Atlassian’s January 16, 2024 advisory warns that specified outdated Confluence Server and Data Center 8.x versions are vulnerable to unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE). If you run one of the affected versions, update the instance to the latest version available; Atlassian says there are no known workarounds. Confluence Cloud is not affected by CVE-2023-22527.
What the vulnerability allows
Atlassian describes CVE-2023-22527 as a template-injection vulnerability in out-of-date Confluence Server and Data Center. An unauthenticated attacker may be able to exploit it to run code remotely on an affected instance.
Atlassian rates the issue critical, with a CVSS 3.0 score of 10.0 and vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. This is Atlassian’s internal severity assessment; the company advises customers to assess how the issue applies to their own IT environments. The advisory does not establish how many instances were exploited or whether a particular installation has been compromised.
Is your Confluence instance affected?
First identify whether your organization uses Confluence Cloud or a self-managed Server or Data Center deployment, then check the installed version against Atlassian’s affected list.

| Deployment or version | CVE-2023-22527 status |
|---|---|
| Confluence Cloud | Not affected |
| Confluence Server or Data Center 8.0.x, 8.1.x, 8.2.x, 8.3.x, or 8.4.x | Affected |
| Confluence Server or Data Center 8.5.0–8.5.3 | Affected |
| Confluence 7.19.x LTS | Not affected by this CVE |
The unaffected status of 7.19.x applies only to CVE-2023-22527; it is not a general statement that the release is free of other security issues. Likewise, this advisory’s scope should not be read as a claim about every Confluence version or every Confluence vulnerability.
What administrators should do
- Confirm the product and installed version. Check the deployment and version in your environment, and compare them with the affected list above.
- Update affected installations. Atlassian says customers using an affected version must take immediate action and recommends updating each affected installation to the latest version available.
- Use current guidance to choose the target release. Check Atlassian’s current Confluence Security Advisory and release notes before selecting a version. The fixed releases named in the original advisory are historical, not a current upgrade recommendation.
Atlassian says there are no known workarounds. Network restrictions or other interim controls should not be treated as a substitute for the software update.

Why the original fixed-version list is not enough
When the advisory was published, its fixed-version table named Confluence Server and Data Center 8.5.4, and Data Center 8.6.0 or 8.7.1. Atlassian’s FAQ later cautioned that those listed releases were no longer the latest and did not address other vulnerabilities. Use the current security advisory and release notes to determine an appropriate present-day version rather than stopping at one of those historical releases.
