Choose Babbel if you want guided, contextual lessons with explicit review; choose Duolingo if a game-like format and a free starting tier are more likely to keep you practicing. Neither approach is a universal winner. Check that your target language has the course depth you need, then compare the features and renewal terms actually offered to you.

Which app fits your learning style?
Choose Babbel if you prefer a guided course
Babbel may suit you if you want lessons presented with explicit goals and context, plus a course path that includes review. This can make the experience feel more like working through a planned curriculum than playing a series of short challenges. Whether that format keeps you coming back depends on your preferences.
Choose Duolingo if a game-like routine helps you practice
Duolingo may be the better starting point if rewards, short activities, and a daily habit make practice easier to maintain. Its free tier also lets you begin without subscribing. If ads, hearts, or access to particular tools matter to you, check what the current paid plans include in your market.

Let your target language and level decide
Do not use the total number of languages as a proxy for course depth. Babbel and Duolingo do not describe identical endpoints for every language, and a named endpoint on one course says nothing about another. Look up the exact course you plan to study and confirm it covers your intended level before paying.
How much does Babbel cost compared with Duolingo?
There is no dependable price winner to name from the available service information. Your actual cost can depend on country, subscription length, promotions, billing route, and renewal terms. Babbel requires a subscription for full course access; Duolingo offers free learning alongside paid Super and Max tiers. Babbel subscription details and Duolingo plan descriptions explain the broad models, but the amount and terms shown at checkout are what matter for your purchase.
- Compare the same subscription duration where possible.
- Check the renewal date, renewal price, cancellation terms, and whether you are billed through the app store or the service.
- For Babbel, try the free first lesson in the course you want; for Duolingo, try its free tier. Decide whether the paid features solve a problem you actually have.
What does the learning research say?
The evidence supports a measured conclusion: people in particular studies made progress using these apps, but the studies do not prove that one is best for every language, learner, or goal.
A direct Babbel–Duolingo comparison
A 2025 peer-reviewed study by Matt Kessler, Shawn Loewen, and T. Gönülalc examined language-learning gains and user experience with Babbel and Duolingo. The authors reported improvement across multiple measured skills and a positive, moderate relationship between time spent using the apps and posttest scores. That is evidence of gains among learners in the study, not a universal comparison that settles which app you should choose. Read the study in Computer Assisted Language Learning.

Duolingo alongside or instead of beginner French classes
A 2026 Cambridge University Press study compared beginner French learners over a university semester in three conditions: classroom instruction alone, Duolingo alone, and classroom instruction combined with Duolingo. Groups improved across nearly all measured outcomes and had broadly similar gains; the combined group gained more on the study’s tu/vous pragmatic measure. The authors noted design and participant limitations, including that Duolingo-only participants were selected by usage range. The study concerns beginner French under those conditions; it does not establish that Duolingo can replace instruction for every learner. Read the Cambridge study.
What app reviews can—and cannot—tell you
A 2025 analysis examined 190 user reviews for each app. In that sample, Duolingo reviews tended to praise gamification and simplicity, while Babbel reviews emphasized structure and cultural context. Those are themes from a limited review sample, not a representative poll, an independent test of learning outcomes, or a prediction of your experience. Read the review-analysis paper.

Will either app prepare you to speak in real situations?
Both services describe speaking-related tools, but practice inside an app is not the same as unscripted conversation with another person. If your goal is travel, work, or sustained conversation, treat an app as one part of your practice: add opportunities to listen and speak with people, and choose a course whose level matches the situations you need to handle.
