The Axe-Fx II is a rack-mounted guitar preamp and effects processor that builds complete signal chains—amp, cabinet, and effects—in presets. It can feed powered full-range speakers or monitors for performance, and connect to a computer for playback, recording, reamping, and MIDI control. It is discontinued, so buyers are generally evaluating used units; revision matters, particularly when connecting an MFC-101 foot controller.
What the Axe-Fx II is—and what it is not
Fractal Audio Systems describes the Axe-Fx family as preamp/effect processors. The Axe-Fx II Owner’s Manual describes factory presets as complete guitar-in-to-stereo-out paths built from amp, cabinet, and effects processing. In practical terms, one preset can define the modeled guitar chain rather than relying on a separate collection of individual pedals and an amp modeler.
The Axe-Fx II is a signal processor, not a power amplifier or loudspeaker. For a live rig, the manual documents connecting it to powered full-range/FRFR cabinets. For quieter use or studio work, it also documents headphones, monitors, and computer connections. The output equipment still matters: the processor shapes the signal, while the connected powered speaker, power amp and cabinet, or monitoring system makes it audible.
How it fits into a live rig
A live setup can use the Axe-Fx II as the central preamp and effects unit, with presets holding the amp, cab, and effects configuration. Its stereo output can feed a suitable live playback system, such as powered full-range speakers. A foot controller can make preset changes and effects control practical onstage; the MFC-101 is the documented Fractal controller option.

Before choosing a controller or cable, identify the exact Axe-Fx II chassis revision and the MFC-101 revision. The original, Mark II, XL, and XL+ do not all have identical control-port options. The later Fractal manual documents FASLINK use with an MFC-101 Mark III on the XL, while other variants have different connection choices. Consult the relevant manuals and inspect the rear-panel ports rather than assuming that a cable or controller arrangement for one revision applies to another.
Connecting an MFC-101 through the MFC Control port
Fractal Audio Systems’ archived version 4.01 owner manual documents a standard, non-crossover CAT5 cable between the MFC-101 and the Axe-Fx II MFC Control port. That connection carries bidirectional communication and power. The manual explicitly warns: “Do NOT connect the MFC-101 power adapter to the MFC-101 or to the Phantom Power jack of the Axe-Fx II while using the MFC Control port connector to connect the two units.”

The later version 15.0b manual adds two safety points: do not connect the MFC jack to Ethernet equipment such as a computer, hub, switch, or router, and power off before connecting or disconnecting the cable. This is a dedicated controller connection, not a network port, even when the connector or cable resembles Ethernet hardware.
Using the Axe-Fx II with a computer
The Axe-Fx II can participate in a computer-based recording and playback workflow over USB. Fractal Audio Systems’ version 15.0b manual specifies USB audio at 48 kHz/24-bit, with two audio channels from the computer to the processor and up to four channels from the processor to the computer. It also specifies two-way MIDI over USB. The manual describes using computer playback through the unit, recording processed and dry guitar tracks, reamping, and using MIDI for control and automation.

These are capabilities documented by the product manual, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current computer or operating system. The manual says drivers must be installed for USB functions to work correctly, but its operating-system requirements are historical. Check the driver and software situation for the specific computer before relying on USB in a current setup.

The Fractal Audio Wiki identifies the Axe-Fx II series as discontinued and reports Ares 2.00, released in September 2019, as the final firmware. The Wiki also reports that the MFC-101 is no longer available from Fractal Audio. These lifecycle details come from a community-maintained source; for support, repair, firmware files, or regional availability, confirm directly with Fractal Audio or a dealer. Fractal’s official support page directs users to its knowledge base and regional dealers for product evaluation or repair outside the United States and Canada.

Because revision-specific connections and used-unit condition can affect the practical cost of ownership, check the following before committing:
- Exact revision: Confirm whether it is the original Axe-Fx II, Mark II, XL, or XL+, and compare its rear-panel connections with the manual for that revision.
- Basic operation: Test the screen, knobs, input and output connections, USB, MIDI, and any control port you plan to use.
- Included items: Confirm the power cable and any accessories or controller that the listing claims to include. If you need an MFC-101, verify its revision and compatible connection method.
- Preset and data handling: Ask whether the unit has been reset or backed up as appropriate, and establish how you will preserve any presets you want before changing its contents.
- Purchase protections: Check return terms and whether repair support is realistically available in your region.
No current secondhand price or listing availability is established here, and the discontinued status does not by itself establish a defect rate or repair prognosis. Compare a particular used unit by its revision, physical condition, included controller and cabling, software requirements, and likely support—not just its asking price.
