The ASUS A8N-SLI Premium is a Socket 939 motherboard for AMD Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX processors, built around NVIDIA’s nForce 4 SLI chipset. Its stand-out design feature is passive heat-pipe chipset cooling; its main practical considerations today are its DDR memory limit, BIOS-dependent CPU compatibility, and legacy storage interfaces. It can suit a period-correct restoration, but it is not a modern platform upgrade.

What are the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium specs?

ASUS’s A8N-SLI Premium manual documents the following core platform features:

Component Documented specification
Processor socket and chipset Socket 939; NVIDIA nForce 4 SLI
Memory Four 184-pin DIMM sockets; dual-channel, ECC or non-ECC unbuffered DDR at 400, 333, or 266 MHz; up to 4 GB
Graphics Two PCI Express x16 slots; in SLI mode, each operates at x8 bandwidth
Storage SATA and legacy PATA/Ultra DMA interfaces, with RAID modes documented in the manual
Expansion PCI Express and conventional PCI slots

These are manufacturer specifications for the original board. The memory rates identify compatible DDR classes, not a guarantee that every module of a given capacity or organization will work. Confirm the exact module configuration and board behavior before buying replacement memory.

What makes the Premium model distinctive?

Passive chipset cooling

The Premium’s nForce 4 chipset uses a passive heat-pipe cooling assembly rather than a small chipset fan. Tom’s Hardware connected this design to ASUS’s aim of delivering a fanless product, writing that the release delay was related to “the company’s promise to deliver a fanless product to market.” Tom’s Hardware’s period test describes the design in its original context. That history does not establish the condition of any individual used board: inspect the heat pipe, heatsinks, mounting hardware, and surrounding components before powering one up.

  • We Do the Technical Checking for You: There is no need to compare memory speeds, voltages, form factors or other technical details, as the upgrade has been matched to the machine’s supported requirements.
  • Extend the Life of Your Computer: Increasing the available memory can help your existing machine remain productive for longer, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete system.
  • Quick and Straightforward Upgrade: Memory is normally simple to install and requires no software installation; shut down and disconnect the machine before fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

SLI configuration

The board supports two compatible graphics cards in SLI, with x8 bandwidth per slot in SLI mode; ASUS describes single-card operation in the first slot. A period HotHardware review also describes SLI configuration through software or BIOS rather than requiring the user to move a selector card between slots. That is a review account of the board’s operating approach, not a promise that current graphics cards, drivers, or operating systems will work with it.

Other period features

A PCSTATS review describes the reviewed board as including IEEE 1394a, dual Gigabit networking, 7.1-channel audio, and an additional SATA/RAID controller. These details provide period-review context; consult ASUS’s manual for the core documented specifications and the exact connector layout for a specific board revision.

Which CPU does the A8N-SLI Premium support?

ASUS specifies Socket 939 support for AMD Athlon 64 FX and Athlon 64 processors, but socket fit alone is not enough to establish compatibility. ASUS’s CPU support table lists exact processor models and their minimum BIOS versions. For example, it lists Opteron 165 and 175 as validated since BIOS 1010.001, and Opteron 170, 180, and 185 since BIOS 1010.

Before selecting a processor, match its exact model to that table and determine which BIOS is installed on the board. Do not assume that every Socket 939 chip will work, or that a board with an older BIOS can boot a processor requiring a later version. If an update is needed, plan the update around a processor already supported by the installed BIOS and follow ASUS’s instructions for the board.

What RAM works with the A8N-SLI Premium?

Look for 184-pin unbuffered DDR memory in a rate supported by the manual: DDR400, DDR333, or DDR266. ASUS documents support for ECC or non-ECC modules and up to 4 GB across four DIMM sockets. The most directly matched search term for replacement or expansion memory is 184-pin DDR400 memory (also commonly described as PC3200 DDR memory).

Do not choose a module on speed and pin count alone. Check its capacity, organization or density, ECC status, and whether its configuration suits the board. The manual’s overall 4 GB ceiling does not by itself confirm that every combination of modernly sourced or unusually dense modules is supported.

What storage and expansion can it use?

The manual documents SATA storage as well as PATA/Ultra DMA connections and RAID modes. That makes a SATA drive a possible restoration option, but it does not prove compatibility with every current SSD, controller configuration, or operating system. An SSD can replace an older drive in a suitable setup; it does not remove the limits imposed by the board’s age, interface, processor, and software support.

For graphics, the two PCIe x16 slots support the board’s SLI arrangement, while the manual also lists conventional PCI and PCI Express expansion. The presence of those slots describes the motherboard’s interfaces—not the compatibility of a particular modern card or its drivers.

Is the A8N-SLI Premium useful for a Socket 939 retro build?

It can be a reasonable choice when the goal is to restore or assemble a period Socket 939 system and the board is complete and functional. Its strongest practical parts path is compatible 184-pin DDR memory. A processor upgrade is more conditional because ASUS ties individual CPU models to BIOS minima; a SATA SSD is an optional storage refresh rather than a platform modernization.

  • Check the board itself: verify the exact model, revision, socket condition, capacitor condition, connectors, and passive cooling assembly.
  • Match the processor before purchase: use ASUS’s CPU table for the exact model and minimum BIOS.
  • Verify memory configuration: confirm unbuffered 184-pin DDR type, speed, capacity, and module organization.
  • Set realistic storage expectations: the manual documents legacy SATA and PATA interfaces, not universal current-drive or OS compatibility.
  • Evaluate used parts individually: current availability, seller claims, and the condition of a particular board or component are listing-specific and cannot be inferred from the specifications.
