To photograph an aurora, combine a clear, dark viewing site with a stable camera or phone and an exposure adjusted to the aurora’s brightness and movement. To know when to go, use NOAA’s three-day geomagnetic forecast for planning, then check its short-term aurora map, local clouds and the sky itself as the event approaches. Solar activity can make auroras more likely, but a solar flare announcement or high Kp value alone cannot tell you that the lights will be visible from your location.

How does solar activity create an aurora?

Auroras happen when energy from the solar wind enters Earth’s magnetosphere and accelerates electrons. Those electrons excite atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, which emit the visible light. The solar-wind electrons do not simply travel in a straight line from the Sun and paint the sky; Earth’s magnetic environment is part of the process.

Two important sources of enhanced solar-wind conditions are coronal mass ejections (CMEs)—large eruptions of solar material—and high-speed streams from coronal holes. Whether a disturbance produces a strong geomagnetic response depends in part on the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field. A southward-directed field favors energy transfer into Earth’s magnetosphere. That orientation can be difficult to know in advance: NOAA notes that coronagraph images cannot reveal a CME’s internal magnetic-field direction.

This is why a dramatic solar flare headline is not a local aurora forecast. A flare is a burst of radiation; it does not by itself establish that an Earth-directed CME will arrive with the conditions needed for a visible display over your town. An event’s path, timing and magnetic orientation all matter. NOAA’s aurora tutorial explains the connection between solar wind, Earth’s magnetic field and auroral activity.

Which aurora forecast should you check before a trip?

Use different NOAA products for different time horizons: the three-day geomagnetic forecast for broad planning, the OVATION aurora map as an event approaches, and measured alerts as evidence that a threshold has already been reached. None replaces a local cloud forecast or a look at the sky.

Source or product What it tells you Best use Important limitation
NOAA three-day geomagnetic forecast Predicted geomagnetic conditions and three-hourly Kp estimates Deciding which nights may be worth keeping open Timing and strength are uncertain, especially farther ahead
NOAA OVATION aurora map Forecast position of the auroral oval in both hemispheres Checking whether the oval is near your region as the event approaches NOAA describes it as a 30–90-minute forecast; it is not a guarantee for a particular site
NOAA warning An upstream measurement indicates storm conditions are approaching Responding to a disturbance before it reaches Earth Arrival time and local visibility still depend on conditions
NOAA alert A measured threshold has already been reached at Earth Confirming that a specified storm threshold is occurring It reports a threshold, not whether your sky is clear or the aurora is visible overhead

NOAA’s aurora forecast page describes OVATION as providing 30–90 minutes of forecast lead time. NOAA’s tutorial separately describes an approximately 15–45-minute useful window for upstream observations. Those are distinct descriptions, not interchangeable guarantees. If OVATION has to substitute Kp because solar-wind input is unavailable, NOAA says the map has no forecast lead time.

A geomagnetic watch can cover as far as the third forecast day, but a watch based on forecast conditions has less confidence in its timing and strength than a warning informed by upstream measurements. A warning signals that observations upstream indicate a disturbance is coming. An alert is different: NOAA describes a geomagnetic storm alert as based on ground magnetometer observations and indicative of a specific storm threshold already being reached. NOAA lists email notification through its subscription services.

What does Kp tell you—and what can’t it tell you?

Kp is a planetary measure of geomagnetic disturbance on a 0–9 scale. Higher values broadly suggest that the auroral oval may extend farther from the poles, but Kp is not a precise countdown or a guarantee of visibility from an individual location.

NOAA associates Kp 5 with a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm, Kp 6 with G2 (moderate), Kp 7 with G3 (strong), Kp 8 with G4 (severe), and Kp 9 with G5 (extreme). The NOAA planetary K-index page provides the index and its storm-scale context.

Because Kp summarizes planetary activity, local conditions can differ from the global picture. A high Kp does not promise that the aurora will be visible through clouds, city glare or terrain; a lower Kp does not rule out a rewarding display beneath a high-latitude oval. Local substorms can also make activity over one region stronger or more dynamic than a planetary index suggests. NASA cautions against treating Kp as a real-time event countdown, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks explains why local cameras and magnetometers can add useful context.

Use Kp as one planning signal, not as a go/no-go number. Pair it with the oval’s location and time, local cloud cover, darkness, access and the view toward the pole. For northern mid-latitude viewers, a clear northern horizon can matter even when the oval is not directly overhead. Southern Hemisphere observers should use NOAA’s southern-hemisphere view rather than assuming the northern map applies.

