The WS Professional stands out for two PCI-X slots alongside two PCI Express x16 slots; the P5WD2-E Premium instead offers two CrossFire-capable graphics slots running at x8, plus a broader mix of PCI Express and conventional PCI slots.
What is the difference between the ASUS P5WDG2-WS and P5WD2-E Premium?
The main distinction is the slots available for add-in cards. The P5WDG2-WS Professional pairs two PCI Express x16 slots with two PCI-X slots, a useful legacy-workstation feature for compatible PCI-X cards. The P5WD2-E Premium has two CrossFire-capable PCI Express graphics slots operating at x8 each, plus additional PCI Express and PCI slots. Both manuals specify Intel 975X and ICH7R chipsets and support for up to 8 GB of DDR2 memory.
| Feature | P5WDG2-WS Professional | P5WD2-E Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Chipset | Intel 975X Express northbridge and ICH7R southbridge; ASUS P5WDG2-WS Professional manual, manual | Intel 975X and ICH7R; ASUS P5WD2-E Premium manual, manual |
| Graphics and expansion | Two PCI Express x16 slots, two PCI-X slots, and two PCI slots; CrossFire support, per ASUS manual | Two CrossFire-capable PCI Express x16 slots operating at x8, one universal PCI Express slot up to x2, one PCI Express x1 slot, and three PCI slots, per ASUS manual |
| Memory capacity | Up to 8 GB across four DIMM sockets | Up to 8 GB across four DIMM sockets |
| Storage connections | Four ICH7R SATA 3 Gb/s ports, four additional SATA ports through a Marvell controller, and IDE | Four ICH7R SATA 3 Gb/s ports plus additional Marvell SATA/PATA connections |
What does PCI-X add to the WS Professional?
PCI-X is the WS Professional’s defining expansion option: it provides two slots for compatible legacy PCI-X cards, alongside its PCI Express and conventional PCI slots. That makes the board’s documented layout distinct from the Premium’s, which has no PCI-X slots. Check a card’s interface, voltage, physical fit, and operating requirements against the motherboard manual before planning a build; the presence of a PCI-X slot alone does not establish compatibility with every card.
Which processors and DDR2 memory do these 975X motherboards support?
P5WDG2-WS Professional
ASUS lists an LGA775 socket and support for Core 2 Duo, Pentium D, Pentium 4, and Celeron processor families. The manual specifies four 240-pin DIMM sockets and up to 8 GB of unbuffered ECC or non-ECC DDR2-667/533 memory, with DDR2-800 support also noted. ASUS describes the memory design as “Dual-channel memory architecture.” Consult the P5WDG2-WS Professional manual for the model’s specifications.

- Boost Your System’s Performance: Increase available memory for smoother multitasking, improved responsiveness and better performance when running memory-intensive applications.
- Matched Specifically to Your Machine: OFFTEK selects the correct memory configuration for the computer shown in this listing, removing the uncertainty from choosing a compatible upgrade.
- We Do the Technical Checking for You: There is no need to compare memory speeds, voltages, form factors or other technical details, as the upgrade has been matched to the machine’s supported requirements.
- Extend the Life of Your Computer: Increasing the available memory can help your existing machine remain productive for longer, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete system.
- Quick and Straightforward Upgrade: Memory is normally simple to install and requires no software installation; shut down and disconnect the machine before fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
P5WD2-E Premium
The Premium manual lists LGA775 support for Pentium 4/Celeron and later processor families, four DIMM sockets, and up to 8 GB of ECC or non-ECC DDR2-800/667/533 memory. It also specifies 1066/800/533 MHz front-side bus support. For a specific processor, verify the board’s BIOS and CPU support information rather than assuming that family-level support guarantees every chip will work. See the P5WD2-E Premium manual.
What storage ports does each board provide?
The P5WDG2-WS Professional manual lists four SATA 3 Gb/s ports on the ICH7R southbridge and four additional SATA ports via a Marvell controller, as well as IDE. The P5WD2-E Premium has four ICH7R SATA 3 Gb/s ports and additional Marvell SATA/PATA connections. Its manual also warns that the SATA_RAID4 connector and external SATA port cannot be used at the same time. Check the board manual when planning which connectors to use, especially if you need both of those Premium connections.

How should you interpret these specifications today?
These are historical manufacturer specifications, not evidence of present-day operating-system support, component availability, or performance. A used board’s condition and BIOS version can also affect whether a particular CPU or add-in card works. ASUS lists the P5WDG2-WS English manual E2455 dated March 7, 2006, and a later English manual, ie2703, dated August 21, 2006, on its support and manuals page. Confirm that the documentation matches the exact board revision, then check CPU and card requirements before purchasing parts or beginning a restoration.
