Is the original Mini a fit for your space and plants?
The Mini is a countertop indoor garden intended for herbs and other plants. Its dimensions, according to Auk’s May 6, 2026 help-center specifications, are 45 × 21 × 35 cm (17.8 × 8.3 × 14 in); with longer rods, listed height rises to 50 cm (20 in). Actual electricity cost depends on your local rate; multiply 6 kWh by the price per kWh on your bill for a rough monthly energy estimate.
The included coco fiber is not an unlimited growing medium. Auk says crops in it typically last 4–10 months, depending on the plant, and recommends fresh coco fiber for new crops. Mini 1 vs. Mini 2: what the extra reported price buys
WIRED reported the Mini 2 at $239 on October 6, 2026, $40 more than the reported $199 Mini 1 clearance price. Both prices are time-sensitive, and the Mini 2 price should also be checked with Auk. Auk markets the Mini 2 as providing 20% more growth and 25% more water. Those are manufacturer claims, not results from an independent matched comparison. Which generation should you choose?
Choose the Mini 1 if the reported discount is live
The Mini 1 is the lower-cost option if you mainly want to grow herbs such as basil and parsley and its four-pot starter setup meets your needs. Its listed footprint and reservoir are useful planning figures, but leave space for the light bar and any taller rods your chosen plants require. The $40 gap versus the reported Mini 2 price is not a current savings guarantee.
Consider the Mini 2 for its newer controls and modes
The Mini 2 is the more relevant comparison if you value optional app controls, a slow mode, its redesigned light system, or a larger reservoir. Its listed dimensions are narrower and shorter in length than the Mini 1, but 2 cm taller with included rods. That difference may matter on a crowded counter or beneath a cabinet.
