The BAFTA Games Committee is a volunteer committee of BAFTA members that helps govern the Games Awards and contributes games-industry expertise to BAFTA’s charitable and sector work. It reviews and sets Games Awards rules
BAFTA describes its sector committees as central to steering their awards. Each year they review and set the relevant eligibility, campaigning and voting criteria. This is a rule-setting and oversight function; it does not mean the committee personally makes every operational decision or chooses every winner.
The Games Awards rules displayed by BAFTA in October 2026 give the Games Committee a particularly clear power: The Games Committee is the arbiter of all category eligibility.
In practice, the committee can ask entrants for additional information when a game’s qualification is unclear. The same rules give it discretion over appeals involving games released in early access. Those powers allow the committee to resolve boundary cases while keeping the published categories workable as release models change.
It contributes industry expertise to BAFTA’s mission
Committee members are volunteers, not paid employees appointed to run a commercial awards business. BAFTA presents their contribution as part of its charitable mission and as a way to bring informed games-industry experience into the organisation’s work. The committee therefore has a governance and advisory dimension beyond the annual awards calendar.
It participates in the membership pathway, but does not make the final decision
BAFTA says panels of elected sector-committee members consider applications for full voting membership by craft or professional role after membership staff conduct an initial review. The Board of Trustees makes the final approval. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that the Games Committee alone approves every full-voting-membership application.
Does the Games Committee pick the Games Awards winners?

For Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game, BAFTA’s displayed rules assign the relevant voting stages to Games voting members. Other categories move from longlists to expert juries. Each applicable jury has nine to 12 experts under the rules displayed in 2026, and a current or former Games Committee member chairs each jury. A committee member serving as a jury chair does not turn the whole committee into the jury or make the committee the sole selector of winners.
This separation protects two different functions. The committee can maintain consistent category standards and resolve eligibility disputes, while voting members and specialist juries assess the games in competition. A committee chairing a particular jury is therefore evidence of sector expertise and process leadership, not proof that the committee as a body selected every winner.

How are elected Games Committee members chosen?
BAFTA’s published mechanism is an internal election: BAFTA members elect representatives from among BAFTA’s membership. Sara Putt, then BAFTA chair, described the process in the organisation’s September 4, 2024 announcement: All of them have been elected from within our membership, by our membership.
The process described in BAFTA’s public material can be understood in four stages:
- Candidates come from the BAFTA membership. The electorate and the pool of representatives are both within BAFTA; this is not a public vote open to anyone who follows the awards.
- Members vote in the sector election. BAFTA’s announcement identifies the global membership as the electing body. The available material does not establish a particular ballot format or a universal nomination threshold, so those details should not be assumed.
- Successful representatives serve two-year terms. The term applies to elected sector-committee representatives under the published election description.
- Elections are annual and staggered. Approximately half of the elected committee retires each year on rotation. This keeps elections regular while preserving continuity rather than replacing the entire elected group at once.
BAFTA’s 2022 Annual Report & Accounts says sector elections follow rules and procedures and that results are monitored by an independent scrutineer. That provides an oversight safeguard, but it does not by itself reveal the detailed voting method or candidate requirements.

Are all Games Committee members elected?
No. BAFTA’s live personnel page separates elected and co-opted Games Committee members. As checked on October 30, 2026, it listed eight people in each group. Those counts describe the names shown on that roster; they do not establish a permanent constitutional entitlement to eight elected and eight co-opted seats.

The distinction matters because “committee member” is not synonymous with “elected representative.” Co-option may allow BAFTA to add relevant expertise or maintain a balanced working group, but the sources do not state the criteria, appointing authority or duration. It is safer to report the status BAFTA displays than to infer a process that has not been published.
How many elected places are there?
The number must be dated. BAFTA’s September 4, 2024 election announcement referred to seven elected Games Committee spaces at that time. The live personnel page checked on October 30, 2026 lists eight elected names. These statements can both be accurate for their respective dates; the earlier seven-seat figure should not be presented as the current total, and the current list should not be converted into a claim that eight is a fixed constitutional number.
Roster changes, election cycles and co-option can alter the names shown. For a current count, the live “Our People” page is more authoritative than an older announcement, while a dated announcement remains useful evidence of what the structure looked like at that point.
Who chairs the BAFTA Games Committee now?
Charu Desodt is chair as of October 30, 2026. BAFTA announced on October 27, 2026 that Desodt succeeded Tara Saunders after a committee-chair election process. The chair is an elected Games Committee member and sits on BAFTA’s Board of Trustees.

BAFTA’s September 2025 announcement identified Saunders as chair and Des Gayle as deputy. The October 2026 roster does not label a Games deputy chair, so the older deputy identification should not be carried forward as current without a newer confirmation. BAFTA’s announcement confirms that elected sector-committee members elect sector officers, but it does not publish a ballot-by-ballot account of the chair election.
What is the committee’s relationship with BAFTA’s Board?
The Games Committee operates under authority delegated by the Board of Trustees in the games sector. That arrangement gives the committee room to handle specialist awards and sector matters while leaving ultimate organisational governance with the Board. The chair’s trustee role creates a formal link between the committee’s games expertise and BAFTA-wide oversight.
Delegated authority should not be read as unlimited authority. The published rules identify specific powers, such as category-eligibility arbitration and handling certain early-access appeals. Other decisions remain with voting members, juries, BAFTA staff or the Board, depending on the matter.

Annual staggered elections balance accountability with continuity. Members have recurring opportunities to choose representatives, while only part of the elected group normally changes in a given year. That helps preserve knowledge of eligibility precedents, jury operations and ongoing sector work.

The structure also clarifies who has a mandate from the membership. Elected representatives can point to a defined member vote and term. Co-opted members may add expertise to the working committee, but their legitimacy comes through a different route that BAFTA has not fully described publicly. Treating both categories as identical would hide that governance distinction.

Use the date and the source together:
- Check BAFTA’s live “Our People” Games Committee roster for current names and whether each person is labelled elected or co-opted.
- Check the latest Games Awards rules for the current wording on eligibility, appeals, voting stages and jury arrangements; those rules can change for a later awards cycle.
- Use dated BAFTA announcements for election results and chair transitions, rather than relying on an older article that may identify a former chair or deputy.
- Separate a committee role from a jury role. A committee member may chair a category jury without the full committee deciding that category’s winner.
On the evidence publicly described by BAFTA, the most accurate summary is that elected members are chosen by BAFTA’s membership for two-year, staggered terms, while a separate co-opted group appears on the current roster under a selection process that has not been detailed.
