To automate Windows updates, first decide whether you need a managed-device schedule or a script that searches for and installs updates. Use Windows Update policy for centrally managed timing and restart rules; use the Windows Update Agent (WUA) API or the separate PSWindowsUpdate Gallery module when a script must perform update operations. These approaches differ in update history, restart handling, and package trust.

Choose the right automation method

Before changing settings or running a script, identify the Windows version and edition, PowerShell version, whether the device is organization-managed, whether WSUS or another update policy is configured, and whether an unattended restart is acceptable. A local change may not override domain or device-management policy. Microsoft documents the relevant Group Policy controls for Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported Windows Server releases, but exact behavior depends on the configuration.

Approach Use it when Important considerations
Windows Update policy / Group Policy You manage devices and need a defined download, installation, or restart schedule. Native administrative controls; policy options vary by version and scenario. Scheduled installation can restart a device. Review Microsoft’s WSUS Group Policy guidance and restart policy guidance.
Windows Update Agent (WUA) API A script or management tool needs to search, download, install, or uninstall updates programmatically. Microsoft documents access to Windows Update and WSUS through this COM API. WUA-installed updates do not appear in the Settings update history. Microsoft also warns of possible orchestrator conflicts; changing orchestrator behavior is an operational decision.
PSWindowsUpdate Gallery module You want higher-level PowerShell cmdlets and your organization approves an external package dependency. This is separate from Microsoft’s WindowsUpdate module reference. Inspect and approve package contents, version, source, and maintainer before use; verify compatibility and current syntax locally.

Microsoft describes WUA as a way for administrators to determine applicable updates, download them, and install them “with little or no user intervention.” That capability does not remove the need to decide which updates are appropriate or when a device may restart.

Schedule managed devices with Group Policy

For a fleet where the goal is a consistent installation schedule, configure policy rather than creating a script that duplicates the update client’s scheduling job.

  1. Open the Group Policy editor used to manage the target computers.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
  3. Open Configure Automatic Updates and choose settings appropriate to the organization. Microsoft’s policy article describes option 4 as automatic download and scheduled installation.
  4. Set a schedule that matches the maintenance window. The cited Microsoft guidance says the default scheduled time is 3:00 AM when no schedule is specified.
  5. Review restart, notification, active-hours, and deadline policies together. A scheduled install that requires a restart can restart automatically, with behavior affected by policy and whether a user is signed in.

For commercial or education devices, Microsoft’s device restart guidance discusses active hours and deadlines. Critical equipment may need staged validation and delayed rollout; automatic updating may not fit every critical-device scenario. Establish a maintenance window and an accountable restart policy before enabling unattended installation.

Use a PowerShell script for update operations

If you need a script to query or install updates, choose between the Microsoft-documented WUA API and the separate PSWindowsUpdate package. WUA is a COM API and requires more implementation work. The Microsoft WindowsUpdate module reference surfaced here covers Get-WindowsUpdateLog, which merges ETL files into a readable log; it is not the same thing as PSWindowsUpdate’s update-management cmdlets.

Review the PSWindowsUpdate package before installing

The PowerShell Gallery listing for PSWindowsUpdate showed version 2.2.1.5, minimum PowerShell 5.1.0.0, and a last-published date of July 20, 2024. These are listing details, not a guarantee that the version is current or suitable for every environment. Microsoft’s PowerShell Gallery guidance says package metadata is author-provided, not Microsoft-verified, and recommends inspecting package contents before installation.

Use an approved package source and review the current owner, version, code, and organizational approval. For example, the following commands find and save the package for inspection; install only after review and approval:

Make update selection reviewable

Design the workflow to identify its target device and candidate updates before installation. Review what would be installed and the restart consequences, then proceed under an approved maintenance process. Do not copy cmdlet parameters from an unverified example: check the documentation that matches the module version installed in your environment. For native WUA code, account for its COM implementation and the fact that it can search, download, and install with little or no user interaction.

Plan restarts, orchestration, and logging

Decide restart rules before unattended runs

Policy-based installs and scripted installs can both create pending restarts. For servers, shared workstations, kiosks, lab systems, and industrial or other critical endpoints, define maintenance windows, approval waves, recovery plans, and who owns the restart decision. Use active hours where appropriate and stage changes on critical devices before broad deployment.

Understand WUA history and orchestrator interaction

Updates installed through WUA APIs do not appear in the Windows Settings update page history. Microsoft recommends disabling the Windows Update orchestrator when using WUA APIs to prevent conflicts. That is not a casual toggle: it changes the normal orchestration workflow and should be assessed against the device’s management design before implementation. Microsoft says WUA update events can be inspected in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System, filtered to the WindowsUpdateClient source.

Schedule scripts as a separate layer

Task Scheduler can run a script on a cadence, but that schedule is distinct from Windows Update policy. Specify the run identity and privileges, trigger, network availability requirements, log location, failure notification, and handling of pending restart state. Confirm task settings and cmdlet syntax against current documentation for the actual Windows, PowerShell, and module versions in use.

Follow PowerShell execution controls

Do not use a blanket execution-policy bypass as a shortcut. Microsoft’s execution policy documentation explains that Group Policy settings can control script execution and take precedence over PowerShell scope settings; with RemoteSigned, unsigned downloaded scripts are blocked. Follow your organization’s signing and policy requirements, and inspect downloaded scripts before running them.
