Start with the AWS invoice’s dates and service line items, then compare MediaLive usage in that period with your channels’ state history and configuration. A YouTube stream that was not visibly live does not prove MediaLive had no billable resources: idle channels and some push inputs can be charged, and outputs configured on a running channel can still incur charges when paused. The cause of your increase is account-specific; YouTube being the destination does not, by itself, identify the AWS service responsible.
First, confirm which AWS charges increased
Match the invoice or billing report to the exact billing interval, then identify the AWS service and usage line items that changed. Do not assume the full increase is MediaLive: an AWS streaming workflow can have separate charges for services such as MediaPackage and CloudFront. Whether your YouTube workflow uses either service is account-specific.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS guide gives a configuration-specific example of $1.99 per hour for MediaLive input and outputs in US East (N. Virginia), using standard pricing and an HD AVC input with four SD AVC outputs. That is an estimate for those assumptions, not a general MediaLive rate or a forecast for your channel. Region, configuration, duration, output profile, related services, and changes to pricing all matter. AWS explains the assumptions in its deployment-planning guide.

For each channel, compare the billed period with its state history. MediaLive channel states include Idle, Recovering, Running, Starting, and Stopping; channel state changes can also be emitted as CloudWatch events. Use those records to determine when a channel was running rather than relying on whether the YouTube player appeared live.

Check inputs, including push inputs that seem unused
Inventory every input and note whether it is push or pull, whether it is attached, and whether its channel was running during the billed interval. An unattached push input can incur an idle input charge; so can a push input attached to a channel that is not running. AWS says idle pull inputs are not charged, so do not treat them as equivalent to idle push inputs.
Then compare each input’s configured specification with the actual source. Codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate settings affect the billed input tier. AWS gives the example that selecting HD incurs the HD charge even if the actual source is SD. The settings also allocate resources, so do not lower them blindly: choose specifications appropriate to the most resource-intensive source characteristics. AWS summarizes the rule as, “You pay for the option that you specify.” Read Input specifications settings before changing a tier.

Count configured outputs on running channels
For every running channel, count all configured outputs and note their type, codec, and frame rate. AWS charges for each output configured in a running channel; pausing an output does not stop that charge. As AWS puts it: “The charge applies even if the output has been paused by the user or by Elemental Live.”
Also check whether A/B forensic video watermarking is enabled. In a supported output group, AWS bills each A/B variant as a separate output. A YouTube destination does not change the need to inspect the channel’s configured outputs and their billing treatment. The relevant rules are in Pricing in MediaLive.

Review channel class, add-ons, and reservations
Channel class and add-ons
Check the channel class and any enabled add-ons for each channel that ran. AWS documents different rates for standard two-pipeline and single-pipeline channel classes, as well as add-on charges on running channels. Link inputs use a separate pricing model. Because rates depend on configuration and Region, check current regional pricing before estimating the savings from a change.
Reservations
If you have input or output reservations, verify that each reservation’s Region and input or output attributes match the channel configuration. AWS applies reservation minutes only to matching items; the pool replenishes monthly and unused minutes do not carry forward. A reservation that exists in the account is not proof that a particular billed item received its benefit. Consult AWS’s guides on how input and output reservations work and working with reservations.

Build a period-by-period comparison
For the billing interval that rose, record the following for each channel and compare it with a prior, lower-cost interval. This makes it easier to distinguish a longer runtime from a configuration or resource-count change.
| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Channel state and runtime | When it was Running, Idle, Starting, Stopping, or Recovering |
| Inputs | Input type, attached channel, configured codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate |
| Outputs | Number and type of configured outputs on running channels, including paused outputs and any separately billed A/B variants |
| Channel features | Channel class and enabled add-ons |
| Reservations | Region and attributes, and whether they match the billed input or output |
| Other services | Separate AWS line items, such as MediaPackage or CloudFront, if present |
Use the invoice’s service and usage details alongside channel configuration and state history. Without those account records, it is not possible to identify the cause of a particular increase or calculate a corrected bill.
Make changes carefully, then verify the next bill
Once a line item maps to a resource or setting, change only what you can confirm is unnecessary. For example, an input tier should match the source, while an output should be removed only if it is no longer needed. After a change, compare the next billing interval against the same set of records; otherwise, a runtime change can be mistaken for configuration savings, or vice versa.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon findings and what to do
- The channel looked off, but charges continued: check whether it was Idle rather than running, and whether idle channel or push-input charges applied.
- An output was paused: check whether its channel was still running and the output remained configured; pausing does not end the output charge.
- An input was not receiving video: check whether it remained attached to a running channel, since inactive attached inputs can still count.
- The source was SD, but the input tier was HD: review the configured specification against the actual source and correct it only if the lower setting is technically appropriate.
- A reservation was expected to reduce the charge: compare its Region and attributes with the billed item, and check whether reservation minutes were available and applied.
- The total is higher than the MediaLive amount: inspect other AWS service line items separately rather than attributing the whole workflow cost to MediaLive.
For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube loop, a separate cloud option
StreamNeo is a separate service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a way to diagnose or remove charges already incurred by MediaLive. If your use case is a prerecorded 24/7 loop rather than a live camera production, its process is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a home computer or connection staying on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video is streamed as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free first day.
