When a ChatGPT answer sounds too certain, ask: “What are you unsure about?” The question can prompt it to name ambiguity, missing context, or parts of its response that need checking. I’ve found it a useful follow-up, but it is a prompt—not a fact-check, and it cannot guarantee that the answer is right.

What the question can—and can’t—do

The prompt invites ChatGPT to make uncertainty more explicit. That may help you spot where the response depends on an assumption, lacks a key detail, or needs corroboration. You can then narrow your question, supply context, or check a claim against a suitable source.

OpenAI’s prompting guidance says GPT-5.2 remains prompt-sensitive and steerable, and recommends addressing ambiguity explicitly. That is guidance for that model, not evidence that every ChatGPT model will respond identically. OpenAI’s article on why language models hallucinate also explains why uncertainty matters: scoring only for accuracy can reward guessing instead of acknowledging when an answer is not known.

The exact wording “What are you unsure about?” has not been shown in the cited material to reliably improve responses. Treat it as a practical way to invite an uncertainty discussion, not a proven universal technique.

How to use it when an answer feels shaky

  1. Ask your original question and read the answer for unsupported certainty, vague wording, or details that depend on your situation.

  2. Follow up with: “What are you unsure about?”

  3. Use the reply to decide what to do next: provide missing context, ask it to state its assumptions, request a narrower answer, or verify an important claim with a reliable source.

For example, if ChatGPT gives a broad recommendation without knowing your location or constraints, the follow-up may reveal that those details could change the answer. You can then supply them and ask again. Whether it identifies a meaningful uncertainty depends on the question and context.

Try a more specific follow-up when needed

OpenAI’s guidance supports several ways to handle ambiguity and uncertainty; it does not establish that one phrasing is more effective than another. Choose the follow-up that fits the gap you noticed:

The OpenAI Model Spec says that when an assistant lacks sufficient confidence, it should use a tool to gather more information, hedge appropriately, or explain that it cannot answer confidently. Asking about uncertainty can encourage that kind of response, but it does not ensure ChatGPT will provide one.

Why the answer still needs checking

A model can sound confident and be wrong; it can also produce a plausible explanation of its uncertainty without establishing whether a claim is true. In OpenAI’s reported SimpleQA comparison, gpt-5-thinking-mini had a 52% abstention rate, 22% accuracy rate, and 26% error rate; o4-mini had a 1% abstention rate, 24% accuracy rate, and 75% error rate. These are results for those named models in OpenAI’s evaluation—not general ChatGPT rates and not a test of this prompt.

For consequential facts, verify the answer independently using sources suited to the decision, such as official documentation, primary records, or qualified professional advice. The follow-up is most useful as a signpost to what may need checking, not as the check itself.
