Choose Babbel if you want a more explicitly structured paid course; choose Duolingo if you want to start for free and prefer gamified practice. Neither app is proven here to produce better Spanish-learning outcomes overall. Your best fit depends on the lesson style you will use consistently, the speaking and listening practice you want, and the total price and renewal terms available where you live.

What Babbel’s Spanish course is like
Babbel describes its Spanish offering as interactive lessons supported by grammar guides and AI conversation practice. It lists both Spanish (Mexico) and Spanish (Spain), which can help you choose a course aligned with the variety you want to study. Its subscription help pages describe access to self-study courses on the web, phone, and tablet, with progress synced across devices.
Babbel’s course content includes structured beginner lessons as well as culture, travel, and grammar topics. The company says lessons average about 15 minutes; treat that as Babbel’s description, not an independently measured lesson length. Its format may suit you if you want a more clearly signposted course rather than choosing practice activities as you go.

What Duolingo’s Spanish course is like
Duolingo says its course units focus on communication goals and cover vocabulary and grammar related to those goals. The company describes redesigned major courses, including Spanish, as aligned with CEFR goals and containing speaking and listening lessons. These are Duolingo’s descriptions of its curriculum and features; they do not provide a direct outcome comparison with Babbel.
Rank #2
Practice is gamified, and Duolingo says it combines gamification and learning science to help keep learners motivated. That approach can be appealing if a playful routine helps you return to lessons regularly. The practical test is whether the format keeps you engaged while giving you the kind of Spanish practice you need.

Can you learn Spanish with Duolingo for free?
Yes. Duolingo says learners can access its courses for free. Its paid tiers are optional: Super adds benefits such as ad-free lessons, unlimited hearts, and additional practice options, while Max includes Super benefits plus AI-powered features. Duolingo notes that feature availability can vary by geography.
That makes Duolingo a straightforward way to begin without subscribing. Consider an upgrade only if its specific features matter to your routine; the course being free does not by itself establish how far it will take you toward your personal Spanish goal.

Choose Babbel if structure is your priority
- You prefer lessons presented as a structured self-study course, with grammar guidance.
- You want to choose between the listed Spanish (Mexico) and Spanish (Spain) offerings.
- You value the described AI conversation practice and are willing to pay for a subscription.
Choose Duolingo if a free start and gamified practice matter most
- You want to access Spanish lessons without paying for a subscription.
- You are more likely to maintain a routine when practice feels game-like.
- You want to try speaking and listening lessons as part of the course described by Duolingo.
Compare the routine, not just the feature list
Before paying or committing to one format, ask yourself which app you are more likely to open consistently and whether its practice matches your goal. If you need structured grammar instruction, Babbel emphasizes that more clearly in its product description. If removing the cost barrier is important, Duolingo offers free course access. For either app, evaluate the features actually available to you rather than assuming a paid tier or a particular lesson format is necessary.
Do Babbel or Duolingo guarantee fluency?
No guarantee of fluency or universal superiority is established by the product descriptions cited here. They explain how the companies design and describe their courses, but they are not a directly comparable measure of Spanish outcomes. Duolingo reported more than 250 language courses and more than 130 million monthly active users as of December 31, 2025, in its 2026 Form 10-K; those company-wide figures are not evidence of Spanish-course results or a comparison with Babbel.