How do you turn a forecast into a safe viewing plan?

Start early enough to choose a destination, but make the final decision using short-term information. Conditions can change as the solar wind is measured closer to Earth, and a promising space-weather forecast is only useful if you can safely reach a dark, clear site.

  1. Several days ahead, check the three-day forecast. Review the geomagnetic forecast and predicted three-hourly Kp to identify possible active nights. Treat a forecast watch as a heads-up, not a precise appointment.
  2. As the date approaches, revisit NOAA’s notifications and OVATION map. Check whether a warning or alert has been issued and whether the oval is forecast near your latitude. Confirm the map’s UTC timestamp and convert it to your local time before interpreting its nighttime side.
  3. Check the site, not just the space weather. Look at a local cloud forecast, darkness, light pollution, road and parking access, and whether buildings, trees or hills block the poleward horizon. A predicted oval does not clear the clouds or make an unsafe pull-off safe.
  4. At the location, compare forecast with observation. Look for the actual glow and changing curtains, and use local all-sky cameras or magnetometers if available. These can help provide local context that a planetary Kp value cannot.
  5. Keep checking rather than relying on one screenshot. A map or forecast is time-stamped information. Recheck it before leaving and while conditions allow; avoid checking a screen while driving.

NOAA notes that roughly 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. local time is commonly favorable for viewing, but it is not a fixed schedule. The useful window depends on the event, location, darkness and weather. NOAA’s aurora viewing tips also emphasize practical sky conditions. The best forecast cannot compensate for a cloud deck, bright surroundings, a blocked horizon or a hazardous location.

How do you photograph auroras with a camera?

A sturdy tripod, a wide-angle lens that fits your camera, and manual exposure control are a practical starting point. There is no one setting that works for every display: shorten the exposure when bright curtains move quickly, and consider a longer one when the aurora is faint and relatively still.

  1. Stabilize the camera. Mount it on a sturdy tripod and use a cable release if appropriate to reduce movement from pressing the shutter. If the camera offers a timer, that can also reduce handling shake.
  2. Choose a wide, fast lens. A lens with a wide field of view can include the structure of the aurora and some landscape. Nikon’s guide recommends fast lenses such as f/1.8 or f/2.8; choose one compatible with your camera, rather than assuming a named lens fits every system.
  3. Focus on a distant subject and verify it. Do not assume the lens’s infinity mark gives sharp stars. Focus on a distant light or other suitable target, take a frame, and zoom in on the image to check sharpness.
  4. Make a test exposure and adjust. Nikon publishes one aurora example made at 6 seconds, f/2.8 and ISO 3200. Treat it as a reference frame, not a universal recipe. A bright or rapidly moving curtain may need a shorter shutter time to retain detail; a dimmer, slower glow may benefit from a longer exposure to collect more light.
  5. Inspect the image and histogram. Check focus, motion and exposure after each adjustment. Watch the RGB histogram so the green channel does not clip and lose highlight detail.
  6. Recompose as the scene changes. A moonlit foreground, nearby subject or available ambient light can change the exposure and focus needs. Include a foreground silhouette or landscape when it adds a sense of place, but do not let composition distract from safe footing or a clear view of the sky.

Longer exposures collect more light, but the aurora keeps moving while the sensor records it. The result may show a faint glow more clearly while softening the edges of fast-moving curtains. A shorter exposure can preserve their shape but may leave a weak display dark. Nikon quotes photographer Tom Bol: “Remember, the eye sees in real time; the sensor captures over time.” In practice, make a test, inspect it, and adapt to the motion you see rather than leaving one exposure fixed for the whole night.

For packing, NASA recommends a tripod, warm layers, backup camera batteries or phone power, and a red headlight. Cold can drain batteries quickly, so keep spares warm and accessible. Scout a safe parking place before the outing and avoid setting up where you obstruct traffic or stand near an unsafe road edge.

How do you photograph the northern lights with a phone?

A phone can record an aurora if it can remain still and offers a sufficiently long exposure or night mode. Secure it on a phone-compatible tripod or another stable support, use manual exposure controls if the phone provides them, and adjust from a first frame rather than expecting every model to share the same settings.

NASA’s smartphone guide suggests an initial exposure near 10 seconds at ISO 800, followed by adjustment. That is a starting point from the guide, not a setting available on every current phone or a promise of a sharp image. The guide includes older devices, so rely on its adjustable-exposure technique rather than assuming its named apps, camera controls or specific device instructions still apply.

