An audio amplifier with tone control can mean either a tone-adjusting preamp that feeds a separate speaker amplifier or an integrated board that combines tone processing and speaker-driving power. Check which role a device serves before buying: bass and treble controls do not, by themselves, mean it can drive speakers.
What tone control does—and what it does not
Tone controls change an audio system’s frequency balance, usually by adjusting bass and treble. They can help compensate for speakers and their enclosures, the listening room, or personal preference. Texas Instruments describes those purposes in its Audio Tone Control Using the TLC074 Operational Amplifier.
A tone-control preamp processes a signal; it is not necessarily a power amplifier. A preamp or tone module may need a separate power stage to drive speakers. An integrated amplifier board, by contrast, may include both signal processing and speaker-driving output, but verify the specific board’s electrical specifications and intended load.
How a Baxandall-style tone-control circuit works
Texas Instruments’ application report describes an active variation of the Baxandall negative-feedback tone-control circuit. Its example provides bass and treble cut, a flat setting, and boost. The tone-control components sit in the operational amplifier’s feedback loop.

For the circuit described in that report, TI says the active design has much lower total harmonic distortion, little or no insertion loss, and a more symmetrical boost-and-cut response than most passive tone-control designs. These are comparisons scoped to the report; they are not guarantees about every active circuit or a claim that one circuit will sound better in every system.
TI’s example uses one bass and one treble control shared by both channels, and reports 6 dB gain at maximum volume when both tone controls are at their midpoints. Those details apply to that particular design, not to Baxandall circuits generally.

- Channel count: Match stereo or mono hardware to the signal path. A mono module does not provide independent left and right channels.
- Signal levels and connections: Check that the source output suits the device input and that the device output suits the next component.
- Power supply: Confirm the required supply range and arrangement in the device’s current documentation.
- Load and output power: For a speaker-driving board, check its specified load and power output against the speakers and intended use.

Which type should you choose?
- Choose a stereo tone-control preamp when you already have, or plan to add, a separate power amplifier and want familiar bass and treble controls.
- Consider a DSP amplifier board when you want processing and speaker-driving amplification on one board and are prepared to check its configuration and electrical requirements.
- Use a mono tone module only where a mono signal path and its documented compatibility fit your setup.
- Choose a guitar preamp module for a suitable guitar-amplifier system, not as a substitute for a general-purpose stereo hi-fi component.
TI’s report is a legacy source for circuit principles. For a new build, check current datasheets for the selected components and verify the complete circuit against your supply, signal levels, and load.
