Baidu announced DuerOS at CES on January 5, 2017, as a voice-first AI operating system designed to bring conversational interaction to many kinds of devices—not just one branded speaker. Its strategy combined Baidu’s cloud capabilities with third-party developers, hardware makers and, eventually, Baidu’s own Xiaodu smart speakers. The available dated figures show substantial reported adoption by 2019, but do not establish DuerOS’s scale or availability in 2026.
What is DuerOS?
DuerOS is Baidu’s conversational AI operating system. Baidu described it as software that could be integrated into products including phones, televisions, speakers, cars and robots, allowing users to interact through natural-language voice dialogue. The company’s launch announcement emphasized cloud support and third-party integration, making DuerOS a platform intended to work across device categories rather than a single assistant gadget. Baidu’s January 2017 announcement introduced the system publicly.
The platform built on earlier work: Baidu’s history says its Duer team introduced a Duer mobile assistant app at Baidu World Conference in 2015. DuerOS marked a broader platform ambition, linking assistant software and cloud services with developers and device manufacturers. Baidu’s DuerOS history describes the platform and its development.
When did Baidu launch DuerOS?
Baidu announced DuerOS at CES on January 5, 2017; its official announcement was published January 8. The launch placed the platform in the expanding consumer voice-assistant race, but the announcement itself is evidence of Baidu’s strategy—not proof that DuerOS later won a market-leading position.

How was DuerOS different from a single-device assistant?
The central distinction was scope. Baidu pitched DuerOS as software manufacturers and developers could integrate into different products, rather than an assistant tied to one Baidu-made device. That model relied on partnerships to extend the platform into households, cars and other settings. Baidu’s historical milestone list names work involving Ainemo, HTC, Lenovo, Haier, Midea, Harman and Vivo. Those are historical partnerships and announcements; they do not confirm that the products remain on sale, supported or compatible today. Baidu’s notable events list records those milestones.
The strategy also included first-party hardware. In its 2019 investor presentation, Baidu identified Xiaodu Smart Speaker 1S, Xiaodu Smart Speaker Metal and Xiaodu Smart Speaker Play as DuerOS-powered products. This shows how Baidu’s platform approach could span partner devices and products associated with its own Xiaodu brand; it does not establish present-day production, regional compatibility or current availability. What could DuerOS do?
DuerOS was presented as more than a command-and-response voice layer. Baidu’s 2019 materials described DuerOS v5.0 features including full-duplex continued conversation, routines, a home feed, home communication and DLNA casting. These details illustrate the platform’s capabilities as Baidu described them in 2019; they should not be read as confirmation that every feature is available on every device or remains supported now.
The Little Fish home robot offered a visible example of voice software paired with a screen-based device. In a January 2017 interview, Baidu chief scientist Andrew Ng explained the value of a display for restaurant choices: “It’s actually much more efficient to just show you on a touchscreen.” TIME’s contemporary coverage places the comment in the context of comparing a screen with a speaker reading choices aloud.

What did Baidu report about DuerOS adoption?
Baidu’s dated company figures indicate that the platform had reached significant reported scale by 2019. They are historical company-reported metrics, not independently comparable measures of current use.

The 2019 adoption and developer figures come from Baidu’s 2019 investor presentation; the 2021 skills-store description appears in Baidu’s annual filing. The figures use different measures and dates, so they should not be collapsed into one current platform count.

How did DuerOS compare with Alexa?
The clearest supported comparison is about platform strategy, not a numerical contest. DuerOS was framed as an operating system Baidu could place in many device categories through manufacturer and developer integrations, while also appearing in Xiaodu smart speakers. Baidu’s launch and historical materials characterize DuerOS as a Chinese-language assistant platform, but the sources here do not provide matching, contemporaneous figures for Alexa’s users, devices, queries or skills. A defensible head-to-head ranking is therefore not established.

The cited materials do not verify DuerOS’s current operational status, active device lineup, regional availability, current usage, or active partner and developer support in 2026. Baidu’s latest dated company-wide description in these sources is from 2021; its DuerOS history and milestone pages do not provide a clearly dated 2026 update. Treat the 2019 usage figures, 2021 skills figure and named older product models as historical, rather than evidence that a particular device can be bought or used today.
