Short answer: Google Cloud has a documented pricing advantage for one specific cost: its network pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer in a no-charge category. That does not make a Google Cloud VM free, and it does not establish a universal winner. Compute, operating system, disks, region, runtime, and VM capacity still matter; Azure costs also depend on the selected configuration and traffic. Compare matched deployments rather than headline hourly prices.
What matters most for an always-on stream
A VM must run your streaming software continuously, encode or relay the video as configured, and send it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The right comparison depends on the actual workload—not just the cloud provider’s largest advertised network limit.
- Destination traffic: Google lists VM-to-YouTube transfer in a no-charge category. This rule is specific to that traffic category; it does not apply to every Google Cloud destination or resource.
- VM capacity: Both providers document VM-level network limits. These are ceilings or allocated limits, not guarantees of the sustained throughput or stability of a particular encoder and stream.
- Continuous runtime: Estimate the VM and operating system for the hours you intend to run, along with storage and supporting resources.
- Region and configuration: Prices and available VM sizes vary. There is no reliable monthly winner without matching region, VM size, OS, uptime, storage, and destination.
Google’s documentation says the maximum possible egress rate depends on the machine type, and its egress limit represents the maximum possible data rate. Microsoft says outbound throughput is allocated per VM across all NICs and destinations. Neither statement is a YouTube ingest or end-to-end streaming guarantee. Azure VM vs Google Cloud VM
| Consideration | Google Cloud Compute Engine | Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines |
|---|---|---|
| VM-to-YouTube network charge | Google’s network pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer in a no-charge category. Compute and other resource charges still apply. Google Cloud: Network pricing | No current official Azure US retail listing establishes an equivalent no-charge rule for traffic to YouTube. Estimate bandwidth for the selected configuration and destination. |
| VM network capacity | Maximum egress depends on machine type; the published limit is a maximum, not an assured stream rate. Google Cloud: Networking overview for VMs | Outbound throughput is allocated per VM across all NICs and destinations. Treat it as a VM-level limit, not an end-to-end bitrate promise. Microsoft Learn: Azure Virtual Machine Network Throughput and Bandwidth |
| Compute and OS cost | Depends on region, zone, VM type, OS, and runtime. Use the selected configuration in Google Cloud’s pricing tools. Google Cloud: Compute Engine pricing | Depends on VM size, OS, and runtime; Microsoft directs users to estimate the selected configuration. Azure Pricing Calculator |
| Storage and retained resources | Include persistent disks and any other resources in the estimate; exact costs depend on the configuration and location. Google Cloud: Compute Engine pricing | Include storage and other resources. An OS disk retained after stopping a VM can continue to incur charges. Azure Pricing Calculator |
Google Cloud also prices other outbound transfer by destination and Network Service Tier; inbound transfer is free under the described tiers, while outbound charges vary. Do not apply the YouTube-specific category to unrelated traffic or use one generic egress rate for every workload. Google Cloud: Network pricing

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to estimate a fair monthly cost
Use a matched set of assumptions for both providers. If the stream only runs for part of a month, use that runtime; if it must remain live all month, estimate continuous operation rather than extrapolating from a short test run.
- Define the stream: Record resolution, frame rate, encoder, target bitrate, and whether the VM will run all month. No published source establishes a tested minimum VM size for any particular encoder workload.
- Choose a region, OS, and VM size: Select a suitable configuration for the software you plan to use. Verify current SKU availability and pricing for the relevant region and subscription.
- Estimate compute for the intended runtime: Include the VM and OS license where applicable. Use each provider’s calculator with the same operating hours and comparable configurations.
- Add disks and supporting resources: Include the OS and data disks plus any IP or other deployed resources your setup needs. On Azure, account for an OS disk that remains after the VM is stopped.
- Apply destination-specific transfer pricing: For Google Cloud, use the current VM-to-YouTube category for traffic sent to YouTube, and separately estimate any traffic to other destinations. For Azure, estimate bandwidth for the selected setup; no current official Azure US retail listing provides an equivalent YouTube-specific comparison.
- Test the actual deployment: Validate the stream with your chosen software and YouTube ingest destination before relying on a VM configuration for continuous operation. A published network ceiling alone cannot establish stability.
Google Cloud notes that prices vary by region and zone. Microsoft’s Azure cost guidance likewise calls out OS, VM size, runtime, storage, and bandwidth as estimate inputs. Neither provider’s documentation supplies a single apples-to-apples monthly bill for an unspecified stream. Google Cloud: Compute Engine pricing · Azure Pricing Calculator

Which should you choose?
Choose Google Cloud when YouTube-bound transfer is a major cost factor
The documented no-charge VM-to-YouTube transfer category is a useful advantage if your traffic qualifies. Compare VM, OS, disk, and other resource costs anyway; this network rule does not establish that the overall deployment is cheaper.
Choose Azure when its configuration and estimate fit your needs
Azure can be evaluated on the same basis: select a region, VM size, OS, runtime, storage, and bandwidth assumptions, then review the resulting estimate. The available evidence does not support a blanket claim that Azure is more or less expensive for this workload.

Do not choose by maximum bandwidth alone
Provider limits describe VM networking, not sustained encoder performance or YouTube ingest behavior. No published benchmark establishes a comparison of Azure and Google Cloud while running the same always-on stream. A dependable decision requires testing your software, configuration, and destination.
