For a self-managed forum, chat server, or other community app, compare AWS Lightsail, DigitalOcean Droplets, and Hetzner Cloud—not an unspecified “AWS” plan. Lightsail is the closest AWS match for a bundled VPS-style setup; DigitalOcean offers a focused Droplet platform with separate backup options; Hetzner may suit workloads whose location, server type, and traffic allowance fit its current catalog. There is no universal cheapest or best choice: region, resources, outbound traffic, public IPs, and backup scope determine the practical comparison.
Which AWS service belongs in this comparison?
For a small self-managed community server, start with Lightsail. AWS presents it as a simpler lineup of virtual servers and related foundational services, including block storage, static IP addresses, DNS management, load balancers, and snapshots. AWS Lightsail is therefore a closer bundled VPS comparison to Droplets and Hetzner Cloud than EC2.
EC2 is AWS’s broader, more configurable compute service. AWS’s decision guide, last updated September 29, 2026, characterizes Lightsail pricing as fixed and predictable, while EC2 offers flexible pay-per-use or commitment pricing and broader scaling options. If you need that range of compute configurations, compare EC2 separately rather than treating it as one equivalent plan. AWS’s Lightsail, Elastic Beanstalk, or EC2 guide
Compare the whole deployment, not the entry price
Use the same workload assumptions for each provider: region, CPU class, memory, disk, monthly outbound transfer, IP requirements, backup retention, and any attached storage. The products do not use identical catalogs or billing components, so unlike entry plans cannot establish a cheapest provider.

How the providers compare for this workload
AWS Lightsail: bundled and AWS-adjacent
AWS lists a Linux/Unix Lightsail plan at $5 USD per month with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer on its pricing page accessed October 4, 2026. AWS says prices vary by Region, so treat those figures as the displayed plan details, not a universal quote; recheck the chosen Region and current listing. Lightsail pricing
Lightsail can be a natural starting point if you value bundled monthly pricing or expect to use AWS’s adjacent services. Its convenience does not remove the need to check whether the chosen instance, transfer allowance, and snapshot approach fit the app. Also account for lifecycle costs: AWS says stopped Lightsail instances continue to incur charges until they are deleted. DigitalOcean Droplets: choose the VM, then choose backup coverage
DigitalOcean defines Droplets as Linux-based virtual machines. Its published catalog shows configurations and bandwidth allowances, while backups and snapshots are additional decisions to include in the cost comparison. The listed weekly backup option costs 20% of Droplet cost; the pricing page also lists usage-based backup pricing. These are product-page figures accessed October 4, 2026, and should be checked against the current plan and backup selection. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing
DigitalOcean documents that hourly and monthly Droplet charges depend on configuration and that the catalog can change. Use the live plan listing for the intended region and server size rather than relying on a remembered entry price. Droplet pricing details

Hetzner Cloud: assess location, traffic, IPs, and attached storage
Hetzner’s location documentation lists Falkenstein, Nuremberg, and Helsinki in Europe; Ashburn and Hillsboro in the United States; and Singapore. The same documentation cautions that product availability differs by location and traffic between separate network zones is billed as normal internet traffic. Because that page was last changed in 2021, confirm location, orderability, and features in the live console before selecting a server. Hetzner Cloud locations
Hetzner’s cost-optimized Cloud page says EU Cloud servers include at least 20 TB of traffic, while plan availability, prices, and additional-traffic terms depend on the current plan and location. Treat the allowance as a plan- and location-dependent product statement, not a guarantee for every server worldwide. Hetzner Cloud servers

Build a like-for-like monthly estimate
Before choosing, price the same deployment at each provider using the intended region and current calculator or plan pages. Record the assumptions so that a low headline price does not hide a missing component.
- Set the workload and location. Estimate CPU demand, memory, disk capacity, expected monthly outbound traffic, and the region closest to most members. Check that the provider offers the server type and features there.
- Match server resources. Compare vCPU class and whether CPU is shared or dedicated, plus SSD or NVMe capacity. Add a separate volume only where the design requires one.
- Add network costs. Include monthly egress and overage pricing, public IPv4 or IPv6 charges, and any load balancer or floating IP. For Hetzner, include the applicable location and network-zone terms.
- Price recovery options. Compare backup cadence, recovery points, charge, and coverage of attached storage. Include snapshot storage charges where applicable.
- Check billing details. Note currency, VAT or other tax treatment, and whether stopped resources continue to accrue charges.
Plan and add-on prices can change. Use the providers’ current pages for a quote tied to the intended region and configuration rather than treating figures in a comparison as permanent.
Choose by fit, not by provider reputation
- Choose Lightsail as the first AWS option to price if a bundled VPS-style plan and a possible path into AWS’s related services matter to you.
- Choose DigitalOcean as a candidate if its Droplet configurations and direct backup choices fit your region, resource needs, and recovery budget.
- Choose Hetzner as a candidate if its live location and server availability, traffic terms, IP costs, and storage model fit the community’s needs.
For any of the three, the decision should follow the same workload estimate and a recovery plan that accounts for all application data. The published product information does not establish a universal performance or value winner for every community server.
