But a rejected key is only one possible failure: an RTMPS URL, SSL, timeout, or “Waiting for data” problem needs a different check. First identify which component is reporting the error and whether Cesbo Astra is the publisher or only an upstream stream server.
Identify where the error occurs
“Astra” can refer to different products and setups. The available Cesbo Astra documentation describes stream monitoring and logs, but does not provide a YouTube stream-key-specific error code or publishing recipe. Don’t assume every Astra installation has the same controls or that Astra itself is the component sending the key.
- Astra interface or logs: Check whether Astra’s own configured stream is running and whether its logs show an error or warning.
- A separate encoder: If another encoder publishes the feed to YouTube, check its key and destination settings there.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Distinguish a rejected key or encoder-start error from an SSL certificate error, a connection timeout, or “Waiting for data.” These symptoms do not have the same cause.
For Cesbo Astra, its Streams API documentation describes stream status and restart capabilities, while Astra’s logs documentation explains its log categories. These help diagnose Astra’s stream processing; they do not verify or refresh YouTube credentials.
Fix a rejected key or encoder-start error
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select Stream.
- Copy the current stream key shown for the stream.
- Open the key field in the encoder that connects to YouTube and replace the existing value with the current key. Save the setting, then try starting the encoder again.
YouTube’s guidance for an “error when starting your encoder” recommends getting the current key from Live Control Room and updating the third-party encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not share it in screenshots, logs, or public support posts. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

If the encoder uses account login instead of a key field
Some integrations connect to YouTube through account authorization rather than a manually entered stream key. If there is no key field, replacing a key is not the applicable fix. YouTube directs users of these integrations to contact the encoder software’s support team.
Check the RTMPS destination separately
A valid key cannot compensate for a wrong destination URL or incompatible connection protocol. Compare the encoder’s destination with the server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, use the RTMPS address; do not assume an ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. Google’s documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and specifies the `rtmps` protocol and port 443 for YouTube’s secure ingest connection. - “Invalid SSL certificate”: Verify the full RTMPS server URL against Live Control Room. If the URL is otherwise correct, YouTube advises trying port 443.
- “Connection timed out”: Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and that the destination URL is correct.
These transport errors are not proof that the key is invalid. Correct the URL, protocol, or port as indicated by the actual error before changing unrelated settings.
Use Astra status and logs to isolate the failing component
- Check Astra’s documented stream status or monitoring information to see whether the configured stream is running.
- Inspect Astra logs for errors or warnings around the time of the failed start.
- If Astra reports its stream as not running, investigate the Astra-side stream configuration or processing first.
- If Astra is running but YouTube reports a rejected key, focus on the publishing encoder’s YouTube credentials and destination settings.
This separation is a practical diagnostic inference: Astra status describes Astra’s stream processing, while the encoder’s YouTube connection uses its own credentials and destination. The Cesbo documentation does not establish a special Astra error code for YouTube key rejection.

If YouTube accepts the key but waits for data
When the key is accepted but Live Control Room remains at “Waiting for data” or “Starting soon,” stop repeatedly replacing the key. Check whether the encoder is actually sending to the matching ingest URL and whether the stream is connected to the intended YouTube broadcast. Stream health and the encoder’s sending state are the next checks, not Astra hardware replacement.
