guidance says to notify the bank right away and no later than 60 days after the statement showing the withdrawal was sent. Other circumstances have different rules: for example, a lost debit card or PIN can make a two-business-day notice period relevant to liability. After notice, the bank generally has 10 business days to investigate (20 for a new account less than 30 days old), with further provisional-credit and resolution rules and exceptions. Check the CFPB guidance for the applicable situation.
- Canada: The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says deposit-account disputes are usually due within 30 days after the statement date, but the deadline can vary by institution. It advises notifying the institution immediately and continuing to monitor the account. Read FCAC’s dispute guidance.
- India: Reserve Bank of India directions call for SMS alerts for electronic banking transactions and reporting at the earliest. For certain third-party breaches, the directions describe zero customer liability when reported within three working days of receiving the bank’s communication, capped liability for four to seven working days, and treatment under the bank’s policy after seven working days. Liability depends on the circumstances in the circular. Read the RBI directions.
Why an alert is not a guarantee
Alert coverage is not necessarily comprehensive. Under Canada’s federal consumer-protection framework, banks must send certain low-balance or low-available-credit alerts without delay; the default threshold is $100, and a customer may change it. That requirement illustrates how a mandated alert can be tied to specific conditions rather than every transaction. See the FCAC framework.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
Likewise, the FCA’s findings on text alerts and mobile banking apps concern overdraft behaviour. They support the value of receiving information automatically and being able to act quickly, but they do not establish how effectively alerts detect fraud.