If your phone has no manual controls, use its night mode or long-exposure option if available, then keep the device completely steady for the capture. Avoid digital zoom where possible; frame the scene before exposing, and take several images to compare focus and movement. If the display is changing quickly, a phone’s automatic long exposure may blur it. A shorter capture may preserve more structure but can appear darker. The same trade-off applies as with a dedicated camera: the sky’s motion and the phone’s exposure time shape the result.

A phone tripod mount is useful only if it securely fits both the phone and the support; a purchased mount or app is not a prerequisite. A stable existing phone and a safe place to set it can be enough to begin.

How should you choose between a phone and a camera?

Choose the device that lets you hold a stable composition and control exposure well enough for the display you encounter. An interchangeable-lens camera offers more flexibility over lens choice and exposure; a phone is convenient and can work well when it has a steady support and suitable night or manual controls.

Choice What it offers What to watch for
Phone Convenience, a camera already on hand, and night or manual controls on some models Controls and long-exposure behavior differ by model; movement can blur during a long capture
Camera with compatible wide-angle lens More control over shutter, aperture, ISO and field of view Lens compatibility, focusing and setup take attention; a tripod is important for long exposures

Neither device creates an aurora or guarantees a visible result. If you are new to night photography, the sensible first step is to stabilize the equipment you already have and learn how its night or manual exposure controls behave. More gear can add control, but it cannot fix clouds, light pollution, poor focus or a blocked horizon.

What should you do when the forecast and the sky disagree?

Trust the conditions at your site over an old forecast image, and diagnose the mismatch before changing plans. An aurora forecast indicates modeled or measured geomagnetic conditions; it does not report cloud cover, local obstructions or exactly what a person can see from one field.

  • High Kp, no visible aurora: Check cloud cover, sky brightness, the oval’s position and whether you are facing a clear poleward horizon. High Kp means broader potential reach, not guaranteed visibility.
  • Low Kp, visible activity: A good display can still occur beneath an oval near high latitudes, and local activity may differ from the global index. Do not treat a low planetary number as proof that nothing is happening overhead.
  • OVATION looks promising, but the forecast is stale: Read the timestamp and whether the map has usable solar-wind input. If NOAA has substituted Kp, the map has no forecast lead time.
  • A warning or alert appears: Read what kind of notice it is. A warning concerns upstream measurements and an approaching disturbance; an alert indicates a measured threshold has already been reached at Earth. Neither guarantees clear skies at your location.
  • The camera image looks unlike the scene: Compare the exposure time with the aurora’s movement, check focus at magnification, and inspect the RGB histogram for clipping. The camera integrates light over the exposure, so a photo can show color or structure differently from what the eye perceives in real time.

Space-weather forecasts are inherently conditional because the solar wind’s properties, particularly magnetic orientation, affect how much energy enters the magnetosphere. Rechecking as the disturbance approaches is more useful than treating an early forecast as a promise.

What is the simplest reliable plan?

Use the three-day forecast to pick a possible night, the short-term map and notifications to refine timing, and local weather and direct observation to decide whether to go. At the site, prioritize a safe, dark location with a clear poleward horizon. Start with a tripod and the phone or camera you already own, make a test exposure, and change shutter time to suit the aurora’s actual brightness and movement.

NOAA’s live products are guides to changing conditions, not guarantees. Recheck the watches, warnings, aurora map, solar-wind observations and local clouds immediately before traveling; a good plan leaves room for uncertainty and never requires unsafe driving or access.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I track a CME that could cause auroras?

Follow NOAA’s space-weather notifications and upstream observations rather than relying on a flare headline alone. Coronagraph images can show an eruption’s outward motion, but they cannot establish its internal magnetic-field direction in advance, one reason a CME’s eventual geomagnetic impact can remain uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I see auroras from a city?

Possibly, if activity is strong and the sky is clear, but artificial skyglow makes faint displays and subtle structure harder to see. A darker site with an unobstructed horizon improves your view; it does not change whether geomagnetic activity is occurring.

Why does my aurora photo look brighter or greener than the sky did?

A camera records light over the full exposure, while your eyes perceive the scene continuously, so the image can reveal color or faint structure that was difficult to notice in real time. Exposure length, sensor response and processing also affect how color appears.

Do I need a special aurora app to plan a viewing night?

No. NOAA provides forecasts, maps and notification options through its own space-weather pages. A third-party app is optional; check timestamps and the source of any alert before making a travel decision.
