For most people, automatic phone updates are the safer, more convenient default because they reduce the chance of forgetting security fixes. Keep update notifications on and check your phone’s update status from time to time. Choose manual installation if you need control over restart timing, but install security updates promptly rather than leaving them pending.

These are practical trade-offs, not results from a controlled comparison. Apple, Google, and CISA describe update mechanics and security guidance, but the cited sources do not quantify which mode produces better outcomes for every user.
Why automatic updates are the better default for most people
Security updates matter most when they are installed promptly. CISA recommends installing updates promptly, especially critical ones, and enabling automatic updates where available (CISA: Update Software). Automatic installation helps avoid relying on memory for each update. It is not a guarantee that every patch will install immediately: availability, device requirements, and platform schedules still apply.
“Automatic” can mean automatic downloading, automatic installation, or both. On iPhone, Apple offers separate controls, so you can have an update downloaded automatically and choose when to install it yourself.

How iPhone updates work
Apple says an iPhone with automatic installation enabled downloads and installs available updates overnight while connected to Wi-Fi and charging. The phone notifies you before installation. You can also enable automatic downloads without automatic installation, or check and install an update yourself at Settings > General > Software Update (Apple Support: Update your iPhone or iPad).
Apple’s deployment documentation says that, when automatic updates are enabled and an update is prepared, installation is scheduled for a suitable time selected using on-device machine learning, subject to system requirements; the device may ask you to authorize the update (Apple: Review the Apple software update process). That describes Apple’s update process, not a promise that an update will install at a particular hour.

How Android updates work
Google says most Android system updates and security patches install automatically, but timing varies by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Many devices activate a downloaded update after a restart. To check your Android version, security update, and Google Play system update, use the update controls described in Google’s Android update instructions. Exact menu names can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Android Enterprise devices can have administrator-managed policies, such as automatic installation, a daily installation window, or postponement. Those policies can cause a reboot. Google also notes that Google Play system updates are installed at a later reboot initiated by a user, administrator, or policy (Google: System updates on devices enrolled using Android Enterprise). These managed-device controls should not be assumed to exist on every consumer Android phone.

Choose the update mode that fits your routine
Use automatic installation if you want less upkeep
This is the sensible default if you are comfortable with the phone handling routine updates and a restart at a suitable time. Leave notifications enabled so you can see when an update is pending or needs attention.
Use automatic downloads with manual installation if timing matters
On iPhone, this option keeps the update ready while letting you choose when to begin installation. It can suit someone who needs to avoid an unexpected restart during work, travel, or another time-sensitive task.

Use fully manual checks only if you will act on them
Check regularly and install security updates promptly. A calendar reminder is a practical way to prompt a check, but it does not replace installing updates when they are available. Manual control becomes a poor trade-off if “later” turns into a long delay.
Follow your organization’s policy on a work-managed phone
An employer’s device-management settings may schedule updates, require installation, or limit postponement. Follow that policy rather than trying to override a managed update schedule.

Install with less disruption
- Check the update information and follow the instructions shown on your phone.
- For Android, Google’s general guidance recommends using Wi-Fi and having at least 75% battery charge before updating; requirements and settings vary across devices.
- For iPhone automatic installation, the phone schedules installation overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and Apple says it notifies you beforehand.
- Allow time for installation and a restart. Do not start an update just before you need the phone immediately.
- If a phone appears unsupported or has gone a long time without updates, check support information for its specific model. Android update schedules vary, and older devices may not support newer Android versions.
