In Baldur’s Gate 3, a strong turn is about more than choosing an attack: you manage action resources, read the hit modifiers, and use initiative and terrain to set up your party. The game is turn-based and draws on D&D 5e, but its implementation is not identical to tabletop rules. If you know the basic turn structure but still feel unsure how those pieces fit together, use the in-game action preview as your guide to the specific character, attack, and target.

What can you do on a turn?

Combatants act in initiative order. On your character’s turn, treat these as separate resources rather than assuming every option is interchangeable:

  • Action: Many attacks and abilities use an action. Check the ability’s current game description and the UI to see its cost.
  • Bonus action: This is available for abilities that authorize it; it is not a second action automatically granted for any purpose.
  • Movement: Use it to change distance, reach, cover, or elevation. Moving can improve an attack opportunity, but it may also expose the character to danger.
  • Reaction: A reaction responds to a trigger when one occurs. It is not simply another action you choose to spend on your turn.

The 2014 D&D Basic Rules describe a tabletop turn as movement and one action, with a bonus action only when an ability grants one and a reaction tied to a trigger. That is useful context, not proof that every tabletop interaction works the same way in BG3. For the game, the character’s current UI and ability description are the practical authority. BG3 Wiki’s combat overview documents game-specific mechanics; the 2014 Basic Rules are tabletop rules.

How initiative and shared turns create openings

BG3 uses a d4 plus Dexterity modifier for initiative, with higher results acting earlier, according to the community-maintained BG3 Wiki initiative page. When characters you control share an initiative result, you can coordinate their movement and other available turn resources in any order instead of treating their turns as isolated. That can let one character set up a target or position before another commits an attack; it is an opportunity to coordinate, not an automatic damage bonus.

How to read advantage, disadvantage, and hit chance

Advantage and disadvantage change attack rolls; neither means a guaranteed hit or miss. Sources vary by attack and situation, and can include class features, conditions, spells, items, range, and whether the attacker is threatened. For example, the BG3 Wiki says an attack against a prone target can have advantage when the attacker is within 3 m (10 ft), while some ranged attacks made while threatened or beyond a weapon’s normal range can have disadvantage. These are examples, not a complete or permanent list. The community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s advantage and disadvantage page describes examples and categories.

Before spending a limited-use ability or committing to an attack, select the intended target and inspect the modifiers shown in the game. This helps catch a relevant condition, range issue, or other situational factor for that specific attack. Do not substitute a tabletop rule for the game’s displayed result: for instance, the 2014 tabletop rule for ranged attacks near a hostile creature is comparison context, not a guarantee of identical BG3 behavior.

Why elevation and position matter

Elevation can affect both attack rolls and reach. The community-maintained BG3 Wiki high-ground rules page documents a +2 attack-roll modifier for an attacker about 2.5 m (8 ft) above a target and a -2 modifier when about that far below. It also notes that elevation can extend the horizontal reach of most ranged abilities when targeting enemies below. The Sharpshooter feat can remove the low-ground penalty for ranged weapon attacks, according to that page.

These numbers are implementation details documented by a community-maintained wiki, not a Larian statement. An elevated position does not guarantee a bonus on every attack: the attack type, distance, and situation matter, and ordinary melee range limits how often vertical separation applies. Check the attack preview rather than relying on scenery alone.

How to prepare before combat

Larian’s developer article describes using stealth and positioning before initiative, and notes that light and darkness affect stealth. It also describes enabling turn-based mode while exploring to track enemy movement or prepare around hazards. In that context, sneaking can help the party get into position for an opening strike, but it does not guarantee that every opening attack produces surprise or a critical hit. Larian’s development-era guidance puts it this way: “Sneaking is a really useful technique for positioning your party prior to the initiative roll, ensuring you get the first strike.” — Larian Studios, “A little about combat and stealth”.

  1. Observe: If you need time to track enemy movement or hazards, enable turn-based mode during exploration.
  2. Position: Use stealth and the terrain to choose where the party begins, including whether a higher firing position is available.
  3. Start combat: Begin the encounter when the party is placed as intended. Assess the actual initiative order and attack modifiers once combat begins; the opening situation depends on the encounter and game rules.

A quick way to compare your options

When deciding between moving, attacking, or using an ability, compare the choices on the dimensions that change the outcome:

  • Cost: Does the option use an action, bonus action, movement, reaction, or more than one resource? Confirm in the current character UI.
  • Hit chance and risk: What modifiers are displayed? Does the option put the character in a threatened position or at an unfavorable range?
  • Position and reach: Will movement change distance, elevation, or the set of attacks available?
  • Timing: Can another character with a shared initiative result act first to set up the target?
  • Target effect: Does the ability damage, knock prone, restrain, or otherwise affect the target’s ability to act? Read the current in-game description rather than assuming a tabletop version applies.

BG3 rules and tabletop D&D rules are not interchangeable

Larian describes BG3 as based on D&D 5e, and its official feature page frames combat as turn-based with team-based initiative. The tabletop 2014 Basic Rules can clarify the broad distinction between an action, a feature-authorized bonus action, and a triggered reaction, but they do not establish that every distance, modifier, ability, or interaction behaves the same in the video game. For an immediate decision, use the game’s UI; use tabletop material as background, not as a substitute for BG3-specific behavior. See Larian’s official BG3 page and the D&D 2014 combat rules.
