Yes—Astral’s Python type checker ty is in beta. Astral announced the beta on December 16, 2025, and its current project documentation still labels it beta. You can try it with uvx ty check, but treat it as pre-stable software: the project warns that breaking changes, including diagnostic changes, may occur between versions.
What ty does
ty is a Python type checker and language server written in Rust, developed by Astral as an alternative to tools such as mypy, Pyright, and Pylance. Its design emphasizes incremental analysis: when code changes, the language server can recompute the affected analysis rather than rechecking everything. The project also highlights contextual diagnostics, configurable rules, support for partially typed code, and editor features including navigation, completions, code actions, and inlay hints. Its type-system documentation describes first-class intersection types and advanced narrowing. Astral’s ty repository · ty documentation
What beta means for adoption
The current repository uses 0.0.x versioning and says ty does not yet have a stable API. Breaking changes—including changes to diagnostics—may arrive between any two versions, so upgrading can affect both integrations and the type errors or warnings a team sees. If stability is important, evaluate the release against your own codebase and dependencies, then pin the tool version and manage updates through your normal change-control process.
In the beta announcement, Astral CEO and co-founder Charlie Marsh wrote: “We now use ty exclusively in our own projects and are ready to recommend it to motivated users for production use.” That is Astral’s own beta-era recommendation, not an independent assessment or a guarantee that ty is suitable for every team. A January 2026 repository issue also recorded confusion because the announcement said beta while the then-current README did not; the current repository now explicitly identifies ty as beta. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to try ty on a Python project
For a quick check, the repository suggests running uvx ty check. The basic documented command is ty check; it checks Python files recursively by default. You can also pass paths and configure which files are included or excluded. ty command-line documentation
- Run a quick check: From a terminal, use
uvx ty checkto try the checker without first adding it as a project dependency. - Make sure the project environment is available: For dependency-aware results, ty looks for packages in the active virtual environment or a
.venvin the project or working directory. Activate the environment or useuv runwhen needed. - Choose the Python target: Set the target version to match the project’s supported Python floor. Use
--pythonto identify an interpreter explicitly when needed; the interpreter used to install ty is distinct from the Python version the code targets. - Check behavior during edits: Use watch mode to recheck affected files as they change, or connect ty to a supported editor workflow through its language-server features.
Python version compatibility
Current official guidance says ty officially supports checking code targeting Python 3.10 and later. Python 3.7–3.9 can be selected, but the bundled standard-library stubs for those older targets are incomplete and may produce false positives or false negatives for standard-library APIs. Check the target version and the project’s actual dependency stack before relying on the diagnostics. ty documentation

How to compare ty with other checkers
A useful evaluation should consider more than a single speed figure. Compare the tools on your own project and editor workflow, including:
- Command-line time: Compare cold or uncached checks on the same codebase and machine.
- Incremental responsiveness: Measure how quickly editor diagnostics update after representative edits.
- Typing behavior: Check how each tool handles your annotations, partially typed code, diagnostics, and narrowing needs.
- Compatibility: Verify behavior with your target Python version and dependencies.
- Editor fit: Confirm that the navigation, completions, code actions, and other language-server features work in your chosen editor.
- Change tolerance: Decide whether the beta’s potential breaking changes fit your release and maintenance process.
Astral’s beta announcement reports that, without caching, ty was consistently 10x–60x faster than mypy and Pyright in the stated comparisons. It also reports an incremental check of 4.7 ms after a particular edit to a load-bearing PyTorch file, compared with 386 ms for Pyright and 2.38 seconds for Pyrefly. The command-line comparison is labeled M4. These are Astral’s measurements from 2025, not an independent benchmark; performance varies with project, machine, configuration, and workflow. The available primary-source evidence does not establish an overall winner. Astral’s beta announcement and performance comparisons
