The ASUS ExpertWiFi EBG15 is a compact, fanless wired router for modest gigabit-network setups that need flexible WAN options but not built-in Wi-Fi or multi-gigabit ports. Its five Ethernet ports, USB functions and small footprint make it worth considering for a small shop, RV or other space where a separate access point is acceptable. It is a poor fit if you need faster-than-gigabit Ethernet or an all-in-one wireless router.
What the ASUS EBG15 is
The EBG15 is a small wired router, not a Wi-Fi router with radios built in. ASUS lists dimensions of 121 × 75 × 26 mm and a weight of 250 g. Its UK specifications list a 1.8GHz dual-core ARMv8 processor, 512 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash; those are vendor-listed hardware details, not evidence of a particular routing speed. ServeTheHome’s January 12, 2025 quick look describes it as fanless and silent in use. ASUS supplied the units covered, and the article was sponsored; that context matters when weighing its favorable assessment. The review does not provide measured throughput, latency or numerical power-draw results. ServeTheHome’s EBG15 quick look
Ports and networking features
ASUS lists one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports and one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. Two of the four LAN ports can be configured as WAN/LAN, letting the router use up to three Ethernet WAN connections according to ASUS. Its overview also advertises a USB mobile-hotspot connection for backup. All Ethernet ports are gigabit, so this is not the right class of device for multi-gigabit wired internet or LAN traffic. #1 Best Overall
- Easier-Than-Ever Setup — Convenient and easy router management via web browser or the ASUS ExpertWiFi mobile app through Bluetooth setup.
- VLAN for Added Security —Each of the Ethernet ports can be assigned to one or more VLAN IDs that provides additional security for your business.
- Up to 3 WAN Ethernet Ports – 1 gigabit WAN port and 2 gigabit WAN/LAN ports with load balancing optimize multi-line broadband usage.
- Backup WAN for Stable Connectivity –The USB port can be used as a backup WAN by connecting it to a mobile phone with hotspot to maintain a reliable internet connection.
- Commercial-Grade Network Security and VPN — Secure public WiFi connections with Safe Browsing and VPN features. Enjoy a free-subscription ASUS AiProtection Pro, including robust intrusion prevention system (IPS) features like deep packet inspection (DPI) and virtual patching to block malicious traffic.
USB storage and mobile backup
The USB port can support network access to a connected drive. ASUS lists media-server, Samba, FTP and shared-folder functions, along with 4G/5G tethering. The available information does not establish compatibility with a particular drive or filesystem, storage speed, or mobile-backup performance; check the requirements for your equipment before relying on either function. Who it suits—and who should look elsewhere
Good fit: simple, wired gigabit networks
ServeTheHome presents the EBG15 as a straightforward choice for a 1Gbps router need and mentions smaller connections around 100–300Mbps. Its examples include an RV or van, a trailer with cameras and Wi-Fi, a small shop, or a compact site using one or two access points. These are suggested use cases, not tested installations or guaranteed performance. ServeTheHome’s EBG15 quick look

Not a fit: built-in Wi-Fi, multi-gigabit or PoE requirements
- Built-in wireless: You will need a separate access point for Wi-Fi. An integrated Wi-Fi router or mesh system may be simpler if you want wireless coverage in one package.
- Multi-gigabit connections: The EBG15’s Ethernet ports are gigabit, so consider a router with faster ports if your internet service or local network requires more than 1GbE.
- PoE-powered cameras or access points: The EBG15 is not a PoE switch. ASUS’s EBP15 is a separate PoE+ switch that may suit installations needing powered Ethernet devices; it is not required to use the router. ASUS EBP15 overview
- Deep firewall customization: ServeTheHome names OPNsense and pfSense as DIY alternatives. They can be relevant when configurability matters more than a compact, managed appliance, but the quick look does not offer a controlled comparison.
Setup and administration
ServeTheHome describes phone or web setup and an interface with a dashboard and controls for DHCP, multi-WAN, port forwarding, VPN, DMZ, IPv6, firewall settings, USB and firmware updates. ASUS’s user guide explains that port forwarding redirects incoming traffic to a computer or service on the local network. ASUS guide: port forwarding
Before buying, verify that the available controls match your needs and the firmware version you will use. The cited guide section is specifically about port forwarding; it should not be taken as a complete guide to every EBG15 menu or feature.

How to decide
Compare the EBG15 with alternatives against the needs of the whole network, not the router alone:
- WAN: Count required internet connections and decide whether multi-WAN grouping, failover or aggregation is important.
- Wired speed: Confirm that gigabit Ethernet is sufficient for both internet service and local traffic.
- Wireless: Include the cost and placement of an access point, or compare with an integrated Wi-Fi router or mesh system.
- Features and management: Check that its listed VPN, VLAN and firewall options cover your requirements without assuming performance or security outcomes.
- Installation: Consider footprint, fanless operation and whether cameras or access points need a separate PoE switch.
- Alternative approach: A DIY OPNsense or pfSense system may offer a different level of control, but the sources here do not establish which option is faster, safer or better value.
