The 15.6-inch ASUS Chromebook CX5 reviewed by Chrome Unboxed in 2021 delivered unusually strong browser-benchmark results for its tested configuration: an 11th-generation Intel Core i3, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of NVMe storage. The trade-offs were a large, 4.2-pound convertible and a screen the reviewer found too dim for comfortable use in afternoon sunlight. This is a historical review, not a current performance ranking or price check.
Which ASUS Chromebook CX5 does this review cover?
Chrome Unboxed’s May 14, 2021 review describes a 15.6-inch convertible Chromebook in the CX5500-family context. ASUS lists CX5500 and CX5400 as separate CX5 model families, and the sources do not establish the exact SKU of the unit tested. Check the full model number on any listing before comparing specifications or buying: the 14-inch CX5400 is a different device, not another name for the reviewed 15.6-inch model. Chrome Unboxed’s review and ASUS’s business product guide provide the relevant context.
How fast was the CX5 in the 2021 review?
Chrome Unboxed tested its review unit with an 11th-generation Intel Core i3, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of NVMe storage. In the browser benchmarks reported in 2021, it scored 57,000 in Octane, 165 in Speedometer 2.0, and 147 in Jetstream 2.0. The reviewer characterized the machine as responsive and wrote that “the ASUS Chromebook CX5 – does not disappoint when it comes to raw performance.” That is the reviewer’s assessment of this unit, not a guarantee for every CX5 configuration.
For context, the review compared those results with a 10th-generation Core i7 Chromebook with 16 GB of RAM, which it reported at 42,000 in Octane, 123 in Speedometer 2.0, and 106 in Jetstream 2.0. Those figures are Chrome Unboxed’s results under its 2021 testing conditions. They are not a current, standardized comparison across Chromebooks, and legacy browser benchmark scores alone do not establish how well a device handles present-day workloads.

What are the screen and physical design like?
Large convertible form
The reviewed CX5 has a 15.6-inch, 16:9 touchscreen with 1920 × 1080 resolution. Chrome Unboxed reported a weight of 4.2 pounds and a thickness of 0.73 inches. Its size gives it room for a number pad and makes tent or presentation positions useful, but it is less convenient to carry than a compact Chromebook.

The reviewer praised the aluminum lid and cohesive finish, backlit keyboard, number pad, glass trackpad, and speakers. The touchscreen supports USI pen input according to the review, but a specific compatible pen for the exact reviewed SKU is not established. Confirm compatibility against the full model number before purchasing a stylus.
Brightness is the main screen drawback
Chrome Unboxed reported 250 nits of brightness and found the display serviceable indoors but difficult to see in afternoon sunlight. The reviewer otherwise liked its colors, viewing angles, touch response, and Full HD resolution. If you expect to work outdoors or beside bright windows, brightness is a significant consideration rather than a minor specification.

Ports, battery, and everyday use
The 15.6-inch review unit has a full-size HDMI port, which can simplify connecting an external display, alongside the conveniences of a convertible design. The reviewer also praised the audio. Chrome Unboxed estimated around 8–10 hours of battery use per charge based on the reviewer’s experience; this was not a controlled, independently repeated battery test, so actual runtime will depend on configuration and use.
Do not confuse the 15.6-inch CX5 with the CX5400
The CX5400 is a separate 14-inch CX5-family convertible. Its specifications are useful only if you are deliberately comparing models; they should not be assigned to the 15.6-inch review unit.

Who should consider the reviewed CX5?
- It may suit you if you want a large touchscreen Chromebook, value a number pad and full-size HDMI, and expect to use it mainly indoors for ChromeOS tasks.
- Look elsewhere or compare carefully if portability, bright-light visibility, specialist Windows software, or demanding workstation workloads are priorities. ChromeOS app availability is a separate consideration from processor speed.
- Verify the exact model before using CX5400 specifications, comparing listings, or buying accessories. The 2021 review’s $569 asking price is historical, not current pricing; current CX5500 availability and price are not established here.
