The announcement confirmed a 10th-generation Intel lineup, memory and storage options, connectivity, and a North American launch plan—but the configurations and Celeron price forecast in the earlier report were not official specifications.
What the November 2020 report knew—and what it predicted
On November 15, 2020, Chrome Unboxed’s Gabriel Brangers reported that Chromium developer board names had added another 10th-generation Chromebox based on the Puff baseboard. The listed codename was “Duffy.” At that point, ASUS had not announced the device and no early retailer listings had been found. Chrome Unboxed’s report therefore mixed a developer-list clue with forecasts about a product that was not yet public.
The article anticipated Celeron-through-Core-i5 options, raised the possibility of a Core i7, expected a release before the end of 2020, and estimated roughly $250–$275 for a Celeron configuration. Those were predictions, not confirmed specifications or prices.
What ASUS officially confirmed for Chromebox 4
ASUS announced Chromebox 4 on November 19, 2020. Its official announcement confirmed a 10th-generation Intel Core or Celeron processor family, up to 16 GB of DDR4-2666 memory, and up to 256 GB of M.2 SSD storage. ASUS also listed USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 with data, power delivery, and DisplayPort functions; Intel Wi-Fi 6; USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports; and support for as many as three 4K displays. See the ASUS USA announcement and ASUS Global product announcement.

- Intel Core i3-10110U processor with pre-installed DDR4 8GB RAM, M.2 128GB SSD storage, WiFi 6, USB Type C, MicroSD Card Reader, VESA Mount, and Chrome OS
- Dual HDMI and USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 ports support up to three 4K displays
- Intel WiFi 6 for ultrafast network speeds
- USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports enable quick data transfers, and USB-C also supports power delivery and DisplayPort connections
- New lockable VESA mount securely attaches to surfaces and offers expanded usage scenarios
These are family-level capabilities, not a promise that every configuration includes the maximum memory and storage. The cited announcements do not establish the exact processor, memory, or storage combination attached to every SKU.
Launch timing and price were historical
ASUS said North American availability would begin in December 2020, with a starting price of $289 USD. That is the company’s published launch-era plan, not a current offer or evidence of present stock.
Rank #2
- Intel Celeron 7305 Processor with pre-installed 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB M.2 PCIe G4x4 NVMe SSD, Quad-display, Wi-Fi 6E & Bluetooth, Gb Lan, USB-C, Chrome OS, and VESA Mount
- Dual HDMI, one DP, and one USB-C support up to four 4k displays
- 2.5 Gbps Ethernet and dual-band Intel WiFi 6E for strong, stable signals and superfast speeds
- Titan C security chip & Kensington lock slot for business-grade security
The $289 family starting price should not be treated as a direct correction to the earlier $250–$275 estimate. The report’s estimate referred to an expected Celeron configuration, while the cited ASUS announcement gives a starting price for the Chromebox 4 family without identifying the processor configuration at that price.
Chromebox 4 is not ASUS’s Fanless Chromebox or Chromebox 5
Two similarly named ASUS products appeared later, but neither is the Chromebox 4 reported in November 2020.

Fanless Chromebox
In January 2021, ASUS introduced a separately named Fanless Chromebox for industrial and retail settings. Heise reported an aluminum fanless chassis and 10th-generation Comet Lake-U options: Celeron 5205U, Core i3-10110U, Core i5-10210U, and Core i7-10510U. The report said the Celeron version was limited to 8 GB of RAM, while Core i configurations could reach 16 GB. It also listed eMMC or M.2 SSD storage, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-A, HDMI 2.0, and RS-232. Heise described a planned US release in February 2021 at a starting price of $399; these are historical report details, not present-day availability or pricing. Heise’s January 2021 report covers that distinct model.
Chromebox 5
ASUS announced the distinct Chromebox 5 (CN67) in 2023, listing processors up to 12th-generation Intel Core i7 and an optional integrated Qi-certified wireless charger. It is not the product referred to by the 2020 Comet Lake story. ASUS’s Chromebox 5 announcement identifies that later model.

What this means for someone evaluating one now
The available announcements establish what ASUS said about Chromebox 4 at launch; they do not establish current retailer inventory, current prices, or the device’s present ChromeOS support status. Before choosing a used or remaining-stock unit, verify the exact SKU and configuration, its condition and included power supply, the display connections you need, and the current software-support information for that specific device. The launch announcements do not give an update-support duration.
For a multi-display setup, ASUS’s stated support for up to three 4K displays is relevant, but check the actual ports and cables on the specific configuration before planning a desk. USB-C is specified for data, power delivery, and DisplayPort functions; that does not by itself establish which cables, displays, or power arrangements are included in a particular package.
