Which Baldur’s Gate 3 update is current?
Larian Community Team’s September 29, 2026 Small Hotfix notice identifies game version 4.1.1.7631656. It reports fixes for a crash when starting through the GOG Mac launcher, a PS5 crash when creating map markers, and a beard appearance issue. The announcement does not list the current build for every platform, so treat that number as the version named in that notice—not proof that every PC, Mac, Steam Deck, PlayStation, or Xbox installation displays the same build.
Check the installed version in your launcher or console’s game information, then compare it with the release note for your platform. Larian’s August 2026 announcement listed distinct version numbers by platform, illustrating why a single number should not be assumed to apply everywhere.
What to check before you install
- Find the official note for the update. Read Larian’s release note and confirm its date, named platform, and fixes. A hotfix may address only particular issues or systems; a listed fix is not a guarantee that every crash or bug is resolved.
- Compare your installed build with the announced build. Check the version shown by your platform rather than relying on a version number quoted in an older article or announcement. The September 2026 note does not give a full platform-by-platform version matrix.
- Protect important saves. Back up saves you would not want to lose before a major update. Larian’s Patch 9 preparation notice is a historical example: it said saves from Patch 8 or earlier would not be compatible with Patch 9, and advised using a new profile and backing up the previous local profile folder if older saves needed preserving. That past transition does not establish that the September 2026 hotfix makes saves incompatible.
- Check your mods before opening a modded save. Larian’s support guidance says a mod that needs an update displays an “Update” button in the in-game Mod Manager. For modded multiplayer, every player needs the exact same mods at the same version. An older Larian patch announcement also cautioned that mods could become temporarily incompatible after patches or hotfixes.
- Confirm cross-save compatibility. Larian cautions that cross-saves can fail when the game versions on two platforms differ. It also recommends checking that mods used across PC and console are available on both. Check each platform’s version and mod availability before relying on a cross-save.
- Allow for installation space, not just download size. Larian Community Manager Salo explained in a March 2026 Hotfix #36 thread that Steam or GOG may need temporary disk space to recompile existing files. That space should be freed after installation, but the exact requirement depends on the update and is not specified by the September hotfix notice. Do not treat a space estimate from an older patch as a current universal requirement.
Why platform and update date matter
Larian’s August 2026 Xbox Play Anywhere announcement listed these platform-specific versions at the time:

These are figures from that dated announcement, not the September hotfix’s complete current version list. Use them to understand why platform-specific checking matters, not as a substitute for checking the build shown on your device.
Earlier updates also show why reading the actual fix list is useful. In March 2026, Hotfix #36 addressed save-loading frame drops and crashes, other crashes, an Xbox inventory and trade tooltip issue, and a Mac Honour Mode character-creation blocker. Its scope was not the same as the September 2026 hotfix.

What if the update causes a problem?
First, note your platform, installed version, and whether the affected save uses mods. Check Larian’s note and support guidance for a matching issue, and confirm that mods are updated and multiplayer participants have matching versions. If an update involves a major patch transition, avoid overwriting a save you need to preserve; Larian’s Patch 9 advice about separate profiles and backing up a local profile applies to that historical transition, not as a general rollback procedure for current updates.
The September 2026 notice does not provide rollback steps or a complete list of platform versions. Do not assume an older branch or rollback option is available on every platform.
