There is no universal winner: water output per unit of electricity depends heavily on air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, and the specific machine. A year-long field study in Tempe, Arizona, found a compressor dehumidifier collected more than twice as much water as a desiccant unit under warmer, more humid conditions; the desiccant system did better under cooler, drier conditions. That study did not compare a named household atmospheric water generator (AWG) with a household dehumidifier, so it cannot establish a general winner between those products.
How to compare water output with electricity use
Use liters per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh) to show water produced for the electricity consumed, or kilowatt-hours per liter (kWh/L) to show the energy required for a liter. The two metrics are reciprocals: a higher L/kWh or lower kWh/L indicates better energy efficiency.
Those figures are meaningful only alongside the operating conditions. Record air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and dew point where available, as well as the device and test duration. A daily output rating measured in warm, humid air cannot be fairly compared with one measured in cooler, drier air. The EPA notes that AWG production depends strongly on humidity and air temperature (EPA’s 2019 evaluation).
How an AWG and a dehumidifier collect water
Many refrigeration-based AWGs and household dehumidifiers use the same basic condensation process: a cooling coil brings air below its dew point, moisture condenses, and the liquid is collected. The device categories are not identical, however. An AWG is built to collect and condition water; an ordinary dehumidifier is built to remove moisture from indoor air.

The water tank is made of Food-grade PP (Polypropylene). Say goodbye to plastic bottles and reduce your carbon footprint. Help reduce the humidity level in the room.
- ✅ [Easy and Convenient] - Can also be connected to solar pannels (paired with a power station or battery bank), makes it a perfect water source for homes, RVs, trailers, boats, off-grid or emergencies during natural disasters.
Some AWGs add water-treatment stages. In its evaluation of a Watergen GEN-350, the EPA described recirculation through sediment and carbon filters and UV disinfection, followed by mineralization and polish filtration. Those features belong to that evaluated unit; they should not be assumed for every AWG. Dehumidifiers also differ: compressor and desiccant systems use different collection approaches and can perform differently across conditions.
What the available performance figures show
Compressor versus desiccant in a year-long field study
A year-long outdoor study in semi-arid Tempe, Arizona, compared electric-powered compressor and desiccant dehumidifiers. When average run-cycle RH was above 30%, temperature above 20 °C, and dew point above 5 °C, the compressor system harvested more than twice as much water. When average RH was below 30%, temperature below 20 °C, and dew point below 5 °C, the desiccant system performed more favorably. These are conditional findings from that deployment, not a universal product ranking or a direct AWG-versus-dehumidifier test (study abstract indexed by PubMed).

A reported AWG energy-use figure
A 2022 study testing an AWG under hot, humid climate conditions reported annual-average energy use of 2.25 kWh/L for its tested device and setup. This is a device- and study-specific result, not a typical value for all AWGs or a direct comparison against a dehumidifier measured in the same conditions (study in Case Studies in Chemical and Environmental Engineering).
Modeled U.S. output is not a household guarantee
A 2023 PLOS Water study modeled three AWGs using U.S. historical weather data from 1985–2019 and found strong geographic and seasonal variation. Under its model and device assumptions, production was minimally viable across a large portion of the United States. The authors’ analysis was not an empirical test of each device, and modeled results are not current retail guarantees (PLOS Water study).

Why conditions can change the result
Air contains less water vapor when it is cooler or drier, so condensation-based output can fall as temperature and humidity decline. Dew point helps describe how much moisture is available: at otherwise comparable conditions, a higher dew point generally means more water can condense. The Tempe results illustrate why a compressor unit can lead in warmer, more humid air while a desiccant system fares better under the study’s cooler, drier thresholds.
Location and season matter as much as a product’s headline rating. If you are estimating output for a particular home or site, seek performance data at conditions close to the air temperature, RH, and dew point you expect there. A peak daily yield or a figure from a different climate is not enough to calculate likely seasonal water production or energy cost.

Water collected is not automatically drinking water
Water yield and water quality are separate questions. The EPA warns that airborne contaminants can dissolve into condensate, while plumbing and stored water can support microbial growth. In its three-month evaluation of one Watergen GEN-350, opportunistic pathogens were not detected in weekly samples, but treated water had high heterotrophic bacterial counts. Those results apply to the evaluated device and study conditions; they do not establish the safety of other AWGs or ordinary dehumidifier condensate (EPA report).
The Tempe field study also found that compressor-collected water had higher measured conductivity, turbidity, and some metals near or above U.S. EPA secondary drinking-water standards, while the desiccant system’s collected water had significantly lower conductivity, metals, and turbidity. These findings concern collected water before filtration; they do not show that a particular device’s final treated water is safe or unsafe. The paper also identifies volatile organic compounds and post-treatment as relevant considerations (study abstract indexed by PubMed).
Do not treat water from an ordinary dehumidifier as potable based on the fact that it condensed from air. A drinking-water claim needs support for the complete system—including water-contact materials, storage, treatment, maintenance, and relevant water-quality testing—not just the collection mechanism.
What to check before comparing real devices
- Specific energy: Look for kWh/L or L/kWh measured at stated temperature, RH, and preferably dew point.
- Yield over time: Compare measured daily and seasonal output, not only peak or ideal-condition claims.
- Collection technology: Identify whether the unit uses compressor refrigeration or desiccant/sorption; do not assume all dehumidifiers perform alike.
- Water handling: Check the collection reservoir, water-contact materials, filtration, disinfection, maintenance schedule, and the evidence behind any drinking-water claim.
- Purpose: Decide whether you need humidity control, collected water for non-potable use, or a system designed and validated for drinking water.
The available studies do not provide a controlled, same-conditions comparison of a named household AWG with a named household dehumidifier. Compare specific devices only when their measured output and energy use were assessed under comparable conditions.
