Automate company address discovery by matching the company to a legal entity first, retrieving its address from a traceable source, and then validating the address for the purpose you need. A company name alone is not a dependable identifier, and a registered office, customer-facing location, and deliverable postal address are not interchangeable.

What automated company address discovery should return

A useful workflow returns more than a street address. It should retain enough context to explain which entity was matched, where the address came from, what kind of address it is, and when the record was retrieved. That context lets a person or downstream system distinguish an official registered office from a storefront or a postal address that has been checked for delivery.

For each result, aim to preserve the raw company name, normalized search name, jurisdiction, company or registry identifier, address type, source URL, retrieval date, and any match-confidence or validation signals the provider supplies. Keep the source address separate from later standardized or corrected versions.

Choose the address type before choosing the lookup

Need Source or method What it can establish Important limit
Legal identity and registered address Official business register, or company-data provider that links to registry records A registry record associated with a legal entity, potentially including its registered address Fields and availability vary by jurisdiction; the registered address may not be customer-facing.
Customer-facing business location Business listing, such as Google Business Profile A listed location and details supplied or edited by a verified owner A listing match can be ambiguous and does not by itself settle legal-entity identity.
Mailing quality Address-validation service Checks and standardizes supplied address components; may correct or complete them It validates an address you provide; it does not identify which company owns it.
Coordinates or spatial analysis Geocoding service Coordinates for an address or place A coordinate result alone does not prove the input address or company match is correct.

Make the address type an explicit field in your output schema. If the business record supplies only a registered office but the application needs a delivery location, do not silently label the registry address as a mailing address.

Build a reliable discovery pipeline

1. Match the company to an entity

Start with the raw company name and, where possible, add the country or jurisdiction and a stable identifier such as a registration number. Normalize conservatively—for example, standardize whitespace and punctuation for searching, but retain the original name. Do not discard legal suffixes or jurisdiction context if those details help distinguish related companies.

OpenCorporates documents an API that can return company records with registered-address information, registry links, identifiers, and source context. API access requires a key, and usage limits depend on account type and plan. Treat the returned record as a discovery and reconciliation result: check its jurisdiction and linked registry context rather than assuming every similarly named company is the intended entity. See the OpenCorporates API documentation and its API information.

2. Retrieve and retain the address evidence

Prefer an official register for the relevant jurisdiction or a provider that preserves a link to the underlying registry entry. Store the provider’s entity identifier and the source URL alongside the retrieved address. A source link and retrieval timestamp make the result auditable and support later refreshes.

3. Resolve conflicting or uncertain matches

Do not automatically choose the first fuzzy-name result when multiple entities share a name, when identifiers are absent, or when the jurisdiction does not fit. Send those records to a human review queue. A map pin or plausible street name is not proof that the location belongs to the intended legal entity.

4. Validate a postal address only when the use case requires it

If you already have an address and need to improve its postal formatting or component quality, use an address-validation service downstream of entity discovery. Google distinguishes its Address Validation service, which checks and standardizes address components and returns geocode information, from geocoding, which converts an address to coordinates. Google also describes a user-confirmation pattern: submit an address, inspect the structured result, and ask the user to confirm or correct it where needed. CASS support is described for addresses in the United States and Puerto Rico; do not generalize that coverage worldwide. See Google Address Validation overview and Address Validation and Geocoding comparison.

5. Keep evidence, corrections, and coordinates separate

Store the original address as received, any normalized or corrected address, the validation outcome, and coordinates in separate fields. This makes it possible to tell whether a provider supplied an address or a later service transformed it. Recheck records periodically when current location matters; there is no universal refresh interval established for every country or use case.

How to match a company name to the right business

Use the strongest available identifiers in this order: jurisdiction and registration number, another stable official identifier, then the company name with contextual attributes. A name-only match is a candidate, not a confirmed identity. Compare jurisdiction, legal form or suffix where available, and source-record details before accepting a result.

Business listings are useful for public-facing locations, but listing searches can return multiple candidates. Google Business Profile lets verified owners provide or edit address and contact details associated with a listing. Google’s matching guidance notes that multiple businesses may match and result quality depends on input accuracy and geography. Review ambiguous results rather than treating a listing match as conclusive. See Google Business Profile guidance and Google place matching guidance.

These checks complement one another but do not collapse into one universal verification result. Preserve the result and its source for each check independently.

Implementation decisions that affect quality

Coverage, licensing, and access

Before selecting a provider, check country and registry coverage, address fields, update cadence, API quotas, pricing, licensing, and permitted reuse for your intended application. Coverage and legal obligations vary; a cross-jurisdiction workflow cannot substitute for reviewing the relevant local register and rules. Do not assume that access to an API means unrestricted commercial reuse.

Confidence and review policy

Define review triggers based on your own risk tolerance, rather than inventing a universal confidence threshold. Common triggers include conflicting addresses, multiple similar entities, no registration identifier, a mismatch between company jurisdiction and returned record, or uncertain listing matches. For low-risk tasks, an address may be acceptable with a recorded source and caveat; onboarding, compliance, or legal workflows may require stronger registry confirmation and human review.

Data freshness and auditability

Record when each source was queried and retain the source URL and entity identifier. If the workflow depends on a current operating location, schedule refreshes appropriate to the business need and source update patterns. Keep old values or change history where appropriate, rather than overwriting the only evidence of what was previously found.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Practical fix
The returned company has the right name but wrong location Name-only matching found a different entity Re-run with jurisdiction or registration number and inspect the linked registry source.
Several plausible business listings appear Common name, sparse input, or regional ambiguity Use additional context and route unresolved candidates to human review.
A validated address looks correct but belongs to the wrong company Address validation was mistaken for entity matching Confirm the legal entity and address ownership from a registry or traceable source; keep validation as a separate signal.
A map pin appears, but postal components are incomplete Geocoding returned coordinates without validating the address components Use address validation for component checks and retain the original input.
The registered address is not useful for delivery or customer visits The workflow returned the legal registered office, not an operating or postal address Keep the registered-office label and find a separately sourced customer-facing or mailing address.
An API lookup is unavailable or rate-limited Account access, plan limits, or provider terms Check the provider’s current key, plan, limits, and permitted usage; avoid assuming coverage or quota that is not documented for your account.

Or skip the browser setup

For workflows that need to capture a company’s website as supporting context, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API; it does not replace a registry lookup or prove an address belongs to a company. Its cookie-consent handling accepts banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step switchable. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents, and the plans include 1,000 shots per month free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The same endpoint can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF page settings, HTML/CSS rendering, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait controls, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies and authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture, usage API, and OpenAPI spec. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an address validation API find a company’s address?

No. It checks or standardizes an address you supply; it does not establish which company owns it.

Can a map pin confirm a company’s registered address?

No. Geocoding supplies coordinates and is not proof of legal-entity identity or address correctness.

Is there a single refresh schedule for discovered addresses?

No universal interval is established; set refresh timing according to the use case and the source’s update patterns.
