The ASUS RT-AXE7800 is a capable tri-band Wi-Fi 6E router for homes with compatible 6 GHz devices, especially if you want ASUS’s software features and a 2.5-gigabit Ethernet port. Independent review testing found strong close-range 5 GHz and 6 GHz performance, but 6 GHz coverage drops through walls; if you need consistent signal across a larger or obstacle-heavy home, a mesh system may be a better fit.

Is the ASUS RT-AXE7800 worth it?

It is worth considering if you have Wi-Fi 6E clients that can use 6 GHz, want a tri-band standalone router, and can make use of its faster wired port or built-in network controls. It is a less compelling choice if your priority is broad, consistent coverage throughout a large home or if most of your devices cannot use 6 GHz.

WIRED’s reviewer reported excellent close-range speed and latency on 5 GHz and 6 GHz, respectable results farther away, and average 2.4 GHz performance. Those are results from one reviewer’s testing, not a guarantee for every home, internet plan, or client device. RTINGS’ summary says the router performs similarly to Wi-Fi 6E routers in its price range, while a dedicated mesh system such as the eero Pro 6E offers better range performance.

Does the RT-AXE7800 support Wi-Fi 6E?

Yes. ASUS identifies the RT-AXE7800 as a Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) tri-band router, with separate 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. ASUS lists maximum band rates of 574 Mbps, 4,804 Mbps, and 2,402 Mbps, respectively. These are advertised radio-link ceilings, not expected internet speeds for one device. ASUS’s 2022 announcement describes an aggregate rate of up to 7,800 Mbps by adding the three band maxima; a single client does not receive that combined rate.

ASUS RT-AXE7800 Tri-Band WiFi 6E (802.11ax) Router, 6GHz Band, ASUS Safe Browsing, Upgraded Network Security, Instant Guard, Built-in VPN Features, Parental Controls, 2.5G Port, AiMesh Support
  • Ultra-fast WiFi 6E Technology – The whole-new 6 GHz band dramatically increases network capacity, delivering higher WiFi performance and more stable connectivity with speeds up to 7800 Mbps.
  • One-Tap Safe Browsing – Block undesirable content with Asus Safe Browsing, and protect your kids online by filtering explicit content from search results.
  • Enhanced Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with a free lifetime subscription to AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, Asus Instant Guard gives you a one-click sharable secure VPN.
  • Free Parental Controls – More flexible customizations to protect your kids online.
  • AiMesh Supported – Expand your wireless network with Asus AiMesh-compatible routers and enjoy powerful, flexible and seamless whole-home WiFi.

The 6 GHz band can provide additional capacity and access to less congested spectrum, but only when the client supports Wi-Fi 6E and local regulatory and device conditions allow it. ASUS notes that 6 GHz channel availability is subject to regulatory limitations and coexistence requirements. A Wi-Fi 6 or older client will not gain access to 6 GHz simply by connecting to this router.

How good is the ASUS RT-AXE7800’s range?

Range depends on the band, placement, building materials, interference, and client. WIRED’s reviewer found the router’s 6 GHz reach through walls and other obstacles to be a weakness. That matters because 6 GHz is most useful when the client is relatively near the router with a clear or lightly obstructed path. The reported strong close-range results should not be read as a promise of whole-home 6 GHz coverage.

If you need coverage across multiple floors or rooms separated by dense walls, compare a single-router setup with a mesh system. RTINGS’ review summary says a dedicated mesh system such as the eero Pro 6E performs better for range. The RT-AXE7800 does list AiMesh router and node modes, but a feature listing alone does not establish the coverage you will get; layout and node placement still matter.

What are the RT-AXE7800’s specifications and ports?

Item ASUS-listed specification
Wi-Fi bands 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz
Maximum advertised band rates 574 Mbps (2.4 GHz); 4,804 Mbps (5 GHz); 2,402 Mbps (6 GHz)
Radio configuration 2×2 at 2.4 GHz; 4×4 at 5 GHz; 2×2 at 6 GHz
Antennas Six external, non-detachable antennas
Processor and memory 1.7 GHz quad-core processor; 512 MB DDR4 RAM; 256 MB flash
Ethernet ports One 2.5-gigabit WAN/LAN; one gigabit WAN/LAN; three gigabit LAN
USB One USB 3.2 Gen 1 port

The 2.5-gigabit socket is a WAN/LAN port, not an additional dedicated LAN port in every configuration. There is also a gigabit WAN/LAN socket. Depending on how you assign the WAN connection, the number of ports available for wired clients can change. The router has three dedicated gigabit LAN ports; if you need more wired connections, an Ethernet switch may help, with the switch’s speed and the router port it uses determining the wired link available to those devices.

Which software features does ASUS list?

ASUS lists router/AiMesh router, AiMesh node, access point, repeater, and media bridge operating modes. Its listed software and network capabilities include AiProtection security tools, WPA3-Personal, parental controls, guest networking, VPN client and server options, QoS, traffic monitoring, and multiple WAN options. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities; they have not each been independently tested here. Their value depends on which controls you actually need and how you configure the network.

What to check before buying or setting it up

  • Confirm a use for 6 GHz. Check that your computer, phone, or other intended client supports Wi-Fi 6E and that 6 GHz operation is available under local rules.
  • Match the router to your floor plan. If the signal must pass through several walls or cover a large area, compare mesh coverage rather than assuming a single router’s 6 GHz band will reach every room.
  • Count wired ports after deciding WAN use. The 2.5-gigabit and gigabit WAN/LAN ports can serve different roles, so plan around the port assigned to your internet connection.
  • Check adapter compatibility before upgrading a PC. ASUS’s manual warns that some adapters may have connectivity issues with 802.11ax access points and recommends checking for current drivers. A Wi-Fi 6E adapter is conditional, not a required accessory.

How does it compare with another router or mesh kit?

Compare the exact dimensions that determine whether it fits your home, rather than relying on an aggregate speed label. Useful checks include close- and longer-range performance by band, 6 GHz coverage through your rooms, client compatibility, Ethernet port speeds and count after WAN assignment, mesh coverage needs, and the setup and software features you will use. The available review summaries support a distinction between the RT-AXE7800’s tested band performance and the stronger range of a dedicated mesh system; they do not establish a current price comparison.
