Astronomers have identified IRAS 18293−0941 as a strong candidate for a rare kind of stellar-scale jet system called a microblazar. Its one-sided radio jet appears to point close to Earth, but the “miniature quasar” label is an analogy—not a claim that the object is a small quasar. The proposed link between this system and a nearby source of ultra-high-energy particles remains unconfirmed.
What “miniature quasar” means
A quasar is a bright system powered by a supermassive black hole pulling in surrounding material. Some quasars launch powerful jets; when a jet is aimed approximately toward Earth, the object is called a blazar and can appear especially bright.
A microquasar is a stellar-scale binary system that accretes material and launches jets. A microblazar is a proposed microquasar whose jet points close to our line of sight. So “miniature quasar” is accessible shorthand for the resemblance in jet behavior and orientation, not a literal description of the candidate’s size or central engine. Science News explains the candidate in those terms.
Why IRAS 18293−0941 is a candidate
A 2026 paper in Astronomy & Astrophysics, titled “A Galactic microblazar as a potential accelerator of ultra-high-energy particles,” presents IRAS 18293−0941 as a serious Galactic microblazar candidate. The authors report photometric and spectroscopic properties consistent with a binary-star system, alongside clear, collimated, one-sided radio emission. They interpret the radio structure as consistent with relativistic motion and a small jet ejection angle, which would place the jet close to our viewing direction. The journal record and abstract describe the evidence and interpretation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These observations support the candidate identification; they do not make every expected blazar signature a confirmed detection. In particular, the authors say fast variability was not observed. They suggest a dense envelope of material around the system could smooth out changes that might otherwise be seen. That is a possible explanation, not an observed variability signal.
Could it be linked to ultra-high-energy particles?
The paper proposes that IRAS 18293−0941 may be connected to a nearby ultra-high-energy source. The authors say their modeled physical scenario lends credibility to a likely connection, while the paper’s title itself describes the system as a potential accelerator. The proximity and model make the idea worth investigating, but do not establish that this system produces the particles.

One hypothesis discussed in coverage is that the jet pointed away from Earth could interact with surrounding matter and accelerate particles. Science News reports that the team is pursuing further observations of both the nearby high-energy hotspot and the visible jet. Until those observations clarify the relationship, the hotspot’s origin should be treated as unresolved—not as a solved cosmic-ray mystery. Science News’ report describes the proposed connection and follow-up.

- Candidate object: IRAS 18293−0941 is the system discussed in the 2026 paper.
- Observed evidence: The paper reports binary-like photometric and spectroscopic properties and collimated, one-sided radio emission.
- Interpretation: The radio emission is consistent with relativistic motion and a jet at a reduced angle to our line of sight.
- Unobserved feature: Fast variability was not seen; a dense circumstellar envelope is offered as a possible reason.
- Open question: The relationship, if any, between the system and the nearby ultra-high-energy source requires further observations.
