Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bacteria can use collisions as movement cues. In a study of Pseudomonas aeruginosa published in Nature Microbiology on October 6, 2026, wild-type cells reversed direction within seconds of hitting neighboring cells. In a crowded micro-maze, they explored more of the maze and were more likely to reach its exit than a mutant that did not sense collisions, according to an EPFL news release.
How collision sensing may help bacteria move together
The study proposes that physical contact helps P. aeruginosa adjust its collective movement. In crowded areas, frequent collisions prompt reversals, which can keep the group disordered and mobile rather than pushing cells into a jam. At a colony edge, where there is more open space, cells can remain aligned and move outward.
“In response, they reverse direction within seconds,” first author Laure Le Blanc said, as quoted in the EPFL release. The researchers interpret this response as an active form of collective organization: the group’s movement changes in response to mechanical contact, rather than order emerging only as a passive physical effect.
What the micro-maze experiment found
Researchers compared wild-type bacteria with a mutant that does not sense collisions and continues moving forward after striking other cells or boundaries. The team used live microscopy, single-cell tracking and computer simulations, alongside experiments in confined micro-mazes with obstacles.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Measure reported by EPFL | Wild type | Collision-insensitive mutant |
|---|---|---|
| Average fraction of the maze explored | 92% | Not stated in the EPFL release |
| Cells reported to reach the exit | 20% | 1% reached the exit within four hours |
| Movement described in the release | Reversed after collisions | Traveled farther when alone, but became trapped in dense groups |
The 92% figure is the average fraction of the maze explored by wild-type cells; it is not the percentage that reached the exit. The separate exit result was that 20% of wild-type cells eventually reached it. For the mutant, EPFL reports that 1% reached the exit within four hours.
What the results do—and do not—show
The maze results support the idea that collision sensing can help bacteria move through crowded, obstacle-filled spaces. They do not establish that this mechanism causes bacterial spread through human tissues, determines biofilm formation in patients or improves infection outcomes. The EPFL release presents those as possible implications, not demonstrated clinical findings.

The work may also interest researchers designing robot swarms, but the release does not report tests of a robotic system. Alexandre Persat, an EPFL professor, described the broader challenge this way: “Whether in fish schools, bird flocks or human crowds, moving as a group can offer safety and efficiency, but it can also lead to congestion and jamming.”
