Yes. An attacker can put instructions in an email that are hard for a person to see but that an AI assistant may process. If the assistant treats those instructions as trustworthy, they could steer its summary, expose information, or trigger an unwanted action. Microsoft has documented both email prompt-injection risks and a phishing campaign that used invisible Unicode to evade filters; that campaign is not evidence that attackers successfully hijacked AI email agents.

What is prompt injection in an email?

Prompt injection is an attempt to manipulate an AI by placing malicious instructions in content it processes. When the instructions arrive in external material—such as an email, webpage, or document—the attack is indirect: the attacker may be targeting an assistant that later reads the material on a user’s behalf, rather than addressing the assistant directly.

That differs from ordinary phishing, which primarily tries to manipulate a person into acting. An email can target both the human recipient and an AI assistant that processes the message. OpenAI describes prompt injection as a form of social engineering aimed at conversational AI; Microsoft’s email guidance describes messages that try to trick the language model reading them for a user.

How can an email hide instructions from a person?

One method uses invisible Unicode tag characters in the range U+E0000 to U+E007F. They may not appear in typical fonts or interfaces, while software processing the underlying message can still receive them. Microsoft says an AI ingesting the raw text may decode characters that a person does not see. The same technique can also make keywords harder for email filters to parse.

Invisible Unicode is not the only possible concealment method. Microsoft’s email-protection documentation also describes hidden, invisible, or off-screen text; HTML markup and styling; quoted or forwarded thread content; and encoded or obfuscated segments. A message’s visible body may therefore not show everything a system analyzing the message processes.

What did Microsoft report attackers doing?

In a September 3, 2026 report, Microsoft Security Research described a high-volume phishing campaign that used invisible Unicode characters to split financial lure words such as “funding,” making them harder for email filters to parse. Microsoft characterized this as an inversion of the familiar prompt-injection use of invisible text: the characters were used to evade filtering, not to demonstrate that an AI assistant had been successfully manipulated.

The distinction matters. The report documents a real filtering-evasion technique, but it does not establish that this campaign stole mailbox data through an AI agent or caused successful AI-based compromises.

What could happen if an assistant follows an email’s instructions?

Microsoft lists possible risks including disclosure of sensitive mailbox content, marking a malicious message as safe, producing a misleading summary, or taking an unwanted action in an automated workflow. These are conditional outcomes, not automatic effects of receiving a hidden instruction. The result depends on whether the assistant follows it, what information and tools the assistant can access, and what safeguards are in place.

OpenAI has described a security demonstration in which an email encountered during an inbox task redirected an agent toward sending a resignation email instead of completing the requested out-of-office task. This illustrates a possible failure mode; it is not a report of a real-world victim incident.

The consequences can be more serious when an assistant has broad access to private information or permission to send messages, edit files, or use connected tools. The same malicious email presents a different level of risk to a read-only summarizer than to an agent authorized to take consequential actions.

What do the published measurements show?

Google Threat Intelligence reported a 32% relative increase in detections in a malicious category when comparing November 2025 with February 2026 in repeated scans of public-web Common Crawl archives. Google said the scans did not capture major social media sites and described the observed attempts as low in sophistication.

That figure measures a change in detections within a particular public-web dataset. It is not a count of successful email compromises, an estimate of how prevalent email-based prompt injection is, or proof that every detected attempt worked. The cited sources do not provide a representative statistic for the number or share of organizations experiencing successful email-based prompt-injection compromises.

How do the defenses fit together?

No single layer is established as a complete defense. The controls below act at different points: email delivery, the AI’s runtime, and the moment a person approves a consequential action.

Layer What it does Scope and limitation
Email delivery Microsoft says Defender for Office 365 evaluates inbound messages in its filtering pipeline, including hidden text, HTML, quoted or forwarded content, and normalized encoded material. Its detection uses signals such as sender reputation, evasion techniques, broader context, and instruction intent. Microsoft documents a focus on instructions to exfiltrate data through a URL, reveal system prompts or configuration, or discover available tools. It is not intended to block every instruction-like phrase or serve as a general-purpose prompt-injection benchmark. A basic test prompt may not trigger a detection, and a business request can be difficult to classify without the AI’s runtime context.
AI runtime Microsoft describes safeguards including input filtering, separation of user content from system instructions, grounding boundaries, and output filtering. Mail filtering is an earlier layer, not a replacement for safeguards where the AI runs. Microsoft notes that runtime defenses matter because risk depends in part on an assistant’s current permissions, tools, and grounded data.
Access and workflow OpenAI advises limiting an agent to the access needed for a task, using specific instructions, and carefully checking proposed actions before confirmation. CIS recommends human approval before AI executes code or makes high-impact changes, limiting access to sensitive systems and data, keeping inventories of accessible data, systems, and tools, and training staff about prompt-injection risk. These controls limit exposure or constrain impact; they do not establish that an assistant cannot be manipulated.

What should organizations and users do?

  • Give an assistant a narrow task. Prefer a specific request over broad authorization such as “review my emails and take whatever action is needed.”
  • Limit its permissions. Grant only the mailbox, data, and connected tools the task requires; avoid giving a summarization task authority to send messages or alter files unless necessary.
  • Require review for consequential actions. Check a proposed email, code execution, file change, or other high-impact step before confirming it.
  • Use controls at more than one layer. Email filtering can help identify risky messages, while runtime safeguards and restricted tool access help reduce the chance and impact of a failure.
  • Set expectations about detection. A filter’s documented coverage is not a guarantee that every malicious instruction will be identified. Vendor descriptions of product features are not independent evaluations of their effectiveness.
