The ASUS ProArt Display OLED PA279CDV is a strong-value alternative to Apple’s Studio Display if you want QD-OLED contrast, 120Hz refresh, USB-C laptop charging, and a built-in KVM. Its US$699 launch MSRP undercuts the Apple option, but this is not a like-for-like replacement: ASUS is a 26.5-inch 4K screen, while Studio Display offers a sharper 27-inch 5K panel.

What the PA279CDV offers

ASUS announced the ProArt Display OLED PA279CDV in July 2026 with a US$699 MSRP. The 26.5-inch QD-OLED panel has a 3840 × 2160 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, and 166 pixels per inch. ASUS specifies 120Hz maximum refresh, 10-bit color, 99% DCI-P3 coverage, HDR10, and a 0.1ms GTG response time. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every connected device or workflow will use the maximum refresh rate or color depth. ASUS announcement · ASUS regional specifications

OLED and HDR brightness

The OLED panel’s individual pixel lighting is the main image-quality distinction: dark scenes can show deep blacks alongside bright highlights. ASUS lists 250 cd/m² typical brightness and a 1000 cd/m² HDR peak in a 3% screen area. That small-window peak should not be read as sustained or full-screen brightness.

WIRED measured 1,038 nits with a 1% HDR window, 917 nits with a 4% window, and 240 nits at full-screen SDR brightness. These are that publication’s test results, not ASUS guarantees. WIRED said the full-screen result could leave some users wanting more in a bright, window-side workspace. It also found the glossy screen surprisingly good at resisting reflections. WIRED review

Color for creative work

ASUS advertises factory calibration to Delta E<1.5, 99% DCI-P3, and true 10-bit color. WIRED independently measured 98% Display P3 and 91% Adobe RGB using its own equipment. Those figures come from different measurement claims and setups, so they should not be treated as a direct confirmation of ASUS’s calibration target. If color-critical work depends on a particular color space, verify the monitor in your own workflow and use an appropriate calibration process.

How it compares with Apple Studio Display

The PA279CDV is best understood as a different kind of alternative, not a resolution match. ASUS itself positions its PA27JCV as its pixel-for-pixel 5K Studio Display alternative and the PA279CDV for buyers who prefer OLED image quality. ASUS Mac monitor guide

Ports, laptop charging, and KVM

The PA279CDV’s practical desk advantage is its mix of connections. ASUS specifies one full-function USB-C port with 96W power delivery, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression (DSC), and daisy-chain support. Its integrated hub has three USB-A ports; ASUS also lists two DisplayPort connectors, one intended for daisy-chain output. Check the regional specification sheet and your computer’s port capabilities before planning a multi-display setup.

The integrated KVM can switch between two computers while sharing one keyboard and mouse. That can simplify a workstation used with both a desktop and a laptop. ASUS also advertises a Mac-compatible M Model-P3 setting and DisplayWidget Center for macOS; those are ASUS compatibility and color-matching claims, not independent certification.

Design, ergonomics, and sound

ASUS lists height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustment, plus a 100 × 100mm VESA mount. The built-in speakers are rated at 2 × 2W, but they are not a compelling reason to choose this monitor: WIRED described them as poor, and Australian Photography called them unremarkable. Australian Photography reviewer Tim Levy also noted that the monitor has no webcam or microphone. Australian Photography review

Price, warranty, and regional caveats

ASUS stated a US$699 MSRP and July 2026 availability in its US announcement. That is a launch MSRP, not a promise of current price or stock in every market. Australian Photography reported an Australian street price of A$1,499 in its September 29, 2026 review; that regional figure should not be compared with the US MSRP as if they were the same price basis.

Who should buy the PA279CDV?

Choose it if

  • You prefer OLED contrast and 120Hz motion over the extra pixel density of a 5K panel.
  • You need a single USB-C connection with up to 96W laptop charging, a USB hub, and support for sharing peripherals between two computers.
  • You work across Mac and non-Mac systems and value HDMI and DisplayPort alongside USB-C.
  • Your workspace does not require especially high full-screen SDR brightness.

Consider another display if

  • You want the finer text and image detail of a 27-inch 5K screen; the ASUS is 4K at 166 PPI.
  • You need a webcam, microphone, or strong built-in speakers; this model has no camera or microphone, and reviewers criticized its speakers.
  • Your work depends on a specific color-accuracy requirement that you have not verified with your own calibration and workflow.
  • You rely on high brightness across a whole screen in a bright room rather than HDR highlights in small areas.

Verdict

The PA279CDV is a convincing Studio Display rival for buyers whose priorities are OLED blacks, 120Hz refresh, versatile connectivity, and a two-computer KVM—not for someone seeking the closest match to Apple’s 5K sharpness or integrated camera-and-audio package. At its US$699 launch MSRP, it made a persuasive value case on features; check local pricing and warranty terms before treating that value as current in your region.
