For most websites, make video click-to-play. An explicit play action avoids surprising visitors with sound or motion and does not depend on autoplay being allowed by their browser. Use muted autoplay only when it serves a clear purpose, and keep a visible, keyboard-operable way to start and control playback if it does not begin automatically.

Autoplay vs. click-to-play: what changes for visitors?

Consideration Autoplay Click-to-play
How playback starts The page attempts to start the video without a play action. Visitors may be surprised, particularly if sound is present. The visitor chooses when to start the video.
Browser behavior Playback depends on browser policy, settings, sound state, context, and sometimes visibility. A browser may block it. A deliberate play action avoids relying on autoplay permission, though normal playback constraints still apply.
Control and accessibility Needs appropriate controls and careful handling of motion and sound. Applicable accessibility requirements depend on the content and how it behaves. Makes the start decision explicit, but the player and video content still need to be accessible.
Implementation Handle a rejected play request and provide a manual start option. Provide a clearly labeled, operable play control.
Good fit Consider for purposeful, silent motion when user control remains available. A sensible default for articles, instructional videos, and general-purpose pages.

Click-to-play is a practical default, not a claim that every autoplay implementation violates accessibility standards. The choice should reflect the page’s purpose and the controls it gives visitors.

Why autoplay cannot be treated as guaranteed

Autoplay is an attempted action, not a cross-browser promise. Browsers apply their own policies, and visitors can change autoplay settings. Muted video generally has broader permission than video with sound in the browser guidance below, but muted playback can still be restricted.

Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers

Chromium’s published policy allows muted autoplay. Autoplay with sound may be allowed in particular circumstances, such as after user interaction with the site, when desktop media-engagement conditions are met, in specified installed-site contexts, or when a top-level frame delegates permission to an iframe. These are Chromium policy conditions, not a guarantee for every Chrome installation or other browser. Chromium advises: “Use autoplay sparingly.” Read Chromium’s autoplay policy.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

If you implement autoplay, check the promise returned by play() and respond when playback is rejected. Chromium also recommends using native media controls unless there is a specific reason for custom ones. That gives visitors a working manual route instead of an apparently broken or blank player. See Chromium’s developer recommendations.

Firefox

Mozilla says Firefox blocks media with sound by default. Visitors can change the default for sites, including choosing to block all autoplay media. Page markup does not override those preferences. See Mozilla’s autoplay settings guidance.

Safari on macOS and iOS

Apple’s Safari video documentation says autoplay video elements require playsinline on macOS and iOS. By default, autoplay is allowed only when the video has no audio track or is muted. Playback can pause if audio is added, the video is unmuted without user interaction, or the element goes off-screen. A silent audio track still counts as an audio track under the documented behavior. Check Apple’s current guidance against the Safari and device versions you support. Read Apple’s Safari video documentation.

WebKit’s 2016 iOS policy article explains the historical background: muted or audio-free video may autoplay, unmuting without a user gesture pauses playback, and playsinline permits inline playback on iPhone. For current implementation decisions, use Apple’s current documentation rather than treating the older article as a current compatibility guarantee. Read WebKit’s iOS video policy article.

Is autoplay bad for accessibility?

Autoplay is not automatically a WCAG failure in every case. The relevant requirements depend on what starts automatically and what users can control.

What WCAG 2.2 addresses

Success Criterion 2.2.2 covers auto-updating information that starts automatically and is presented in parallel with other content. Unless an exception applies, it requires a mechanism to pause, stop, hide, or control the update frequency. Do not expand that specific criterion into a blanket claim about every short video that autoplays. Read WCAG 2.2, Success Criterion 2.2.2.

W3C’s informative Failure F93 describes a failure scenario involving an HTML media element that autoplays without a pause or stop control under Success Criterion 1.4.2. F93 is a technique, not the normative text of WCAG itself. It also notes that user agents need not support autoplay and encourages honoring user preferences and letting users start media explicitly. Read W3C’s Failure F93 technique.

Practical control guidance

Section508.gov advises avoiding autoplaying audio and video, providing visible, keyboard-accessible, clearly labeled controls, and not relying on browser controls alone. It also recommends placing pause, stop, or hide controls near the start of the content or the moving media. Treat this as government accessibility guidance and a practical best practice, not as an additional WCAG success criterion. Read Section508.gov’s multimedia guidance.

When muted autoplay may be appropriate

Muted autoplay can make sense when silent motion has a clear editorial or functional role—for example, when the motion itself conveys information before a visitor chooses to hear more. It should not be used merely because a browser permits it. Give visitors a clear manual play route, useful controls, and a fallback for blocked playback; do not assume that muted autoplay will work for everyone.

How to implement autoplay without leaving visitors stuck

  1. Decide whether autoplay has a real purpose. If it does not materially help the page, use click-to-play.
  2. Keep a visible manual play control. Make it clearly labeled and operable by keyboard, so visitors can start the video when autoplay is denied.
  3. Handle playback failure. Check the promise returned by play(); if it rejects, leave the player in a usable state and expose the manual play option.
  4. Give visitors playback controls. Prefer native controls unless a specific need justifies custom controls, and ensure any custom controls are discoverable and operable.
  5. Test the blocked-autoplay path. Check the browsers, devices, settings, and embedded contexts you support, including cases where the video is off-screen or audio is present. Verify that a visitor can still start, pause, and control the media.
