Build the destination URL with JavaScript’s URL and searchParams, then pass that complete URL to Playwright’s page.goto(). This keeps parameter encoding separate from browser navigation and makes it easier to wait for the page state your automation actually needs.
Build the URL, then navigate to it
Use an absolute URL with a scheme such as https://. URLSearchParams.set() adds a parameter or replaces its existing value; use append() when the destination expects repeated keys. The receiving site decides what repeated values mean. Playwright documents navigation through page.goto() and supports using a configured baseURL with a path when creating a URL. Playwright Page API

Wait for the page state your task needs
A navigation event does not necessarily mean a web app has finished rendering the result you need. page.goto() supports navigation conditions including load, domcontentloaded, networkidle, and commit. Playwright discourages using networkidle as a general test-readiness signal; prefer an assertion or wait for a specific element, state, or result tied to the next action. Playwright Page API

Use page navigation for websites, request parameters for APIs
page.goto(url) opens a browser page, allowing page JavaScript to run and enabling DOM interaction. For an HTTP endpoint where you need a response rather than a rendered page, Playwright’s APIRequestContext.get() accepts parameters that are serialized into the query string. Its params option accepts an object, URLSearchParams, or a query string. Playwright APIRequestContext API

Know which headless Chromium you launched
Playwright’s BrowserType API documents headless mode as the default. When no channel is specified, its Chromium setup uses a separate headless shell by default; setting channel: 'chromium' opts into its newer Chromium headless mode. Installed branded Chrome or Edge can use a newer headless implementation and may not behave identically to the shell. Playwright BrowserType API Playwright browser documentation

The Playwright browser guide quotes Chrome documentation describing the newer headless implementation as “the real Chrome browser”; that is a qualitative description, not a measured guarantee that every site will behave the same.
Check response status and handle special cases
A completed navigation can still lead to an HTTP error page. Playwright’s page.goto() does not throw solely because the server responds with a status such as 404 or 500, so inspect the returned response when status matters. The API also notes that headless mode does not support navigating to a PDF document. Playwright Page API

A query parameter can signal a special rendering path, but adding it does not change a site by itself. The page’s own code must read and act on that value. For example, Chrome Developers describes a server-rendering pattern that adds a headless parameter and has application code check whether the current URL contains it. If a prerendered page and a later visitor page both send analytics events, pageview counts may be affected. Treat analytics and request handling as part of the application design; the older Chrome Developers example should not be copied as a current guide to interception APIs.
Keep automation isolated from your personal browser profile
Use browser state dedicated to automation rather than pointing Playwright at your everyday Chrome profile. Playwright’s BrowserType documentation warns that changes to Chrome’s policy mean automating the default Chrome user profile is unsupported and recommends a separate directory for automation.
