It is particularly suited to time-series observations such as exoplanet transits, while also supporting variable-star and moving-object work. It can prepare and inspect measurements, but transit fitting in AIJ does not provide uncertainties for fitted transit parameters.
What AstroImageJ does
AstroImageJ combines the ImageJ image-analysis foundation with astronomy-specific display and measurement tools. The official project site describes it as an open-source application; it is distributed under the GNU General Public License. The user guide summarizes its purpose as “software designed for extracting photometry from astronomical images, as well as everything in between: from image calibration to exporting a light curve.”
Its feature set covers astronomical image and data analysis rather than image viewing alone. AIJ handles FITS images and tables, including compressed FITS and 3D cubes; displays FITS data and headers; supports WCS coordinates and plate solving through Astrometry.net; and offers image alignment. It also includes TESS image and SPOC light-curve analysis. These are documented capabilities, not independent performance benchmarks.
How an AstroImageJ photometry workflow works
For an image sequence, the typical workflow is to prepare the frames, measure sources across the sequence, then inspect and export the resulting curves. The exact steps depend on the data and observing setup.

- SV105 telescope camera is the basic method for starting astronomical imaging; you can use the SV105 electronic telescope eyepiece to image it; which is more suitable for beginners who like to do astrophotography
- SV105 astrophotography camera is suitable for lunar and planetary photography; share the view of bright planets; moon and terrestrial targets; just point the telescope at the moon or planet and record a quick video; you can transfer the real-time view of the telescope to your laptop or PC
- Plug and play; no driver required; real-time dynamic observation; clear images; SV105 astronomy camera compatible with Windows system needs to download Sharpcap Capture; Linux system needs to download AstroDMx Capture; Android system needs to download USB Camera
- The image processor adopts dark light compensation technology; SV105 svbony camera can greatly improve the image clarity of the astronomy camera under low light conditions
- Interesting and useful USB planetary camera; standard 1.25 inches; threaded M28.5x0.6; can be used with telescope filters; directly connected to the telescope
1. Calibrate the images
The Data Processor can prepare raw images using bias subtraction, dark subtraction, and flat-field division. Optional non-linearity correction and FITS-header updates are also documented. It can process a completed dataset or operate in real time as images are acquired.
2. Measure stars or moving objects
AIJ provides aperture photometry, with several aperture options, as well as time-series differential photometry across image sequences. Differential photometry compares the target’s measured brightness with comparison stars in the same images, helping observers examine relative changes over time. The software also documents photometry for moving objects.

- 4K Lunar and Planetary Imaging: The 8MP sensor supports up to 4K video and high-frame-rate 1080P capture. View and record the Moon and bright planets through your telescope on a compatible computer, for beginner astronomy and shared observing sessions.
- UVC Viewing and Optional ASCOM Support: Use compatible Windows, macOS or Linux capture software for standard UVC viewing without a dedicated FIBONAX driver. For supported Windows astronomy applications, install the optional FIBONAX ASCOM driver and the required ASCOM Platform.
- Standard 1.25 Inch Telescope Connection: Replaces an optical eyepiece in many standard 1.25 inch focusers. The M28.5x0.6 thread accepts compatible astronomy filters. Your telescope must have sufficient focuser travel to bring the image into focus; fit alone does not guarantee focus.
- Removable IR Cut Filter and Metal Body: The included detachable IR cut filter helps reduce unwanted infrared light for more natural color. The compact CNC aluminum housing weighs approximately 110g for a lightweight telescope imaging setup.
- Manual Telescope Focus Required: This camera does not autofocus. Start with the Moon, remove the telescope lens cover, then adjust the telescope focuser and software exposure settings. Designed primarily for lunar and planetary imaging, rather than long-exposure deep-sky photography.
3. Inspect, fit, and export curves
The multi-plot tool visualizes curves from measurements, and AIJ includes light-curve fitting and detrending tools. Export options include AAVSO-formatted light curves and Minor Planet Center format. The official feature list and guide describe these functions; they do not establish a particular accuracy level or guarantee that a given dataset will produce a useful result.
Who AstroImageJ is for
AIJ was created primarily for precise ground-based exoplanet transit photometry. Its documented workflow is useful when an observer needs to calibrate a sequence, perform differential measurements, inspect a transit-shaped signal, and export data for further analysis. The user guide also describes variable-star work and asteroid or other moving-object observations, and the project lists TESS analysis among its features. The guide notes use of AIJ in TESS Follow-up Observing Program Subgroup 1.

Whether it fits your work depends on the analysis you need after measuring the images. For image calibration and photometric time series, its astronomy-specific tools form an integrated workflow. For specialized statistical inference or analyses outside its documented feature set, another tool may be needed.
What to know about transit fitting
AIJ can fit and detrend light curves, but the user guide explicitly cautions that it “does not, for example, return uncertainties of the fitted transit parameters.” It presents AIJ as useful for producing precise light curves, detailed inspection, and exporting results to other tools, including tools used for joint determination of planetary and orbital parameters. A fitted curve in AIJ should therefore not be mistaken for a complete uncertainty-aware determination of a planet’s properties.
