The ASRock Rack GENOAD8UD-2T/X550 is a compact single-socket SP5 motherboard with four PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, dual 10GbE and dense storage connectivity. Its 10.4 × 10.5-inch footprint can suit a space-constrained EPYC server, but it is not a full-channel EPYC platform in miniature: it has eight memory channels, and chassis fit, cooling, cabling and power need deliberate planning.

What the GENOAD8UD-2T/X550 offers

ASRock Rack specifies a 10.4 × 10.5-inch board for one AMD EPYC 9004 or 9005 processor, including specified 3D V-Cache variants, as well as 97×4-series CPUs. It uses the SP5 (LGA 6096) socket and supports a CPU TDP of up to 400W. ASRock says an EPYC 9005 processor requires a BIOS update. See the official product specifications and support resources for current compatibility details.

The headline appeal is the combination of a compact board and high-speed I/O. ASRock lists four PCIe 5.0/CXL 2.0 x16 slots, two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 sockets, five MCIO connectors with mixed PCIe and SATA modes, and support for up to 16 SATA 6Gb/s devices. Networking includes two Intel X550-AT2 10GbE RJ45 ports and a dedicated IPMI management port. The board also has an AST2600 BMC, VGA and two rear USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, according to the ASRock Rack manual library.

Eight memory channels are the key performance trade-off

The board has eight DDR5 RDIMM or RDIMM-3DS slots, arranged for eight memory channels. That is a material distinction from 12-channel EPYC boards: a system can have substantial memory capacity and fast DIMMs yet still offer fewer memory channels than a full-channel platform. For memory-bandwidth-sensitive workloads, compare channel count and the workload’s bandwidth needs before choosing the smaller board.

In its March 30, 2023 review, ServeTheHome’s Patrick Kennedy noted that bandwidth-bound tasks such as STREAM Triad would show a larger difference, while some applications were less sensitive once they had adequate bandwidth. The review does not establish one numerical performance penalty applicable to all workloads. Treat the implications as workload-dependent, not as a universal estimate. Read the ServeTheHome review for its observations.

Plan the chassis and connector layout before buying

At 10.4 × 10.5 inches, the board’s dimensions are not a guarantee of fit in a chassis sold for a familiar motherboard form factor. Confirm the mounting pattern, usable tray area, slot alignment and clearance around board edges against the exact chassis. ServeTheHome reported that one chassis it tried did not fit; that is a warning to verify a particular combination, not proof that all chassis are incompatible.

Edge clearance matters especially for MCIO cabling. The board’s dense storage options may need cables to bend and route near the chassis boundary, so check connector orientation and cable clearance as well as the board outline. The review also notes that the board lacks conventional 7-pin SATA connectors. If you plan to attach SATA drives, map the intended MCIO mode and cabling or HBA arrangement before ordering components.

Cooling and power need to match the complete build

ASRock’s manual lists a maximum CPU TDP of 400W and six fan headers. Cooling adequacy depends on the processor, cooler, chassis space and airflow together. In its 2023 test setup with an EPYC 9654, ServeTheHome found its initial Dynatron J10 setup did not cool adequately and changed to a Dynatron L32 liquid cooler. That is evidence about the reviewer’s setup, not a universal cooler requirement or assurance that the L32 fits other chassis.

  • Support AMD Ryzen 7000 series Processors
  • 4 DIMM slots (2DPC), supports DDR5 ECC/non-ECC UDIMM
  • 1 PCIe5.0 x16, 1 PCIe5.0 x4, 1 PCIe4.0 x1
  • Supports 1 M.2 (PCIe5.0 x4)

The manual lists three 8-pin ATX 12V connectors, a 4-pin ATX PSU signal connector used with a 24-pin adapter cable, a 6-pin HDD power connection, and optional 12V DC-in. The presence of three 8-pin inputs does not by itself establish that every configuration must populate all three. Check the manual and system requirements for the chosen CPU, peripherals and power supply; plan cable availability and airflow around the installed components.

Out-of-band management and firmware

The AST2600 BMC and dedicated management Ethernet port provide a separate path for server administration. ServeTheHome reported Redfish API access and HTML5 iKVM in the interface it examined in 2023. Firmware can change, so confirm those functions in the current firmware documentation before relying on a particular management workflow. As with any remotely accessible management controller, restrict network access and apply an appropriate security configuration.

Who should consider this board?

This model is a plausible fit when a project needs SP5 compute, four PCIe 5.0/CXL x16 expansion slots, dual 10GbE and extensive storage connectivity in a compact footprint, and the workload can make good use of eight memory channels. It is less attractive when the priority is 12-channel memory bandwidth, a straightforward chassis fit, ordinary SATA cabling, or a build with little room to resolve cooler and power-cabling constraints.

Before purchase, verify the exact CPU against ASRock’s current support list, confirm the BIOS level for EPYC 9005, validate the DIMMs against the memory QVL, and check operating-system support. ASRock’s manual directs users to the website for current specifications and OS support; do not assume compatibility solely from the socket or CPU family name.
